TVET: Essential catalyst for Johor's sustainable development, says Aznan
PASIR GUDANG: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) must be recognised as a critical driver for Johor's sustainable development and not merely an alternative education pathway, says Aznan Tamin.
'In today's fast-changing world, with advances in automation and increasing complexity in global economic demands, TVET is no longer an option but is a necessity.
It is not just training, but an empowerment process that develops tech-savvy and independent individuals who can compete globally,' he added.
Aznan, also the Tanjung Surat assemblyman, said this in his speech during the TVET Idea Festival 2025 held at Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS) here on Thursday (May 8).
He also said that TVET graduates were now establishing businesses, from repair workshops and cafes to creative studios, and are even serving as educators and trainers for future generations.
He said the state was in a rapid growth phase, particularly with establishing the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), where developing a skilled local workforce is essential to sustaining this progress.
Aznan added that the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC), a collaborative initiative between the federal and state governments, was launched in November 2024 to address this need.
'The council aims to create 20,000 new job opportunities annually, offering premium starting salaries of RM4,000 for degree holders and RM3,000 for diploma graduates.
'The council is a comprehensive collaboration involving 11 government departments, 21 agencies, seven higher education institutions, 125 TVET centres, and government-linked companies,' he said.
He also urges all stakeholders, such as educators, administrators, industry players, parents, and students themselves, to support the council's vision.

JOHOR BAHRU: Johor Corporation (JCorp) sees Johor's healthcare strength as the foundation of a future regional innovation hub, serving ASEAN's rising demand for clinical excellence and skilled medical talent. 'Furthermore, our collaboration with the Mayo Clinic Care Network and the development of centres of excellence in oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics, and robotic surgery will augment JCorp's strategy in positioning not only Johor but also Malaysia as an international healthcare hub,' he said. Meanwhile, Syed Mohamed said JCorp could also collaborate with investment fund such as Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (Diperbadankan), Khazanah Nasional Bhd or Singapore's Temasek Holdings Ltd to co-fund strategic infrastructure projects. 'We are actively developing investment pathways that align with the priorities of long-term institutional capital. 'Strategic infrastructure succeeds when it is built on shared governance, long-term risk clarity and measurable outcomes,' he said. He said JCorp is shaping co-investment platforms that enable capital to scale across catalytic zones such as Ibrahim Technopolis (IBTEC) and logistics corridors linked to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). DPM Zahid to undertake four-day working visit to UK
LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be on a four-day working visit to the United Kingdom (UK) beginning today until Wednesday. Malaysian High Commissioner to the UK and Northern Ireland Datuk Zakri Jaafar said the trip follows recent visits by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in January and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof in April. "This visit will further strengthen bilateral ties between Malaysia and the UK across various sectors. "As Chair of Asean 2025, Malaysia will also use the opportunity to share achievements and encouraging outcomes under its leadership," he told a press conference here Saturday. Zahid and his delegation are expected to arrive at Heathrow International Airport at about 8.15pm local time (3.15am Monday Malaysian time), accompanied by senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, the Rural and Regional Development Ministry and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry. Zakri said that during the visit, Zahid, who is also rural and regional development minister, is scheduled to meet UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Steve Reed in Whitehall on June 2. The meeting will cover bilateral relations as well as disaster risk management, in line with Zahid's role as chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee. "In addition to official engagements with the host country, the deputy prime minister will deliver a keynote address at the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Forum titled ' Malaysia's TVET Leadership in Asean: Building Skills for a Shared Future ' at University College London. "The forum is expected to be attended by representatives of Asean missions in the UK, students, senior university officials, academics and researchers," he added. On June 3, Zahid is scheduled to attend a roundtable meeting with the franchise industry and tourism sector agencies, followed by the launch of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 for the UK market. The programme aims to promote Malaysia as a top tourism destination in Asia, targeting the UK and broader European markets.
