Port manager remanded for allegedly deceiving firm, causing RM1mil losses
The suspect was brought before the magistrates' court in Putrajaya this morning for a remand order.
PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a woman for allegedly deceiving a company shareholder over a dredging project at Bagan Datuk Port in Perak.
The magistrates' court in Putrajaya this morning issued a remand order for the suspect, a port manager in her 40s, for four days until May 11.
A source from MACC said the woman was arrested at around 6.15pm yesterday when she was at the anti-graft agency's headquarters in Putrajaya to provide her statement.
The source added that the suspect is believed to have misled the shareholder regarding the project to claim an inflated amount for the work through another company.
'She is suspected of causing the (shareholder's) company to suffer losses amounting to RM1 million,' the source said.
MACC senior director of investigations Zainul Darus confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.

Ringgit dips slightly to 4.2270 against US dollar as trade closes ahead of Aidiladha weekend
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — The ringgit closed marginally lower against the US dollar on Friday, amid a stronger US Dollar Index (DXY) as traders await US Nonfarm Payroll (NFP) data tonight, said an analyst. At 6 pm, the local note stood at 4.2270/2360 against the greenback, easing from Thursday's close of 4.2245/2295. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the DXY gained 0.14 per cent to 98.884 points as the markets await the NFP data tonight, expecting payrolls to increase by 126,000 in May, down from 177,000 in the previous month. 'The ringgit versus the US dollar exchange oscillates around RM4.22 to RM4.23 today. Compared to yesterday, the ringgit depreciated slightly by 0.09 per cent to RM4.2310. 'This week, the ringgit has performed well as it has gained 0.7 per cent,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said as US-China tariff tensions subside and foreign capital continues to flow into Malaysian debt and foreign exchange deposits, the ringgit is gaining stronger structural support. 'Foreign investor interest remains strong, suggesting that any ringgit weakness driven by the US dollar is likely to attract buyers swiftly,' he said. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9324/9390 from Thursday's 2.9495/9531 and appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7212/7334 from 5.7301/7369. However, the ringgit eased vis-a-vis the euro to 4.8268/8371 from 4.8235/8292. The local currency also traded mostly higher against most of its ASEAN peers. It edged higher versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2862/2934 from 3.2881/2922, gained against the Thai baht to 12.9599/9947 from 12.9925/13.0138 and inched up vis-a-vis the Philippine peso to 7.58/7.60 from 7.59/7.61. MACC seizes RM143m asset from highway concessionaire Tan Sri with luxury u/ground wine cellar
THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed late last night (June 3) of having seized assets worth RM143 mil from a 'Tan Sri highway concessionaire in the Klang Valley' linked to the misuse of sukuk funds during an operation conducted last week. The seizures include 14 individual accounts totalling RM4.5 mil, eight company accounts totalling RM33 mil, luxury condominium and land worth RM24.5 mil, nine cars worth RM7.65 mil and 13 cars that have yet to be handed over to the investigation team, according to the graft buster's chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. Other items seized include luxury watches worth RM25 mil, handbags (RM3 mil), jewellery and diamonds (RM6 million), four horses (RM400,000), alcoholic beverages (RM3 mil), foreign assets worth more than RM15 million and around RM20 mil in gambling activities. 'Preliminary investigations detected misconduct between 2016 and 2020 involving approved sukuk funds of about RM1.35 bil with false claims of about RM360 mil and RM416 mil as well as RM50 mil in other bank facility loans,' he revealed in a statement. 'The RM1.67 bil highway project also failed to be completed according to schedule and investigations are focused on bribes worth RM12 mil paid to certain parties as inducement in facilitating the cash flow out and back to the suspect. 'Proceeds of the embezzled funds were believed to be used in money laundering activities.' Tan Sri suspect currently hospitalised Azam further stated that the parties involved were believed to have used professionals such as auditors, financial experts, engineers and shell companies as recipients of the money in a layered manner to embezzle the funds. 'Until now, the MACC has yet to take the Tan Sri's statement as he is still warded in a private hospital whereby the investigating officer will seek confirmation today (June 3) from the doctor on the Tan Sri's health status before recording his statement,' he revealed. 'Meanwhile, the number of witness statements stands at 45 whereby those whose statements had been previously recorded have been called back to provide further evidence.' Meanwhile, Azam also explained that the investigation team is also tracking down luxury vehicles and properties belonging to the Tan Sri, both domestically and abroad, including in London and Switzerland. Additionally, he said current investigation is also focused on the true value of luxury alcoholic beverages in the Tan Sri's possession with the possibility that the money has been transferred to other accounts.
