Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Hosts Workshops for Abu Dhabi Students

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre has been hosting a series of cultural workshops aimed at school students across Abu Dhabi, with two recent sessions welcoming 39 students to the Mosque Library. Organised in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the workshops are part of the 'Al Shabab Al Banie' youth programme, which focuses on nurturing cultural awareness and creative thinking among younger generations.
Held throughout April and May, the workshops begin with guided tours of the Mosque Library, introducing students to its collection, services, and role as a cultural space. Sessions explore a range of topics including reading and language development, the historical role of maps, and forms of Islamic ornamentation and calligraphy.
Students also have the chance to visit the Light & Peace Museum and the Diya – A Universe of Light immersive experience, engaging with artefacts that showcase the breadth of Islamic civilisation and its global connections.
Since its opening in 2010, the Mosque Library has positioned itself as a centre for Islamic knowledge and intercultural dialogue. With support from H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the library holds nearly 3,000 rare and valuable books in 14 languages, alongside 50,000 microfilm copies of Arabic manuscripts covering Islamic sciences, arts, and history.
The workshops are part of ongoing efforts to make the Mosque Library a hub for youth engagement, encouraging curiosity while preserving and promoting Islamic heritage.

Turkish Ambassador Donates Rare Historical Books to Great Cairo Library
H-Tayea Turkish Ambassador to Egypt Salih Mutlu Şen visited the Great Cairo Library, also known as Princess Samiha's Palace, where he toured its halls and learned about its vast collection and cultural activities. He was received by the library's director, Yahya Riyad Youssef, who explained that the institution houses around 120,000 books in Arabic, English, and French. During his visit, Ambassador Şen presented the library with a selection of significant works, accompanied by a personal message. These included: Three Centuries: The History of a Family in Turkey and Egypt by Amina Fouad Tugay, niece of King Fouad, recently published in Egypt with the Ambassador's support. Islamic Monuments in the Ottoman Era, published in Istanbul by IRCICA under the patronage of Prof. Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu. From the Banks of the Nile to the Bosphorus, a bilingual Turkish-English work on the life and cultural heritage of the Muhammad Ali dynasty between Istanbul and Cairo. Remembering Ottoman Egypt: Ottoman Consciousness in Egypt, an English-language doctoral thesis analyzing the Ottoman legacy in Egypt. Turkish Cuisine with Centuries-Old Recipes, exploring Turkey's rich culinary traditions. The Ottoman State: History and Civilization, another IRCICA publication. The Turks in Egypt and Their Cultural Heritage by Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, a key contribution to the understanding of shared Turkish-Egyptian history and figures. Among People by Mehmet Arif Pasha, published in Ottoman Turkish, chronicling the lives of Muhammad Ali Pasha and Ibrahim Pasha. History of Egypt in the Ottoman Era, published by IRCICA. In total, sixteen books were donated, covering a wide spectrum of history, culture, and heritage. Director Yahya Riyad Youssef expressed deep gratitude for the Ambassador's generous contribution and guided him through various sections of the historic palace, which is carefully preserved as both a heritage landmark and a cultural hub. He highlighted the library's diverse monthly events and extended an invitation for the Ambassador to participate in future activities. Msheireb Downtown Embraces Walkable Urbanism in the Heart of Qatar
Msheireb Downtown in central Doha offers a walkable, climate-responsive urban model shaped by Qatari architecture, heritage, and a shift away from car-focused planning. Msheireb Downtown in Doha is emerging as a dense, walkable neighbourhood that is rooted in local architectural traditions and is responsive to Qatar's desert climate. The development spans more than a hundred buildings, each with its own identity but shaped by a cohesive design approach. Drawing from historic Islamic city planning, the district prioritises shade, privacy, and layered spatial experiences, with narrow passageways, screened façades, and courtyard-focused buildings that reflect centuries of regional urban practice. The district adopts a contemporary Qatari architectural language that gives the neighbourhood a clear and locally grounded identity. Buildings are arranged informally, reflecting the spatial qualities of the traditional Islamic city, where dense, shaded streets and irregular forms support comfort and human-scale movement. This project stands in contrast to the car-centric patterns that have shaped much of Doha's recent growth. Instead of prioritising roads and vehicles, the emphasis here is on walkability, climatic responsiveness, and a public realm designed for people. Colonnades, deep overhangs, and recessed façades contribute to a network of shaded routes that make the streets more inviting and usable throughout the day. Situated just west of the historic Souq and south of the Diwan, the centre of royal authority, Msheireb benefits from a prime location. The district is anchored by one of Doha's largest metro stations and connected to a complimentary light rail system, promoting a variety of sustainable transport options that help reduce dependence on private vehicles. Beneath the surface, a four-level underground network provides parking and essential services, allowing the streets above to be dedicated primarily to pedestrians. At the heart of the project is sustainability, with Msheireb boasting the highest concentration of LEED Platinum and Gold certified buildings worldwide. Msheireb's development is the result of an extensive international collaboration. The masterplan was led by Arup (lead consultant) and AECOM, with Allies and Morrison guiding the architectural voice and was the design architect of thirty buildings. The depth and diversity of the project have been further enriched by contributions from Mossessian Architecture, John McAslan + Partners, Adjaye Associates, Squire & Partners, Gensler, Eric Parry Architects, HOK, and Mangera Yvars. Each practice contributed its expertise, collectively crafting a coherent, and varied urban narrative. Commissioned under the leadership of Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Msheireb aspires to offer a new model of urbanism for the Gulf.
