Motherwell v Rangers injury news: 6 out and 5 doubts as Russell Martin sweats over inclusion of key trio
In the away dug out, Russell Martin will be buoyed by his side's 3-1 aggregate victory over Panathinaikos in the Champions League qualifiers, but will have full focus on ensuring his new look Ibrox squad begins their domestic campaign with a bang at they aim to overthrow Celtic as the club's dominant force this season.
Meanwhile, new Motherwell head coach Jens Berthel Askou will be hoping to take the club's strong Premier Sports Cup form into the league, with the Danish boss side hoping his team can pick up an opening day result on home soil against tough opposition.
Both sides have injuries worries ahead of the clash, however, with up to 10 players potentially missing the game on Saturday afternoon.

Antman was the man as far as Rangers fans were concerned on his debut at Ibrox It was the best performance of the Russell Martin era at Rangers yet after a forward line of new signing Djeidi Gassama, Cyriel Dessers and new signing Oliver Antman blew Viktoria Plzen away. They may be filming Spider-Man in Glasgow but Antman was the only Avenger Rangers fans were interested as he started on the right of an exciting forward three. In the end it was Gassama at the double and Dessers converting from the penalty spot that earned them a 3-0 win that leaves them as good as through to the Champions League playoff round. But Antman was arguably the most impressive of the three – he won the penalty for Dessers and crossed brilliantly for Gassama's second. Gutsy boss Martin rung in the changes with Nicolas Raskin and captain James Tavernier among those axed. There were impressive performances all over the pitch – the only man who didn't really contribute was Jack Butland who barely had a sniff of the ball at Ibrox. Here's how Record Sport rated the players. Rangers player ratings JACK BUTLAND: Rangers may not have made it this far without their rejuvenated keeper but thankfully for Martin, this time he barely had a save to make. Tipped over a long-range effort late on. 7 MAX AARONS: Finally given a chance to show what he can do on his natural right-hand side of defence as he took James Tavernier's spot. Looked far more settled on his favoured side, as he demonstrated with a sublime ball in behind for goal No3. 7 JOHN SOUTTAR: Skipper for the night had to defend on the edge on occasion, as required by Rangers' new risk-and-reward mindset but kept his cool under pressure. 7 NASSER DJIGA: Giant Wolves loanee seems to grow in stature by the week. Solid defensively but looking more and more assured on the ball. Vital block on Vydra prevented Czechs from scoring opener. 7 JEFTE: Martin had overlooked the Brazilian during his first three games in charge but he's firmly in the gaffer's plan now. Slack early pass almost caused problems and picked up a needless booking. But definitely gave Rangers a better balance down the left. 7 JOE ROTHWELL: Another steady Eddie performance from the Englishman in front of the back-four as he kept Rangers ticking over. Tired after the break. 7 MOHAMED DIOMANDE: And up and down night for the Ivorian. Lucky Plzen didn't pounce when the ball got caught under his feet in the first half. Sorted them quicker early in second half as he clipped the crossbar. 7 LYALL CAMERON: Huge chance for the former Dundee kid as he snatched Nico Raskin's place. Martin was looking for extra energy in the engine room and he certainly delivered not only that but some nice touches too. Deserved the fans' ovation as he was replaced. 8 OLIVER ANTMAN: What an introduction! New £4million signing was flung straight in for his first start just 24 hours after meeting his team-mates. Took half an hour to find his feet before announcing himself with a surging run for the penalty and a pin-point cross for Gassama's second. 9 DJEIDI GASSAMA: Gers' Euro hero just can't stop scoring. It's now four in three Champions League clashes for the Frenchman, who looks to have already repaid the £2.5million it took to sign him from Sheffield Wednesday. 9 CYRIEL DESSERS: Last year's top scorer has been made to wait for his first start but picked up where he left off, tucking home a cool penalty after he choose the perfect moment to release Gassama for the opener. 8 Subs NICO RASKIN: Replaced Rothwell midway through second half but was bizarrely already on a booking after copping a yellow for stopping a Plzen throw-in while warming up. Showed no signs of disappointment at being dropped. 4 DANILO: Gave Dessers a breather with 18 minutes left. Chance blocked after great cut-back from Antman. 3

Djeidi Gassama dazzles for Rangers again as Russell Martin rewarded for ripping up team sheet
The Light Blues put one foot in the Champions League play-off round with a comfortable win over Viktoria Plzen At Fir Park, he roasted his players. But at Ibrox, Russell Martin's Rangers were cooking with Gass. The manager's two new wingers, Djeidi Gassama and Oliver Antman, were on fire in their Champions League qualifying win over Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen. The young Frenchman bagged a brace - that's four goals in three European games for him already - while £4million Finnish flying machine Antman produced a brilliant debut display. Martin's side recovered from their poor performance at Motherwell on Saturday to secure a vital first-leg victory. And the gaffer's bold decision to drop stars James Tavernier and Nico Raskin to the bench paid off. Martin slated his squad at the weekend, accusing them of being egotistical and selfish. But there was none of that here, as Cyriel Dessers' penalty added to Gassama's double and helped them put one foot in the Champions League play-off. If Rangers can finish the job in Plzen next week, they'll face either RB Salzburg or Club Brugge for a crack at the lucrative group phase. Here's our five talking points from Ibrox. Tough Love Russell Martin said the Fir Park evisceration of his players came from a place of love. But it's unlikely that Tavernier or Raskin would have felt that when the team - which was leaked earlier in the day - was announced at Ibrox. The manager had to back up his threat by leaving players out who - according to him - went into self-preservation mode against Motherwell. He also praised certain players, like Lyall Cameron and Dessers, so his starting 11 against Plzen was always going to be an acid test of his leadership. And boy did he make big calls? Skipper Tavernier was dropped, along with the club's prized asset, Belgian star Raskin. The man the fans love to hate, Kieran Dowell, was also binned and so was Brazilian striker Danilo. But demoting Tavernier and Raskin to the bench was a huge decision, which would have had repercussions irrespective of the result. But after years of domestic failure, some fans will argue that for Rangers to rid itself of a mentality the gaffer called out on Saturday - radical changes had to be made. Rangers reaction This was far more like what the manager wants from his new-look Rangers team. He wasn't happy - quite rightly - after their opening day Premiership draw in Lanarkshire and he gave his players both barrels. The players' response could have gone either way, especially after he benched two big hitters. But with six summer signings in his starting line-up, his team produced a much better performance. The introduction of two quality wingers, in Gassama and Antman, makes a massive difference to the way Martin wants to play. That gave Rangers a real attacking threat, which they didn't have in the last round of the Champions League against Panathinaikos. Max Aarons didn't have his best game but at least with him in his natural position, and Jefte on the left, Martin's team had more balance. And most importantly of all after their passive, insipid showing at Motherwell, was their work-rate. There was no self-preservation last night, other than a side ensuring they got a much needed European victory and moving a step closer to a dream Champions League berth. Captain's Contract With Tavernier dropped, Martin had another important call to make on who should lead Rangers out as skipper. Previously, Jack Butland was vice-captain but he wasn't given the armband against the Czechs. Instead, the responsibility was given to John Souttar who looks like he's going to play a key role in Martin's Rangers revolution. Certainly, the Scotland centre-back is establishing a partnership with on-loan Wolves defender Nasser Djiga, who was excellent. But there's one big, unresolved issue around Souttar and that's his Ibrox contract. He's now got less than a year left on his current deal and there's been no news of fresh talks between him and the club. Back in October, Rangers started negotiations with Souttar but nothing was agreed. By the end of last season, he admitted it was put on hold with so much uncertainty at the club amidst the American takeover and Philippe Clement's sacking. But with Martin now in charge, it's a situation which has to be ironed out. If Tavernier's going to be out of the team with Souttar as captain - surely the manager will want him tied down on a new, long-term deal? Oliver's Army Rangers' new Finnish winger Antman was immediately thrown in for his Ibrox bow. And it didn't take long for him to have the backing of the home support with an impressive display. He was last year's Eredivisie top assist maker and he's effectively got two for his new club already. The 23-year-old only arrived from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday and made an instant impact. Deployed on the right flank, his decision making was good, knowing when to keep possession or go at his man. Antman showed his explosive pace but was also willing to track back and help team-mates, which pleased the fans - and is exactly what his manager wants. Antman had a vital role to play in Gers' second and third goals. First, he collected the ball in his own half and picked out fellow winger Gassama before driving into the box and being fouled to win a penalty which Dessers converted. Then he raced away from his man in the second half and produced a perfect cross for the Frenchman to head home for 3-0. Rangers finally look to have signed a quality right winger who can influence games. And with Gassama scoring freely on the other flank, Martin will be delighted with his new wide men. Rangers boss Martin might not even have known who Cameron was when he arrived at Ibrox. Yet the ex-Dundee kid was the first new signing through the doors this summer after a Bosman move from Dens Park. In pre-season, it looked like he'd struggle to get game time amidst a flurry of expensive acquisitions. But Cameron has worked hard in the background and earned his chance from the start in Europe. And the 22-year-old didn't let his gaffer down, with a terrific display. What Cameron lacks in physicality he makes up for in work-rate, tenacity and game intelligence. He looked at home on the Champions League stage and, importantly, as if he's completely tuned into what Martin wants from his advanced midfielders. Rangers need a Scottish identity, which Cameron gives them, and he might just prove to be Martin's surprise package this season.

Djeidi Gassama brace puts much-changed Rangers in control against Viktoria Plzen
Russell Martin's bold team selection paid off as Rangers battered Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifier at Ibrox. The Gers boss hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application, and captain James Tavernier and midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names among the expected changes. Martin got the required reaction as winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes with his third European goal in three ties before returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval. Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored a third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win. The Light Blues will be heavy favourites for the return game in the Czech Republic next Tuesday, with a play-off tie against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium awaiting the winners. After pointing the finger at his under-performers at the weekend, all eyes were on Martin's team selection and he made significant changes. Along with Tavernier and Raskin – arguably Gers' best player last season – Danilo and Kieran Dowell were left out. New signing Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, made his debut – and was terrific – with left-back Jefte, midfielder Lyall Cameron and Dessers returning while John Souttar was named captain. The Ibrox crowd was more subdued than usual on a big European night, initially. In the seventh minute Plzen's lofty striker Rafiu Durosinmi headed a cross from Amar Memic past the post but it was Gassama who struck first, playing a one-two with Dessers at the edge of the visitors' box before confidently curling the ball past keeper Florian Wiegele. After Gers defender Nasser Djiga brilliantly blocked a goal-bound shot from visiting captain Matej Vydra, Antman's drive from a Gassama cut-back at the other end was cleared off the line by Vaclav Jamelka. Bizarrely Raskin, warming up on the sidelines, was booked by French referee Clement Turpin for apparently trying to interfere at a Plzen throw-in as the Czech side began to exert some pressure. However, when a driving run into the box by Antman ended with him being barged over by Vydra, referee Turpin pointed to the spot for a soft penalty and Dessers sent Wiegele the wrong way. Rangers started the second half strongly and within three minutes midfielder Mohamed Diomande struck the bar with an effort from the edge of the box. However, the third soon arrived as Gassama grabbed his second when he bulleted in a header from a pinpoint Antman cross from the right. There were occasional moments of sloppiness in the Gers ranks throughout the rest of the second half but they remained unpunished. Raskin, Danilo, and Tavernier all came off the bench when the job was done, before in the 83rd minute Gers keeper Jack Butland made a good save from a powerful drive from Memic. After the negativity of Fir Park, it was a more positive performance from the home side although there has to be much more to come from Martin's men.
