For a true cricket fan, understanding the game goes beyond just watching matches—it's about appreciating the tactics, the history, the artistry of captaincy, and the personal journeys of legendary players. Whether you're fascinated by the science behind pitch conditions, the psychology of leadership, or the cultural impact of the sport, these five books offer deep insights into cricket's rich legacy.
Beyond A Boundary – by Cyril Lionel Robert James
A timeless classic, Beyond a Boundary explores cricket's profound influence on society, particularly during the colonial era. The book intertwines the author's personal connection with West Indian legends such as George John and Wilton St Hill, while posing a thought-provoking question: 'what do they know of cricket who only cricket know?' More than just a sports memoir, it's a reflection on race, politics, and identity through the lens of the game.
AB The Autobiography – by Abraham Benjamin de Villiers
The book is an autobiography of the South African legend Abraham Benjamin DeVillers, popularly known as ABD. DeVillers had represented the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Indian Premier League. The book aims to speak about ABD's journey on the verge of becoming a cricketer. It speaks about his early days as a cricketer apart from that, the book also aims to speak about his inspiration from India too. Jonty Rhodes, legendary South African fielder, writes the foreword. The book also conveys ABD's relation with his fellow teammates Virat Kohli, Faf Du Plessis and others.
Cricket Grounds of the World – The Times Network
This visually stunning book takes readers on a global tour of cricket's most iconic stadiums—from the hallowed Lord's Cricket Ground to Kolkata's roaring Eden Gardens and the picturesque Adelaide Oval. Packed with breathtaking photographs, historical anecdotes, and key statistics, it celebrates the architectural and emotional significance of these legendary venues. A must-have for fans who cherish the sport's heritage.
The Art of Captaincy – by Mike Brearley
Regarded as one of cricket's sharpest minds, former England captain Mike Brearley dissects the nuances of leadership in The Art of Captaincy. Drawing from his experience in the historic 1981 Ashes victory, Brearley breaks down tactical decision-making, man-management, and the psychological battles that define great captains. This book is an essential guide for aspiring leaders, both on and off the field.
The Commonwealth of Cricket – Ramachandra Guha
Historian and cricket aficionado Ramachandra Guha pens a heartfelt tribute to the sport in The Commonwealth of Cricket. Chronicling his lifelong passion—from childhood games in Dehradun to witnessing India's cricketing evolution—Guha blends personal nostalgia with sharp analysis. He also offers rare insights into the challenges faced by cricket administrators, making this a compelling read for fans who love the game's history and cultural impact.

Bengaluru stampede makes it clear—those managing IPL want the benefits without accountability

Strangely, all information regarding the victory parade came from RCB's marketing and revenue division. This is where the pettiness of a tournament like the IPL comes to the forefront. From a humanitarian point of view, it is difficult to understand the need for an instant celebratory roadshow. Usually, such events require careful planning—but not in this case. Most people consider the players, management, and franchise owners as the primary stakeholders of an IPL franchise. What often goes unnoticed are the marketing and promotion agencies operating behind the scenes. There is nothing legally or morally wrong in an agency promoting a team. The problem arises when such companies exert a vice-like grip on the image of the cricket franchise. Top IPL authorities, including the chairman, were quick to point out that the IPL Managing Committee and the BCCI had no role in the post-match celebrations of franchises. The Karnataka State Cricket Association also stated that it had no involvement in the roadshow organised to celebrate RCB's victory. The recent events following the 2025 Indian Premier League final must be viewed with greater sensitivity. It is important to mourn the loss of young lives—but even more important is to understand the causes behind the tragedy. Also read: IPL expansion will kill Test cricket. Players no longer care about playing for the country Promotion at all cost IPL franchises are in the grip of promotion agencies eager to instantly capitalise on the euphoria of a team's win. The economic agenda of these companies is driven purely by greed. They do not pause to consider the impact on the most important—and most powerless—stakeholder in Indian cricket: the fan. A desperate attempt was made to stage a hasty victory roadshow. It's not as if India is unaware of the dangers of crowd mismanagement and the risk of stampedes. What's sinister here is that the greed to capitalise on victory was so overpowering that even the potential loss of lives was ignored. There was absolutely no need for a rushed roadshow. The victory parade was announced without planning or consultation with local authorities or the police. The abuse of money power is evident—private charters were used to fly the victorious team back to their home city. It was a desperate, last-minute attempt to cash in on the moment in the most inhuman and insensitive way. The bitter truth about franchise cricket is that everything revolves around commerce. It's bizarre that the national anthem is played at a tournament that has nothing to do with the fortunes of cricketing nations. This, too, is the doing of marketing and promotion agencies whose sole aim is to boost the franchise's brand value. Also read: Here's why BCCI took IPL auction to Saudi Arabia—cricket is not the main course Ignoring the cricket fan The stampede in Bengaluru has made it clear: those managing the IPL want all the benefits without any accountability. No one wants to take responsibility for the tragic deaths of young, innocent cricket fans. The IPL is a mega-rich tournament, and there is enough money inside the BCCI's wallet. Yet the value of a die-hard cricket fan's life is pegged at just Rs 10 lakh. This shows how little the authorities value the biggest stakeholder in Indian cricket—the fan. It exposes how brutal and insensitive both the state and cricketing authorities have become toward those who support the game most passionately. Instead of recognising the sinister role of marketing agencies, the authorities respond with routine monetary compensation. Every tragedy is a chance to learn. This one should serve as an eye-opener for Indian cricket fans. Euphoria must not drive them into a frenzy. It's unlikely that celebrity cricketers or franchise owners will visit the homes of those who died. The emotions that fans display for franchises are not reciprocated. The real villains are those who exploit every opportunity to enhance commercial brand value. These are the people who insisted on a hasty celebration and emotionally manipulated millions of RCB fans, packing them into a 40,000-capacity stadium without proper preparation or planning. (PTI) Karnataka State Cricket Association secrteary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam have resigned from their posts in the aftermath of the stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 that claimed 11 lives and injured 75 people. Lakhs of people had congregated to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL title a night before. "This is to inform that due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days and though our role was very limited, but owing moral responsibility, we wish to state that last night we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, by way of a letter dated 06.06.2025 to the President of Karnataka State Cricket Association," said Shankar and Jairam in a press release on Saturday. In their plea in court, KSCA's committee had stated: "There is no wrong that can be attributed to the committee or its office-bearers as they stand aloof of any liabilities against the entire unfortunate incident…" They also stated that the stadium is managed by RCB since the IPL franchise had rented the premises. The KSCA stated that the concerned company would "make necessary arrangements" for the event. "On behalf of the M/s DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited, KSCA requests to inform that after the TATA IPL 2025 Finals on 3rd June 2025, in case Royal Challengers Bengaluru wins the IPL 2025 title, M/s DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited shall make plans for the felicitation ceremony at the Vidhana Soudha Grand Steps," KSCA stated in the letter. "KSCA requests that M/s DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited shall be permitted to make necessary arrangements at the Vidhana Soudha Grand Steps," the association further said in the letter addressed to the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms (DPAR) of the state government. While the felicitation ceremony at the Vidhan Soudha passed off without any major glitch, chaos happened outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium where lakhs converged following RCB's social media invitation, despite inadequate planning and organisation. That post has since been deleted. A planned victory parade, on an open top bus, had to be cancelled but the function inside the stadium proceeded despite the tragedy that unfolded outside. KSCA puts blame squarely on RCB, DNA Complaint Filed Against Virat Kohli Over Bengaluru Stampede | RCB | IPL | Karnataka The KSCA pleaded in Court that there is "absolutely no wrong that can be attributed to the Petitioner Committee or its office bearers as they stand aloof of any liabilities against the entire unfortunate incident." "IPL events are conducted by RCB through their service provider M/S DNA network private limited and the role of KSCA is very limited as it accommodates by extending the venue and infrastructure," the body stated in its writ petition. "KCSA facilitates government permissions. The management of gates is the responsibility of RCB Franchise /DNA who execute under the direction of the police. "The police have registered the FIR under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry by naming the petitioner/members of KSCA as accused," it added. Justice SR Krishna Kumar, who heard the petition seeking to quash the FIR against the KSCA office-bearers, restrained the police from taking any coercive action against the officials until the next hearing (June 16). (Pic credit: PTI) It has now been three days since tragedy struck Bengaluru and innocent lives were lost due to the chaos. RCB have issued statements, announced monetary compensation for the families of the deceased 11 individuals and setup a 'RCB Cares' fund for the injured fans. Yet, the parent company behind RCB, Diageo, have remained quiet . As reported, we've sent a specific set of questions to Diageo on the stampede. The queries ask for their reaction on the incident, why they've been quiet, whether they were satisfied with the arrangements and whether this has soured the victory celebrations. As things stand, the company has not responded. Meanwhile, RCB's marketing head Nikhil Sosale has been sent to judicial custody until June 19. He, and three other DNA Event Management Company staffers, was arrested in the early hours of Friday at the airport.
