Jawi a shared national heritage that Johor govt is promoting, says exco

THE Jawi script is not exclusive to any one community but belongs to all Malaysians, says Johor Islamic Religious Affairs committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid (BN-Semerah).
He said the use of Jawi was enshrined under Section 9 of National Language Act 1963/67, making it a recognised part of Malaysia's national heritage.
'It is not a racial issue, but a national recognition of our shared script,' he said at the state assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar.
He was responding to a question from Haslinda Salleh (BN-Tenang), who inquired about the state government's efforts to promote and strengthen Jawi usage in Johor.
He went on to say that he took the initiative of getting all state assemblymen with their name tags written in the Roman alphabet and Jawi.
'I hope everyone will wear their new name tags – including Bentayan,' he said, referring to Ng Yak Howe (PH-Bentayan) seated in the opposition bloc.
'Don't think 'aiyah, this is only for Malays or Islam'. Jawi is recognised by law.'
He then asked Ng: 'Will you wear it?'
After a non-verbal response from Ng, Mohd Fared cheerfully said, 'Luckily, he said yes.'
He said discussions had taken place with bodies such as Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), Johor Heritage Foundation and Johor Cultural Council to encourage wider use of Jawi beyond just Islamic institutions.
'We have organised regular programmes like quizzes and writing competitions to promote Jawi,' he said.
'We have also proposed making the fourth week of every month 'Jawi Week', with activities like 'Let's Read Jawi' and setting up Jawi corners in government offices,' Mohd Fared added.

Job Scams A Key Issue Under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship

PUTRAJAYA, May 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair in 2025, has pledged to take decisive action against transnational job scam syndicates, placing the issue at the forefront of its regional agenda. Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, Wisma Putra, in a statement on Friday said it takes the issue of job scam syndicates seriously. The ministry expressed its sincere appreciation to the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) as well as other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and members of the media, for their continued efforts in drawing attention to the plight of Malaysians who have fallen victim to job scam syndicates across the region. 'Malaysia remains fully committed to working closely with ASEAN counterparts and all relevant stakeholders, including civil society, to strengthen preventive measures, enhance regional collaboration, and ensure protection for all victims,' added the statement. The Foreign Ministry said it has taken concrete steps to raise the matter with fellow ASEAN Member States, including at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Langkawi in January and the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit earlier this week. At the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat held in Langkawi in January, ministers reaffirmed their joint commitment to addressing transnational crimes, including people smuggling, trafficking in persons, drug trafficking, cybercrime, money laundering, and the rising threat of online scams. During the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting, held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, Malaysia stressed the urgent need for decisive regional action in tackling cross-border crimes. As a result, ASEAN ministers agreed to review the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime (2016-2025) to strengthen regional coordination and ensure that its successor documents address emerging and evolving criminal threats. In the 46th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN leaders also expressed strong determination to intensify cooperation under the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC), with an emphasis on law enforcement collaboration to combat online scams and trafficking in persons.

Malaysia elected president of UN-Habitat Assembly for 2025-2029 term

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has officially been elected president of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) General Assembly for the 2025-2029 term. According to the Housing and Local Government Ministry's statement, Malaysia made history when its presidency was unanimously approved by all 193 member states at the UN-Habitat Assembly in Nairobi on Friday (May 30), and the announcement was made during the Election of the Officers of the Bureau at the UN-Habitat Assembly. The Malaysian delegation is represented by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, and Malaysia takes over the role from Mexico, which represented the Latin America and Caribbean region in the previous term. During this term, Malaysia will hold the presidency and a seat on the Executive Board jointly with the United Arab Emirates to represent the Asia Pacific region. Nga, in his acceptance speech at UN-Habitat, said Malaysia took on this role as president together with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and emphasised shared commitment that symbolised regional solidarity and urban sustainability. "To strengthen multilateralism and the UN-Habitat Agenda, both Malaysia and the UAE call upon member states to redouble their efforts in implementing the New Urban Agenda,' he said. Nga has said it was a strong testament to the country to be entrusted with the presidency by a United Nations body involving 193 member states. "This is a historic breakthrough for Malaysia. It not only proves that our country has returned to the international stage under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, but also highlights our growing international influence. In light of this latest development, the support of the people is more important than ever. "This is a shared glory for all Malaysians, as we continue to demonstrate our commitment and achievements in sustainable urban development, with 53 per cent of our 156 local governments now leading Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR) (to assess their progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals), putting us on track for full nationwide coverage by 2030,' he added. Meanwhile, Director-General of the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme (UAE), Mohammed Ibrahim Al Mansoori, expressed honour at the joint leadership with Malaysia. "This collaboration is marked by strategic coordination and a shared purpose for a better future,' he said. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the UN-Habitat Assembly was established in 1975 and elevated into a full programme by the UN General Assembly in 2001. It is the highest global decision-making body on sustainable urbanisation and human settlements that convenes every four years and plays a critical role in shaping global policies for cities and communities. As President, Malaysia will work closely with the UN-Habitat Executive Board as well as global partners to strengthen multilateral collaboration, as well as promote inclusive, climate-resilient and sustainable cities worldwide. - Bernama
