Shams reports Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be named 2024-25 NBA MVP

Yahoo23-05-2025

The NBA is expected to make it official later tonight, but renowned insider Shams Charania has done what he does best — dropped a bomb: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be named the 2024–25 Most Valuable Player.
The announcement, slated for 7PM Eastern, caps off a spectacular regular season for the Oklahoma City Thunder guard, who led his team to the best record in the league and solidified his place at the top of the Association's food chain.
The Thunder's engine
Shai didn't just deliver spectacular individual performances — he was the engine behind a 68-win Thunder squad that quickly became the main contender for the ultimate prize. Night after night, the Canadian carried the load without theatrics or off-court headlines, producing a masterclass in consistency.

The soon-to-be 27-year-old averaged 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, and 5.0 rebounds over 76 games, shooting 52% from the field, 38% from deep, and just shy of a 90% from the line. Sure, one might say he lived at the free-throw line, but Shai earned every one of his points.
From the start of the season, it was clear he was on a mission — chasing the Michael Jordan Trophy after finishing second in the race last year. And in the end, that quiet, unshakable determination helped him edge out a loaded MVP field that included three-time winner Nikola Jokic and former two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. No small feat, especially when those two had dominant campaigns of their own.
Eyes on the ultimate prize
As sweet as the MVP is, the Thunder star is already looking past it. Shai's eyes have always been on the ultimate prize — the Larry O'Brien trophy. And judging by how he's started these playoffs, that fire hasn't dimmed one bit. He's kept up his regular-season rhythm with big-time performances in the first two rounds against the Memphis Grizzlies and the Denver Nuggets.

And if he keeps this up, it might just be a matter of time before he adds a Finals MVP to his résumé, too.

ESPN has ‘hopeful' LeBron James, Stephen Curry wish

The post ESPN has 'hopeful' LeBron James, Stephen Curry wish appeared first on ClutchPoints. Two of the top NBA stars, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James and Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, may be wrapping up their playing careers soon, and ESPN is hoping to snag them for top roles after they retire. Advertisement While appearing on The Main Event with Andrew Marchand podcast (via Awful Announcing), ESPN's lead NBA producer Tim Corrigan talked about some current players he would like to see in the broadcast booth. He seemed 'hopeful' James, Curry, and Chris Paul would eventually go down this path. 'We're hopeful,' said Corrigan. 'You talk about those two guys [James and Curry], besides their insane physical gifts and talents and all the work they've done, their basketball minds, we would all benefit from more exposure to that, right? And I would say somebody like Chris Paul, who did a little bit with us last year, coming in and jumping in the studio and doing all that, just to spend the time, to see how they see the game and feel the game and recognize, there's so many stories about LeBron knowing the call the other team's making and telling his guys on the court, 'Here's what they're going to do' based on who's coming on the court. 'We would all benefit from that in live events and things like that. To have the mind of people who think that way and see that way and have studied the game as intently as he has,' he continued. Will LeBron James and Stephen Curry become NBA broadcasters after they retire from the NBA? Nothing is certain, but James and Curry would both have opportunities if they wanted to get into broadcasting. James hosts the Mind the Game podcast. JJ Reddick and Steve Nash have co-hosted it with him. Advertisement He also seemed open to it, saying, 'I see Tom Brady doing it; he's been great so far. We will see, even if it's just a guest appearance, a game or two when I am done playing, but it's always fun to give back to the game.' Curry, meanwhile, recently discussed the chances of him getting into broadcasting after his playing career with CNBC. He conceded he would be 'more patient' than Fox commentator Tom Brady, who stepped into the booth a year after his retirement but didn't rule it out. 'I think about what would be the right opportunity for me, 'cause anything that I do, I want to be all in on it,' Curry explained. 'Right now, just doing your homework on the different pathways and options that might be available.' James, 40, and Curry, 37, are heading into their 23rd and 17th seasons in the NBA, respectively. They are entering the twilights of their careers, and they will have opportunities to stay involved with the game once they hang it up. Kevin Love compares James Dolan to Vince McMahon after Tom Thibodeau firing

The post Kevin Love compares James Dolan to Vince McMahon after Tom Thibodeau firing appeared first on ClutchPoints. When the New York Knicks officially fired Tom Thibodeau after coming up short in the Eastern Conference Finals, it took the sports world by storm. Advertisement Fans in New York were decidedly mixed, outside observers put the move into the context of their preferred fandoms, and some folks even had jokes on the matter, be they with lighthearted jabs or as biting rebuttals of his unique style of coaching. Five-time All-Star Kevin Love firmly fell into the final category but whether he meant to be funny or pointed remains to be seen, as he used the opportunity to compare Knicks owner James Dolan to disgraced former WWE owner Vince McMahon, who would often fire his employees – at least in a televised kayfabe sense – with the dramatic flair of a certified entertainer. Now, on the surface, this post is very funny, with Love's former teammate LeBron James yucking it up in the comments section with a series of laughing emojis, but underneath, what is the NBA Champion forward trying to say? Is he suggesting that Dolan is using the loss as a chance to shake things up in dramatic fashion, even if it was against his own self-interest? Advertisement As Love pointed out, Thibs was the first head coach to take the Knicks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 25 years, and as was often the case with Mr. McMahon, the shortsighted decision to fire folks in the heat of the moment would often come back to bite him in the end. Is Dolan the heel running wild over the Knicks organization just like Mr. McMahon was in WWE? Or was this simply a funny opportunity for Love to make light of the situation? Whether the Knicks' decision was right or wrong remains to be seen, but with the proverbial deed officially done, fans will now have to wait and see what Dolan has cooking to get his organization past the highest ceiling they've reached this century. For the sake of Knicks fans, let's hope firing Tom Thibodeau doesn't blow up in Dolan's face like so many of McMahon's choices in WWE.

Dominique Wilkins on whose team the Lakers are right now

Ever since LeBron James' arrival in 2018, the Los Angeles Lakers have belonged to him, on and off the court. In fact, some have criticized him and his camp for exerting too much control over the franchise, which, critics say, led to some poor personnel moves. But four months ago, the Lakers landed a young, generational superstar in Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks. It seemed to herald a passing of the torch from James to Doncic while setting Doncic up to be the face of the franchise for the next decade or so. Advertisement Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins said that the Lakers are now Doncic's team, even though James is expected to return this fall for his 23rd NBA season. Via Esports Insider: 'It's definitely Luka's team,' Wilkins said. 'A 25-year-old guy compared to a guy who is 40. You should be willing to hand over those ranks to him. I don't think that's even a question. I think that's what the plan is.' Ever since they landed Doncic, the Lakers have been looking to build the rest of the team around and for him. That includes their quest for a starting-level center, which started with the failed trade for Mark Williams in February. They would love to get their hands on a relatively young and athletic big man who not only defends and rebounds at a high level but is also a lob threat. Doncic did well playing with big men who are lob threats while with the Dallas Mavericks, whether it was Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II or Kristaps Porziņģis. Advertisement Gafford is one big man L.A. has been linked to as far as a possible trade target this summer.
