ICICI Bank account holders will now have to keep Rs 50,000 as minimum balance vs Rs 10,000 earlier

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on August 9, 2025, 09:33 IST ICICI Bank has announced a sharp increase in the minimum average monthly balance (MAB) requirement for its savings account holders in metro and urban locations. Effective October 1, 2025, customers in these areas will need to maintain a minimum balance of Rs 50,000, compared to the current requirement of Rs 10,000. The move marks a fivefold jump in the balance requirement, aimed at revising the bank's account maintenance norms in line with market conditions. According to the bank's updated schedule of charges, non-maintenance of the minimum balance will attract penalties as per the revised slab rates, which will also come into effect from October 1. The revision applies only to customers with savings accounts in metro and urban branches, while semi-urban and rural account holders will continue with the existing minimum balance requirements. ICICI Bank has advised customers to review their account balances ahead of the change to avoid non-maintenance charges. The update is part of a broader industry trend where banks are reviewing account-related fees and conditions to align with evolving cost structures and deposit mobilization strategies. Cabinet approves Rs 30,000 crore compensation for PSU oil companies' LPG losses

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on August 8, 2025, 16:36 IST The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Rs 30,000 crore in compensation to three public sector oil marketing companies — Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) — for losses incurred on domestic LPG sales. The amount will be distributed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in twelve tranches. Domestic LPG cylinders are supplied at regulated prices by these OMCs. With international LPG prices remaining elevated through 2024-25, the companies absorbed the cost increase without passing it on to consumers, resulting in substantial under-recoveries. Despite these losses, supply of domestic LPG was maintained across the country. The approved compensation will help the OMCs meet key needs, including crude and LPG procurement, debt servicing and capital expenditure, ensuring uninterrupted LPG availability. The move also reinforces the government's commitment to protect consumers from global price volatility and maintain access to clean cooking fuel under schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
