Kota Kinabalu: The State Government remains committed to supporting initiatives that enhance healthcare services for the people, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor (pic). 'Dental professionals play a crucial role in the overall health of our people, and the government is constantly looking for ways to improve access to high-quality dental care. 'This congress serves as a platform to exchange ideas on how we can all work together to ensure that dental care continues to evolve and thrive in our state and region,' he said at the 13th Borneo Dental Congress and Trade Exhibition at the Magellan Sutera Harbour, here Saturday. His speech was delivered by his Political Secretary Datuk Dr Roland Chia. Hajiji said the congress theme 'Beam Forward, Illuminate Progress' was apt as it reflected the ongoing progress and innovation within the dental profession. 'Dentistry, as we know it, has seen remarkable advancements over the years, and this congress presents a unique opportunity for you in the dental profession to exchange knowledge, share the latest advancement and technology, and collaborate on ideas that will drive the future of dental care. 'We all recognise the importance of oral health in maintaining overall well-being. The connection between oral health and general health is undeniable, and as we face new challenges in healthcare, it is essential that we continue to innovate and strive for excellence in the way we provide dental care,' he said. Hajiji hoped this congress will pave the way for new ideas, solutions, and innovations that will benefit not only the dental profession but also the communities you serve. 'I hope this congress will inspire you to continue pushing the boundaries of dental care and build lasting connections that will shape the future of dentistry. About over 656 exhibitor personnel and delegates from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and India had participated in the three days event which started from May 1 until May 4 this year. According to Dr Angelmerici Wong, the event brings together leading dental professionals and industry players under the forward-looking theme, 'Beam Forward, Illuminate Progress'. She said the delegates were gathering in Sabah to share knowledge, explore advancements and network with peers, embodying the event's core aim of fostering cross-border collaboration and enhancing dental practices across nations. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Umno Wanita Chief Datuk Noraini Idris wants the Health Minister to address the parking shortage at the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital (HWKKS) in Likas, describing the situation as a matter of human dignity rather than mere convenience. The former senator said she received numerous complaints from pregnant women forced to walk long distances in their condition due to inadequate parking facilities at the hospital. Advertisement 'I cannot imagine how a mother carrying a small child feels or an anxious husband accompanying his wife who is about to give birth, having to circle around looking for parking while the life and health of their loved ones are at stake,' Noraini said in a statement, here, Thursday. 'This is no longer a matter of comfort. This is a matter of dignity, a matter of humanity,' she said. She cited cases where heavily pregnant women have had to park as far away as the Kingfisher commercial area and walk to the hospital in hot weather, rain or even while experiencing labour pains. She noted that the parking issue extends beyond the HWKKS' to nearly all major hospitals in Sabah, including Queen Elizabeth Hospital I and II, Tawau Hospital and Sandakan Hospital. State-wide vape ban will not work; it'll only proliferate illicit drug-induced products
THE Malaysian Vapers Alliance (MVA) – a non-profit advocacy group that supports vaping s to help smokers quit – has opposed ban sale of vape products by state governments while calling on state policymakers to work alongside the federal government to regulate vape products in Malaysia. This is because a ban on sale of vape products by stopping the issuance of business licence for local traders will only create negative consequences especially when the federal government has already enacted laws to regulate vape products, according to MVA's president Khairil Azizi Khairuddin. 'Consumers want access to regulated products. But this situation will only force consumers to seek products from alternative source including illegal channels which will lead to flourishing of illegal vape products and underground market,' he envisages. MVA further revealed that banned substance, notably products laced and infused with drugs are not sold in vape shops but on online platforms including social media channels and applications such as Telegram. Last year alone, the Home Minister had during a Dewan Rakyat session cited a study by Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital which found that 65% of underage vape users in Kelantan were found to be vaping a substance known as magic mushrooms although the state has stopped licence issuance for vape shops and vape trading since 2015. 'Clearly, the ban on vape shops is not the right solution,' asserted Khairil. 'Instead, the authorities should ensure that only regulated vape products are available for sale in vape shops, increase enforcement efforts against the sale of products laced and infused with drugs on those channels, and by imposing heavy penalties including mandatory jail term for those involved.' Harm reduction is the way to go In a related development, MVA also stressed that the use of vape products should not be confused with drug use as data has shown that countries embracing harm reduction like Sweden, the UK and New Zealand are seeing record drops in smoking rates. 'Research from leading health authorities confirms vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking in addition to be more effective than traditional nicotine replacement therapies,' observed Khairil. 'However, banning risks pushing people back to cigarettes. As the evidence mounts, it's impossible to ignore the transformation that harm reduction has brought to public health.' In Sweden, for example, the widespread use of less harmful nicotine products has nearly eliminated smoking while New Zealand is on the path to a smoke-free future. 'The data is clear: when adults have access to regulated vaping products, smoking rates fall faster, more lives are saved and health inequalities are reduced. Yet, too often, these success stories are left out of the any conversation,' lamented Khairil.
