Chiranjeevi was ‘humiliated' when stars like Sivaji Ganesan were ignored at National Awards while Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar were celebrated: ‘It was like an insult'
At the pre-release event for his film Acharya in 2022, Chiranjeevi recalled that he was invited for a high tea ceremony by the government in 1989 before the National Awards ceremony. He recalled looking at a wall that celebrated the icons of cinema like Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan but omitted legends like Sivaji Ganesan and Raj Kumar. 'I kept walking in expectation to see something on south films. However, there was only a still of MGR with Jayalalithaa and a photo of Prem Nazir. They titled it as South Films. Just that. They did not recognise stalwarts like Raj Kumar or Vishnuvardhan or NT Ramarao or Nageshwara Rao or Sivaji Ganesan or even the legendary filmmakers of our industries. I felt very humiliated at that moment. It was like an insult. They portrayed Hindi cinema as Indian cinema. While other films were categorised as 'regional films' and were not given respect,' he recalled. Chiranjeevi said that he spoke about it back then as well but did not get a satisfactory response.
Chiranjeevi brought this up again Aha's special Fireside Chat with Rajeev Masand in 2024 where he shared that photos of stars like Dilip Kumar were hung on those walls but many stars from the south were ignored. 'From the South, there were photos of legendary Kannada superstar Rajkumar, and Tamil legend MGR. I felt bad that photos of our very own NT Rama Rao garu and Akkineni Nageswara Rao garu, and even Sivaji Ganesan sir weren't there,' he said. Chiranjeevi felt that the idea of Hindi cinema representing the entirety of Indian cinema was unfair but he was proud that after SS Rajamouli's Baahubali, things had started to change as films from other industries were not restricted by regional boundaries anymore.

In the last few years, the conversation around Hindi vs South cinema has gained momentum. In 2024, Pushpa 2 made more money in Hindi than its Telugu version. It was also the biggest Hindi grosser of the year, leaving behind films like Stree 2 and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.

Sooraj Barjatya agrees to Rupali Ganguly's National Award demand for TV artistes: ‘Actors still get breathers in films'
Recently, television actor Rupali Ganguly called for National Awards to recognise television actors too, arguing that they work just as hard as film actors. Now, in an interview with Telly Talk India, filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya has responded to her demand and expressed his agreement, adding that the National Awards should also consider television actors. Sooraj Barjatya reacts to Rupali Ganguly's 'TV actors should be considered for National Awards' remark. Sooraj Barjatya says TV actors should be considered for National Awards. Reacting to Rupali Ganguly's demand, Sooraj said he agreed with her and added, 'I believe they should. TV is an art form, and it demands immense hard work. If you visit a TV set, you'll see – it's a minimum of 12–14 hours of continuous work. In films, actors still get breathers, but in TV, actors must continuously live their roles, and directors must constantly shoot under restrictions, yet create something touching. If I were asked to direct one episode, I'd take a week! So yes, National Awards should include television actors.' What Rupali Ganguly said While speaking to paparazzo Viral Bhayani, Rupali said, 'There are National Awards for everyone from film stars to content creators. But there's nothing for TV artistes. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, others had the advantage of delaying their shooting schedules, but we kept working. When a film star works continuously, it makes headlines. But no one talked about how we, the TV artists, worked non-stop from 6 am to 6 pm during the pandemic. I request the government to consider us also. We work very hard; it would be nice to have some validation.' Meanwhile, Sooraj Barjatya's Rajshri Productions has returned to television after five years with the show Manpasand Ki Shaadi. The story revolves around Aarohi Shinde (Esha Suryawanshi), who challenges her family's traditional approach to marriage and expresses her desire to choose her own life partner. The show explores the clash between tradition and modernity, along with the complexities of family and societal pressures. Actor Akshun Mahajan plays the male lead. Rupali, on the other hand, continues to shine in and as Anupamaa. Produced by Rajan Shahi, the show premiered in 2020 and quickly became one of the most-watched serials on Indian television. Anupamaa continues to be a fan favourite, consistently topping the TRP charts.

Dhanashree Verma remembers 'howling' during divorce verdict with Yuzvendra Chahal, reacts to his 'Be Your Own Sugar Daddy' tee
Dhanashree Verma and Yuzvendra Chahal's separation grabbed eyeballs. During the divorce hearing, the Indian cricketer made jaws drop with his T-shirt that read, 'Be Your Own Sugar Daddy'. He recently admitted that he sported this T-shirt to give a last message to his ex, Dhanashree. Now, she has reacted to this T-shirt stunt of the Indian cricketer. Dhanashree also remembered breaking down in tears during the hearing of their split in the court. Dhanashree Verma opens up on her divorce In a conversation with Humans of Bombay, Dhanashree Verma shared that divorce is not meant to be celebrated and mentioned how separation is emotional. She said, "I feel you have to be very mature about this. I have chosen that path. I chose maturity over being immature and passing immature statements that can actually appeal public. But I would not choose that path because I don't want to disrupt my family values or his family values. We have to keep respect intact." Dhanashree expressed that grief should be acknowledged and understood, and when a split happens, it doesn't give the person the power to disrespect. Remembering the day of divorce, Dhanashree recalled, "I still remember when I was standing there and the verdict was about to be given, even though we were so well prepared mentally, but when it was happening, I got so emotional. I literally started howling in front of everybody." She continued, "I cannot even express what I was feeling at that point. I just remember that I just kept crying, I was just howling and crying. Of course! All of that happened, and he (Yuzvendra Chahal) walked out first." Dhanashree Verma reacts to Yuzvendra Chahal's T-shirt stunt Dhanashree revealed being unaware of the T-shirt controversy that happened. She recalled exiting from the back gate to avoid the camera as she was not liking the camera at that point. She mentioned that when she sat in the car after the emotional decision, she was shaking. The Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa fame said, "You know people are going to blame you only. Before I even had known that this T-shirt stunt had happened, we all were aware that people are going to blame me for this." Dhanashree said that when she opened her phone in the car while on her way out of the court, she learned about the T-shirt controversy. She expressed that she was in shock after seeing Yuzvendra's T-shirt, and then she took a call to move ahead without looking back. She again mentioned that everyone in the court saw her howling. The actress continued, "All that time you spend just flashes, it comes. As a woman humko sikhaya jaata hai ki nibhaao, bhandh ke chalo, karo. (As a woman, we are taught to keep everything settled and manage). Because we know our societies very well, our mothers know our societies very well. You are going to be labelled." Verma elaborated on how she supported the Indian cricketer during their marriage. She said "You have put in efforts. I know how much I have stood up for my partner, and everybody has seen that. Like for smallest or big things, I have been there. Maybe because of that, my emotions came out." However, she shared that after seeing Yuzvendra's T-shirt stunt, she decided not to cry over this. She said, "How you behave on that particular day is actually the reflection of you as a person." Dhanashree mentioned that there should be respect even during the divorce. As Yuzvendra earlier mentioned, he wanted to give a last message to Dhanashree, and so he sported that T-shirt. Dhanashree then reacted to this, saying, "Are bhai, WhatsApp kar deta. T-shirt kyu pehna hai? (You should have sent it on WhatsApp. Why to wear the T-shirt?)." Dhanashree Verma and Yuzvendra Chahal got married in 2020 and officially parted ways in 2025.
