
Six government colleges in Coimbatore district have intake limit of 3,967 seats for first year UG programmes
The intake limit in Government Arts College (Autonomous), Coimbatore, is the highest among the government institutions in the category with a capacity to admit 1,727 students.
Including the eight additional courses sanctioned in shift II, the college will be offering 23 UG programmes in both shift 1 and 11, from 2025-26, Principal M.R. Yezhili said.
Since admission will entirely be based on score in Plus Two and as per Tamil Nadu Government communal reservation system, students are advised to choose more number of courses while applying, Prof. Yezhili aid.
The other government colleges are in Mettupalayam (intake of 480), Valparai (520), Puliakulam (410), Thondamuthur (410), and Pollachi (420).
The students admitted in government colleges are exempted from paying tuition fee. Those among the students in government and government-aided colleges who had undergone their schooling in government schools from levels VI to XII are entitled to monthly assistance of ₹1,000 (Under Pudhumai Pen scheme for girls and Tamil Pudhalvan scheme for boys).
Students get trained in skills for securing jobs, and are provided with other educational assistance schemes of the government, free bus pass, District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar said in a press release.
Students could download their application from the website: www.tngasa.in from May 7 to 27, the press release said.
Admission facilitation centres have also been established in the government colleges.
Application fee of ₹48 and registration fee of ₹2 could be remitted through debit card/credit card/net banking/ UPI.

TIRUCHY: Government arts and science colleges in Tiruchy have witnessed a record surge in applications for UG courses for academic year 2025-2026, with over 1.9 lakh students vying for limited seats across five institutions. On Monday, the first day of admission counselling, Tamil, Computer Science, and Commerce emerged as the sought-after courses, reflecting a shift in student aspirations shaped by government job dreams and job-oriented training programmes. The Thanthai Periyar Government Arts and Science College received 1,00,617 applications for just 1,600 seats, which is a steep 15% increase from last year's 87,534, and nearly double from 54,004 applications received in 2023. This year, a maximum of 9,301 students applied for admission to Tamil. Computer Science and Commerce received 8,231 and 8,130 applications respectively. In Thiruverumbur's Government Arts College, a similar pattern is evident. At Srirangam Government Arts and Science College, the trend tilts toward career-focused streams. The college has only 470 seats, making competition stiff. The Government Arts and Science College in Kumulur, Lalgudi Taluk, has also seen applications rise from 11,000 last year to 18,642 this year.

UG admission commences in Govt. Arts and Science College (autonomous), Coimbatore; 33,753 candidates apply for 1,727 seats
Admission for UG programmes commenced on Monday at the Government Arts College (Autonomous), Coimbatore, the second-most preferred college in the category next only to the Presidency College in Chennai. There are as many as 33,753 applicants for 1,727 seats in 23 UG courses in both shift I and II. Though the number of applicants is lesser when compared to last year's 36,000-plus aspirants, the college retains its status as the second-most preferred choice. The main demand is for computer and computer-based courses including Computer Science, Information Technology and Computer Applications, Principal M.R.R. Yezhili said. On Monday, admission counselling was carried out for special category candidates: Sports, NCC, Differently-abled, wards of Ex-servicemen, wards of security forces, and candidates from Andaman and Nicobar. Out of 150 vacancies under special category, 79 seats were filled. On June 4, the general counselling will be conducted for all subjects, except English and Tamil. Only top-ranked applicants with cut-off marks of 300 and above (Out of 400 in four main papers of Plus Two other than English and Tamil) have been called for the counselling. For B.A. programmes in Tamil and English, students who have scored above 75 in Tamil and 60 in English in Plus Two have been called for first counselling, the college has informed. Depending on vacancies that remain, the other students will be called for second counselling. The rank list and other details will be uploaded in the college website: Information regarding counselling and other details are being sent to the students through short message to their registered mobile number and through e-mail. The demand for admission at the Government Arts and Science College for Women at Puliakulam in the city is also high. There are 19,723 applicants for 410 seats in eight UG programmes. B.A. Tamil, B.A. English, Computer Science, and Mathematics are offered in shift 1, and B.A. Economics, and Computer Science in shift II. There are close to 3,000 applicants for the Computer Science programme in the two shifts.

Applications for arts and science colleges to be open till May 30
The Higher Education Department has extended the deadline to apply for arts and science colleges from May 27 to May 30. The Directorate of Collegiate Education will conduct online single-window counselling for 176 colleges under its purview. Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan announced on Tuesday that the extension was based on a request from aspirants. So far, 2,25,705 applicants have registered, and 1,84,762 candidates, including 1,08,619 girls, 76,065 boys, and 78 third gender students, have registered through the online portal ( The merit list for special category students will be released on May 29, and the one for general category students will be out on May 30. The list will be displayed on notice boards at all 176 arts and science colleges. The lists will also be available on the websites of the colleges. Further, candidates will be informed through email and SMS by the respective colleges. Counselling next month Counselling for special category candidates will be held on June 2 and 3. For the general category, counselling will commence on June 4 and end on June 14. Classes for all students will commence on June 30, Mr. Govi Chezhiaan said.
