Milan part ways with Conceicao after disappointing season

(Reuters) - AC Milan have sacked coach Sergio Conceicao, the Serie A side announced on Thursday, following a disappointing season in which they finished ninth in the league and missed out on European competition for the first time since 2019. "The Club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism and dedication shown during their time leading the team over the past few months," Milan said in a statement. Conceicao was appointed in December as a replacement for Paulo Fonseca and got off to an impressive start as he led Milan to victory in the Italian Super Cup in his second match in charge. However, results in the league did not improve under the Portuguese and they were also eliminated from the Champions League in a playoff loss to Dutch side Feyenoord in February. Milan's last hope of salvaging the season ended earlier in May with a bitter 1–0 loss to Bologna in the Coppa Italia final. Conceicao was not on the touchline for the season's final match against Monza at San Siro, having received a one-match ban after being sent off in the defeat by AS Roma last weekend — a result that ended Milan's last hope of securing a European spot.

Man United boss Amorim says it is tough to face team's angry fans around the world

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim during a press conference REUTERS/Tyrone Siu (Reuters) - Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim said his team cannot hide after they were booed off in their defeat in Malaysia ahead of their friendly with Hong Kong on Friday. Three days after they concluded their worst Premier League season with a 15th-placed finish, Amorim's team kicked off their Asian tour with a 1-0 loss to ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur, with many among the 72,000 fans voicing their displeasure. "It's hard to face the fans around the world (after such a poor season)," Amorim told a press conference on Thursday. "(But) it is clear, we cannot hide. "If one thing is really important in this club, we need to face our fans in this moment, and give something to our fans around the globe. We want to do that, but sometimes it's really hard. "We were not really focused in the last game (on Wednesday), everyone can feel it. In that moment I can understand the fans and the players." Harry Maguire, Andre Onana and Diogo Dalot will not feature in Friday's match as they travelled to India instead for a club sponsor event. Amorim also ruled Luke Shaw out. Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee did not play in Malaysia, but the Portuguese coach gave them a clean bill of health at Hong Kong Stadium for their final match of the tour. "Of course the team is tired because we flew to Malaysia and with the jet lag we had a game in difficult conditions," Amorim said. "But we are ready to play again and are really happy to be here." Hong Kong's coach Ashley Westwood, a former United academy player, suggested that Amorim's team would have preferred post-season rest over extra games and travel. "If truth be told, no players want to do (a post-season tour), you want to recover," Westwood told reporters. "Most Manchester United players are reporting for international duty on June 2. They probably need this like a hole in the head."

Man City will complete transfers before Club World Cup, says Al Mubarak

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak is seen before the match Action Images via Reuters/Lee Smith/File Photo (Reuters) - Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has promised the club will be ready with a new squad in time for the FIFA Club World Cup and that their transfer moves will be very swift. Premier League clubs agreed to open a pre-Club World Cup transfer window, opens new tab on June 1 for 10 days to allow teams to sign players before the tournament. "We have clearly identified who exactly are the targets, in what positions, and we have our clear number one option, our clear number two option," Al Mubarak said in an interview with City's club media channels. "And we'll go about our business and it will be very clear, very swift. And our objective is to try to be ready with the new squad for the Club World Cup." City face Wydad AC in their first game of the tournament on June 18. The team, bidding for a fifth successive Premier League title, suffered a mid-season free fall and finished third in the table, not securing a Champions League berth until the final day of the season. Al Mubarak admitted City had not been successful in last summer's transfer window. "Last summer, we probably should have been more aggressive in some of the changes we needed to do," Al Mubarak said. "We didn't do that and that ended up costing us this year. We already started that rebuild of this team in January." City brought in Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez during the January window. They lost to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final, however, and ended the season without a trophy for the first time since 2016-17. "I think all the players, they're excited, they're excited about coming back. Nobody feels good about how we finished the season," Al Mubarak said. "They want to come back hungry. And I can see the hunger. I was speaking to Rodri as an example, he's looking for games. Erling (Haaland) didn't want to go on vacation." Spanish midfielder Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner, suffered a serious knee injury in September and did not return to action until the season's final two games.
