Ex-police station with a backyard jail cell sells for $1m+
The ex-police station at 1082 Nepean Highway, Highett, now a five-bedroom home, proved to be hot property when it sold for $1.115m under the hammer.
Ray White Carnegie director Tom Grieve declined to comment on the sales price but the Herald Sun attended the auction.
Mr Grieve said police enthusiasts and history buffs were among the auction crowd.
'Somebody who came to watch the auction actually wanted to buy the door of the jail cell which is quite cool, it's quite heavy with all the bolts and latches,' Mr Grieve said.
The house's buyers, Jess and her partner, said they were hoping to renovate the abode and potentially rent it out down the track.
'At the moment we are keen to get in and get the carpet up,' Jess said.
'Who knows what we will find, I am excited to see what it's going to bring.'
She said they would likely retain the old jail cell as a storage space.
The couple have previously renovated their first home, finding 1940s-era newspapers and milk bottle slips in the process.
The Highett residence was listed with $1.2m-$1.3m asking range.
In the city's east, one of Saturday's priciest sales was a circa-1892 house at 37 Mayston St, Hawthorn East, which changed hands for $3.831m.
Jellis Craig Boroondara's Mark Salvati said the 'firecracker' auction kicked off with a $3.5m bid.
'There were two bidders and it was like ping pong between the two of them,' Mr Salvati said.
He noted this his agency's Melbourne branches had been seeing high clearance rates in recent weeks.
According to PropTrack, Victoria recorded a preliminary 66.6 per cent clearance rate from 410 early auction results this week.
A total 795 homes across the state are slated to go under the hammer next week.
Ray White Victoria's chief auctioneer Jeremy Tyrell with the Reserve Bank set to meet on Monday and Tuesday, a potential rate cut 'could really see the dam walls of supply burst open'.
'Buyer confidence during the week was very strong as competition ramped up with buyers keen to get in ahead of the market before any further rate drops,' Mr Tyrell added.
'As the real estate market begins to see positive growth across the state and in the capital, the stage is set for a big spring selling season.'

WTM on trail of large gold corridor
Special Report: Waratah Minerals shot up more than 40% in early trading after drilling at Spur project in the East Lachlan region of NSW reinforced the potential of the Spur gold corridor to host a large-scale, high-grade epithermal gold system. WTM says multiple high-grade gold zones extend Spur Gold Corridor Project shaping up to host sizeable epithermal system in NSW Company undertaking extensional RC and diamond drilling The latest assays returned: 208.7m at 1.17 g/t gold from 514m including 89m at 1.96 g/t from 614m and including 38m at 3.61 g/t from 665m (drill hole SPRCD062 at Consols prospect); 27m at 1.03 g/t Au from 163m (SPRC078 at Essex Zone); 28m at 0.88 g/t Au from 160m (SPRC077 at Essex Zone); and 21m at 0.73 g/t Au from 133m (SPRC076 at Thistle Zone). Waratah Minerals (ASX:WTM) also found visible gold at Consols, which it says represents a major extension of the Spur Gold Corridor. A broad spaced drill program is planned for Consols to determine the extent of the mineralised system from surface to approximately 450m depth. Scale and significance becoming clear The company is confident the drilling demonstrates the potential scale, significance and growth upside of the rapidly emerging Spur Gold Corridor. 'Drill hole SPRCD062 represents a pivotal drill hole for Waratah at our Spur project,' MD Peter Duerden said. 'We have always believed that the epithermal gold mineralisation of the Spur Gold Corridor crossed the Essex Fault and should extend to the northeast, despite historical drilling having been unable to locate extensions. 'The decision by the exploration team to extend SPRCD062 twice based on encouraging geological indicators has resulted in the identification of a new mineralised zone including visible gold with high grades at Consols which represents a major extension of the Spur Gold Corridor and the best intercept at the project to date. 'With the ongoing exploration success and a high-level team in place the company is planning to accelerate activity at the project.' Extensional RC and diamond drilling is now underway at the Spur Project to define epithermal gold across the >1.5km Spur Gold Corridor whilst simultaneously testing for porphyry mineralisation in the Breccia West area. Sean Buckley: Ultra Tune boss' stalking charge dropped in Melbourne court
One of two stalking charges has been dropped against the high-profile boss of automotive chain Ultra Tune. Sean Buckley has faced a long-running legal battle over allegations he stalked his model ex-partner in 2020. The entrepreneur and horse mogul was alleged to have stalked bikini model Jennifer Cruz Cole, who previously worked as one of his company's controversial 'rubber girls'. Mr Buckley was first charged in 2020 after Ms Cole accused him of 'punching her in the face 10 times'. Along with his co-accused, Wade D'Andrea, he faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday. Mr D'Andrea faces two charges, one for stalking another person and the other for maintaining a listening device. The prosecution told magistrate Malcolm Thomas on Monday morning that an issue had arisen with one of the witnesses. After a short adjournment, the prosecution withdrew a charge of stalking against Mr Buckley that was previously alleged to have taken place between October 18, 2020 and December 2, 2020, as a result of the issue with the witness. The issue was not heard in open court. Mr Buckley still faces another stalking charge from April 27, 2020 to July 3, 2020. He also faces charges including 'make threat to kill', 'common law assault' and 'maintain a listening device'. Mr Buckley has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Ms Cole is a former Ultra Tune 'rubber girl' who appeared in racy ads for the company that featured women in skin-tight outfits. She appeared in a well-known ad beside Pamela Anderson and Warwick Capper. Ultra Tune has more than 270 franchises nationwide and turns over $220m each year. Mr Buckley will reappear in court on Tuesday. Brendan Kearns Cadet Journalist Brendan Kearns is a cadet journalist with News Corp Australia.
