Atlético Madrid eye Lyon's Thiago Almada amid Botafogo return snub
Olympique Lyonnais are expecting a busy summer of departures, particularly owing to the uncertainty around the club's future in front of French football's financial watchdog, the DNCG. With the threat of relegation to Ligue 2 looming in the worst case scenario, it is also likely that the club will be also hit with a transfer ban.
It puts the future of some of OL's key talents up in the air. This rings true for Argentinian playmaker Thiago Almada (24). The World Cup winner joined OL on a free loan from Botafogo in January, but it now looks unlikely that he will remain in France beyond the summer.
According to L'Équipe, John Textor had planned for Almada to return briefly to Botafogo in order to feature in the FIFA Club World Cup, with the Brazilian side set to take part in the 2025 edition. But the player is reportedly strongly opposed to the idea. Almada wants to stay in Europe, where he has begun to regain rhythm and visibility after his MLS departure.
With Lyon currently under a transfer ban, the club are unable to negotiate a permanent deal – not that there was any purchase option included in the initial agreement with Botafogo. And that could leave the door wide open for Atlético Madrid, who remain long-time admirers of the player and are exploring creative midfield options for the post-Koke era.

Argentina vs. Chile in World Cup qualifier: How to watch Lionel Messi play Thursday Show Caption Hide Caption lionel-messi-fifa-club-world-cup-michelob-ultra-TV-commercial Soccer superstar Lionel Messi appears in a new Michelob Ultra TV commercia for the FIFA Club World Cup. Lionel Messi is healthy and available to play with Argentina for the first time this year in a World Cup qualifying match on Thursday night. Messi and the World Cup champions will be on the road playing against Chile at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile. It's unclear whether Messi will start or come off the bench, Argentine national team coach Lionel Scaloni said Wednesday. Argentina has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, and could use this match to play several young players on its roster. Several players are also suspended or won't play to rest after long seasons. Knowing it's one of the few times Messi will wear his Argentina jersey this year, expect to see him in action representing his beloved home country. Chile will host Argentina on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET (10 p.m. in Argentina). The match will be broadcast by TYC Sports Internacional USA on DirecTV, YouTube TV, Sling TV and Fubo. Fanatiz also has a pay-per-view live stream available. Here's a link to watch the match on Fubo. Messi's status as a starter or substitute will be confirmed when Argentina announces its starting lineup for the match. What did Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni say about Messi? "We haven't decided yet whether he'll start the game or not. I need to talk to him, especially because it would be good to know how he's feeling physically. We've talked about a lot of things, but not about this specifically," Scaloni said about Messi Wednesday. "We're in a position where we can try other things, and in principle, he's available to play. We'll see. He had a good game last Saturday, so this guy is ready to play. We'll decide how he is." How fit is Lionel Messi before Argentina match in Chile? Messi, 37, is coming off one of his best stretches in 2025, scoring five goals in his last three matches with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. He was named MLS Player of the Month after seven goals and four assists in seven matches in May. He scored two goals with three assists in Inter Miami's 5-1 win against Columbus Crew last Saturday. When was the last time Messi played with Argentina? How to watch Norway vs Italy live: Stream link, TV channel, team news, prediction
Italy will kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign on Friday (2:45 pm ET), trying to qualify for their first World Cup in 12 years, with a trip up north — way north — to take on Norway in Oslo. MORE — 2026 World Cup qualifying hub | Premier League prize money list Norway are already top of Group I with six points after two games, while Italy are yet to play a qualifier due to reaching the quarterfinals of the UEFA Nations League back in March when they bowed out to Germany, 5-4 over two legs. After failing to get out of the group stage in back-to-back World Cups (2010 and 2014, after champions in 2006), the Azzurri have regressed even further by failing to even reach the final tournament in 2018 and 2022. They did, of course, use those qualifying failures to bookend the European Championship trophy at EURO 2020, but Luciano Spalletti's mandate is clear: return Italy to the world's biggest stage. 2026 is an equally unmissable target for Norway as it is Italy, with Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard trying to lead their country to its first World Cup appearance since 1998 and just their fourth all time. Norway won promotion to the top tier of the Nations League back in November, so the Røde, Hvite, Blå (Red, White and Blue) are clearly gaining ground on the rest of the continent and should be expected, at minimum, to finish top-two in the group and reach the playoff round. A massive, almost must-win for Italy in game no. 1, and an incredible opportunity for Norway to continue their dominant start (+7 goal difference) and take charge with a win. How to watch Norway vs Italy live, stream link and start time Kick off time: 2:45 pm ET Friday (June 6) Venue: Ullevaal Stadion — Oslo, Norway How to watch, TV channel: Fox Sports Norway team news, focus OUT: Erik Botheim (broken leg), Stian Gregeren (hip) Italy team news, focus OUT: Manuel Locatelli (ankle), Matteo Gabbia (calf) Norway vs Italy prediction Norway's size and physicality will give Italy lots of problems, especially early on so don't be surprised to see the hosts ahead at halftime before the visitors make a second-half comeback. Norway 2-2 Italy.
