DPM Zahid to undertake four-day working visit to UK
LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be on a four-day working visit to the United Kingdom (UK) beginning today until Wednesday.
Malaysian High Commissioner to the UK and Northern Ireland Datuk Zakri Jaafar said the trip follows recent visits by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in January and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof in April.
"This visit will further strengthen bilateral ties between Malaysia and the UK across various sectors.
"As Chair of Asean 2025, Malaysia will also use the opportunity to share achievements and encouraging outcomes under its leadership," he told a press conference here Saturday.
Zahid and his delegation are expected to arrive at Heathrow International Airport at about 8.15pm local time (3.15am Monday Malaysian time), accompanied by senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, the Rural and Regional Development Ministry and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry.
Zakri said that during the visit, Zahid, who is also rural and regional development minister, is scheduled to meet UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Steve Reed in Whitehall on June 2.
The meeting will cover bilateral relations as well as disaster risk management, in line with Zahid's role as chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee.
"In addition to official engagements with the host country, the deputy prime minister will deliver a keynote address at the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Forum titled ' Malaysia's TVET Leadership in Asean: Building Skills for a Shared Future ' at University College London.
"The forum is expected to be attended by representatives of Asean missions in the UK, students, senior university officials, academics and researchers," he added.
Zakri said Zahid will also host a gathering with Malaysian students in the UK on the same day.
On June 3, Zahid is scheduled to attend a roundtable meeting with the franchise industry and tourism sector agencies, followed by the launch of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 for the UK market.
The programme aims to promote Malaysia as a top tourism destination in Asia, targeting the UK and broader European markets.
"To enhance the campaign's outreach, the deputy prime minister also give interviews to two travel media outlets - TTG Media and Wanderlust," Zakri said.

ICJ bid to end border row
The nation will file a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over border disputes with Thailand, Prime Minister Hun Manet said, after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a recent frontier clash. He added that the dispute was being 'incited by small extremist groups in both countries', which could lead to further clashes. Cambodia's military had said they were attacked first in Wednesday's incident, while the Thai side said their soldiers were responding to gunshots. The Thai and Cambodian militaries met the following day, agreeing to ease tensions. Thailand says a Joint Boundary Committee will meet in the next two weeks to resolve the issue. Another is Ta Moan Thom Temple, the backdrop for a video posted on social media earlier this year showing a woman singing a patriotic Khmer song which led to Bangkok lodging a formal protest to Phnom Penh. Cambodia and Thailand have long been at odds over their more than 800km-long border, which was largely drawn during the French occupation of Indochina. The 2008 military clashes erupted over a patch of land next to Preah Vihear Temple, a 900-year-old structure near their shared border. LONDON: Malaysia is looking to strengthen its bilateral cooperation with the United Kingdom in several strategic sectors, following a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and United Kingdom Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed. In discussing closer bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and the UK, Ahmad Zahid said he expressed the Malaysia's commitment to becoming the Asean Hub for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Certification and Excellence. "The focus will be on high-value industries such as semiconductors, electric vehicles (EV), aerospace, and green energy. "I also conveyed Malaysia's intention to expand collaboration with UK academic institutions and industries to enhance TVET training, certification, and the employability of Malaysian graduates," he told reporters during his working visit to Britain on Monday (June 2). On rural development, Ahmad Zahid said the country is keen to learn from the UK's approach in transforming rural areas into sustainable economic growth zones. "We also discussed matters related to disaster management, access to clean water, and the use of new technologies to strengthen resilience against global climate change," he said. Several issues concerning the environment were also discussed especially on ways to overcome the problem of polluted rivers. "Malaysia needs to learn how the UK dealt with rehabilitating polluted rivers. "We need to take heed of how polluted rivers have become a thing of the past in the UK as we are still facing the same problem. "The first step to learning from them is to raise public awareness of the problem with polluted rivers," he said. The meeting also touched on renewable energy cooperation, including the proposal to reactivate the Asean Power Grid and explore investment opportunities in solar and green energy, he said. "The UK's establishment of GB Energy, a national clean energy company, was noted as a positive signal of its strong commitment to the green agenda. "I expressed Malaysia's readiness to be a strategic partner in this development," he said In addition, Ahmad Zahid said he also highlighted the potential of Islamic financial instruments such as sukuk to support climate finance and sustainable development cooperation.
