New Delhi: Ever since the twin tragedies struck Japan on 6 and 9 August, 1945 in the form of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the island nation never went for the development of weapons and military systems on a large scale. Instead, it focused on experimenting and developing new and better technologies for the benefit of humanity. It worked quietly on building new, improved infrastructure which the world swears by. DSEI Japan 2025
With the rapid and strategic changes in the geopolitics and equation around the world, Japan is now out with 'DSEI Japan'. DSEI Japan is the only large-scale, fully integrated defence event to take place in Japan, providing unprecedented levels of access into the Japanese and wider Asia-Pacific market.
It was held at Makuhari Messe, Chiba from 21-23 May 2025 and attracted 471 firms from 33 countries, including 169 from Japan alone. Japan's revolutionary railgun
It is here that Tokyo exhibited its trailblazing railgun. The railgun weapon was considered unfeasible and impossible to achieve even by the mighty United States.
But before delving into the USA-Japan story, let's tell you that at DSEI, Japan exhibited high-powered lasers, missiles, drones, trainer jets, and many other new defense platforms. This surely makes one wonder if the country has radically changed its defence policies with North Korea and China as its neighbours? Futuristic weapon
The main attraction at the expo that created a lot of curiosity and interest is the 'futuristic railgun' that its makers believe can even shoot down hypersonic missiles. The railgun was test-fired by the Japanese Navy for the first time last year and Tokyo released a few images in April. DSEI was perhaps the first public display of the gun.
In fact, railgun, though described as futuristic, was conceptualised during the 1920s, and many countries, including China, France, Germany, and India, have tried building one. The USA, arguably the most powerful military in the world, tried its luck at this weapon but abandoned its plans in 2021 after encountering multiple tech hurdles. But look here, Japan turned it upside down and Tokyo succeeded, where Washington failed. The Chinese connection
We cannot leave behind China. While America halted its mission, China and Japan continued the work on railguns and in February last year, China claimed a breakthrough.
Feng Junhong-led team and the National Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Energy at the Naval University of Engineering published a paper in the Journal of the Naval University of Engineering in November. The team claimed that its research resulted in the metal shell fired from a railgun receiving stable signals from the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) developed and operated by China. The BeiDou consistently adjusted its flight path, maintaining an error of less than 15 meters (49 feet) 'until it hits its target.'
'Achieving such high accuracy at such high speeds is not easy, as the shell can travel 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) per second,' the report added. Unique antenna created by Chinese engineers
Chinese engineers created a unique antenna that can resist intense electromagnetic radiation and receive clear signals from the BeiDou constellation's military frequency band.
As for Japan, it started working on the railgun project in 2016. It has till date invested US$300 million and a prototype of the weapon is already undergoing trials aboard a Maritime Self-Defense Force test vessel.
Analysts privy to the project and those present at the exposition are unanimous in their conviction that Tokyo's public unveiling of the railgun at the 2025 DSEI Japan shows that the country is confident in its technology and product reliability. How railguns work
Even though the concept is about 100 years old and the world's top military power failed to realise its dream, the basic science behind railguns is quite simple. Railguns are guns but unlike conventional guns they don't use gunpowder. They use electricity and magnetism to launch projectiles at hypersonic speed. Let's go back to our school Physics classes
A railgun has two parallel metal rails connected to a power source which are placed close together, with a conductive projectile (often a metal ball) between them. When the railgun is activated, a massive electric current flows through one rail, across the projectile, and back through the other rail, creating a complete circuit. This huge current generates a powerful magnetic field around the rails. According to a principle called the Lorentz force, when electricity flows through a conductor (the projectile) in a magnetic field, it creates a force that pushes the projectile forward at hypersonic speed, often exceeding Mach 5 (6174 kmph).
A railgun uses an electromagnetic field to thrust the projectile forward to its target at incredibly high speed, Mach 5 (6174 kmph) which provides it with enough kinetic energy to destroy any potential target. They can reach a monstrous speed of Mach 8.8 (10866.2 kmph). Usually, the projectile could be any metal ball without any explosives. Due to the mind-blowing volume of kinetic energy used for the push, it has been compared to a meteor hitting the Earth.
Put simply, a railgun converts electromagnetic energy into kinetic energy and uses that kinetic energy to destroy a target which could be a fighter jet, missile, drone, or ship.

How this $7,000 EV is said to be busting the 'biggest' myth about cars in Japan

A Japanese startup, KG Motors , is aiming to boost Japan's electric vehicle (EV) market with an ultra-compact, affordable one-seater EV called the mibot, according to Bloomberg. Resembling a futuristic golf cart, the mibot is designed for Japan's narrow streets and has already pre-sold over half of the 3,300 units planned for delivery in 2027. This puts KG Motors on track to surpass Toyota, which sold around 2,000 EVs in Japan in 2024. This reportedly puts KG Motors on track to sell more EVs in Japan than the world's biggest automaker, Toyota Motor Corp., which shifted around such 2,000 vehicles in all of 2024. In a country where EVs are still a rare sight, KG Motors is trying to bust a burgeoning myth: That Bigger is Better. 'Cars are simply too big,' said Kazunari Kusunoki, KG Motors' founder and CEO, as quoted by Bloomberg. The mibot, priced at ¥1 million ($7,000) before tax, is half the cost of Japan's popular Nissan Sakura EV. It offers a 100-kilometer range, a five-hour charge time, and a top speed of 60 km/h. Production is set to begin in October at a new factory east of Hiroshima. Japan's EV market lags globally, with EVs making up just 3.5per cent of vehicle sales in 2023 compared to the global average of 18%, per BloombergNEF. Toyota's multi-pathway approach, favoring hybrids alongside EVs, has shaped public skepticism about EVs' popularity, Kusunoki noted. However, small kei cars like the Sakura, which sold nearly 23,000 units in 2024, dominate Japan's EV market. KG Motors' mibot, with its minimalist design and low production costs, targets rural areas with declining public transport. Bloomberg reports that 95per cent of the 2,250 pre-orders come from homeowners with at least one vehicle. The startup expects to break even on its second batch of 3,000 units and aims to produce 10,000 annually thereafter.

Elon Musk secretly had baby with Japanese pop star, ex alleges amid heavy ketamine abuse claims

Elon Musk's decision to end his political stint was surprising, given how hard he campaigned for Donald Trump during the 47th presidential election, and the formation for DOGE. Recently, a bombshell report from the New York Times made several wild claims about the Tesla owner's personal life, including drug use, secret kids, and attempts to silence the women in his life. Not long ago, Ashley St. Clair, a conservative writer who claimed that Musk had a child with her and then abandoned both, told the publication about others, too, including one with a Japanese pop star. Musk has long been vocal about having more kids, believing declining birth rates are a threat to civilisation and that people should fear childlessness more than pregnancy. So far, he's publicly confirmed 14 kids. But according to ex Ashley, the billionaire once told her he 'had fathered children around the world, including one with a Japanese pop star' (though no names were dropped). One excerpt from the article reads: 'He said he would be willing to give his sperm to anyone who wanted to have a child.' Ashley said he made it sound like a noble mission, like he was doing the world a favour by helping people have kids and save humanity. Also read: 'Go ahead, punch me in the face': Elon Musk reveals the culprit behind his black eye Then in September, Ashley announced she was having his child. Musk, meanwhile, messaged her on Signal, the disappearing chat app, allegedly asking her to keep both the baby and their relationship under wraps. At first, he denied being the father, but then reportedly offered her $15 million upfront plus $100,000 per month until the child turned 21, if she agreed to stay silent. She turned it down, went public, and took it to court. The paternity test revealed a 99.9999% match. Musk is the father of Romulus. In the last 20 years and across three failed marriages and relationships, the 53-year-old has fathered 14 kids. With his first wife, Canadian author Justine Wilson, he welcomed five children in 2002—Vivian, Griffin, Kai, Saxon, and Damian. He divorced her in 2008. In 2020, Musk was confirmed to be dating singer Grimes. The two had kids—X Æ A-12, a girl named Exa Dark Sideræl, and a boy, Techno Mechanicus. That relationship ended on a messy note with a court custody battle. It was later confirmed that before Grimes' second child arrived, Musk had secretly fathered twins Strider and Azure with Shivon Zilis, an executive at his company Neuralink. The two later had another child, Arcadia, in February 2024. Also read: Trump calls Elon Musk 'terrific' ahead of billionaire's final day in office, announces press conference with him According to The New York Times, Musk, who became the biggest campaign donor for the Republican Party by donating nearly $275 million and showing up at key swing states, jumping and excitedly campaigning for President Trump, also relied heavily on drug usage. Sources told the Times that Elon used ketamine heavily (so much that it affected his bladder), along with ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms. There are no confirmed sources to claim whether Musk used these substances during White House meetings or while he was heading DOGE, but people around him noticed his behaviour got more erratic, pitching his own people for cabinet, insulting congressmen, making Nazi-like gestures, and so on.
