600,000 at risk? Kelantan to probe groundwater safety over metal contamination fears

KOTA BARU, July 3 — The Kelantan government is taking seriously the issue of high iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) levels in the state's groundwater, said Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohamed Fadzli Hassan.
He said the government is ready to work with the Kelantan Health Department (JKNK) to examine the levels of these substances, which may be harmful to people's health.
'We are taking this matter seriously and will assess the levels to determine whether they pose a health hazard. If they do, immediate action will be taken with the assistance of JKNK.
'Syarikat Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) has tried its best to improve water quality and has taken various steps to upgrade its services, while much progress has been achieved, several issues are still being addressed,' he told reporters here yesterday.
He was responding to a media report that around 600,000 Kelantan residents who rely on wells and boreholes may face long-term health issues due to the high Fe and Mn content in the groundwater. — Bernama

K'tan govt to blame for residents' reliance on boreholes, says NGO

A recent report said around 600,000 Kelantan residents who rely on wells and boreholes may face long-term health issues due to the high iron and manganese content in the groundwater. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Environmental group Peka has accused the Kelantan government of providing inadequate water infrastructure for its residents, forcing them to rely on wells and boreholes as their primary source of water. Peka president Rajesh Nagarajan said this reliance on boreholes forces residents to depend on underground sources without sufficient monitoring or regulatory safeguards. His remarks follow an Utusan Malaysia report that around 600,000 Kelantan residents who rely on wells and boreholes may face long-term health issues due to the high iron and manganese content in the groundwater. The report quoted the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia as saying iron levels in Bachok and Kota Bharu had reached 3.79 mg/l, while manganese levels had reached 0.76 mg/l, far above the health ministry's standards of 0.3 mg/l and 0.1 mg/l, respectively. Responding to the report, Kelantan deputy menteri besar Fadzli Hassan said the state government was ready to work with the state health department to examine the levels of these substances. He said immediate action would be taken if a serious health hazard was found. However, Rajesh said the government should instead work to provide clean, treated and piped water. 'Water from boreholes may, and do, contain elevated levels of iron and manganese, which can lead to serious long-term health risks, particularly for children, pregnant women, and the elderly. 'These risks include Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, mitochondrial dysfunction, cardiovascular issues, as well as various respiratory and neurological disorders,' he said. Rajesh suggested that the state also emulate Thailand in harvesting rainwater as a sustainable water source, given Malaysia's abundant rainfall. 'In Thailand, schools, homes, and government buildings are equipped with rooftop collection systems, filtration units, and storage tanks to supply clean rainwater throughout the year. 'This approach reduces pressure on the supply of piped water,' he said.

‘Some starting in primary school': Hannah Yeoh says synthetic drug addiction now a Cabinet concern

KOTA BARU, July 3 — The issue of addiction to Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS) is a subject of focus and discussion at the Cabinet level, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. She stated that the government is collaborating closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to curb the online sale of the drug. 'The current trend shows that primary school pupils are starting to get involved with ATS. Some of them gain access to it through online sales, including via WhatsApp and other digital platforms. 'I urge parents to monitor their children's smartphone use. We can't allow them to use handphones without supervision,' she told Bernama after a working visit to the Kota Baru Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (Puspen), here today. She said the ministry will continue to help young people involved in drug abuse to get voluntary treatment at Puspen, urging parents to immediately contact Puspen if they notice behavioural changes in their children. Hannah said that according to the 2024 National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) statistics, 117,000 individuals aged between 15 and 39 were found to be involved in drug and substance abuse, with Kelantan recording the highest rate of addiction. 'I had the chance to speak with several clients here (Puspen Kota Baru). Most of them are still young, some as young as 17, 21 and started using drugs when they were in primary school. 'This trend is alarming, but I am impressed to hear first-hand that the treatment at Puspen has helped clients to recover and rebuild their lives,' she said. Hannah, who also met with the clients' parents, urged the public to be more open in seeking early intervention before addiction becomes more severe. She noted that the drug rehabilitation success rate at Puspen has now reached 79 per cent, but stressed that the real challenge is to ensure they do not return to the old networks associated with substance abuse. 'It is crucial that they do not reconnect with their old circles. Even after using drugs for over 10 years, with awareness and support, full recovery is possible,' she said, adding that young people who need help can voluntarily enter rehab centres. She said the ministry is also working closely with AADK to create awareness through various platforms, including video screenings at major cinemas such as TGV. 'We want young people to know they don't have to go through this alone. Help is available, and support is there,' she added. — Bernama
