PTI
Last Updated:
Washington, Aug 14 (AP) US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order meant to reduce and streamline regulations in an effort to make the US commercial space industry more competitive.
It calls for the creation of an 'Office of Space Commerce' within the Secretary of Transportation.
The order also seeks to 'enhance American greatness in space by enabling a competitive launch marketplace" that can 'substantially increase" commercial space activities in the next five years.
It directs authorities to ease requirements for commercial license and permit appeals for US-based space operators and to reduce or eliminate many environmental reviews. (AP) NPK NPK

Yogayatan knocks on NCLT's doors over lenders' decision to allow revised bids for Lavasa
Synopsis Yogayatan Group has filed a petition with the NCLT, opposing the lenders' decision to allow revised resolution plans for Lavasa Corp after Yogayatan emerged as the highest bidder. The company fears that Valor Estates' increased bid after the initial offers were opened could compromise the integrity and timeline of the CIRP process. Environmental issues and lack of crucial clearances by the government forced Lavasa's bankruptcy in 2018. Mumbai-based Yogayatan Group has filed a petition in the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) opposing creditors' move to allow revised resolution plans for taking over the debt-laden Lavasa reported by ET in its August 1 edition, Yogayatan had emerged as the highest bidder with its bid of Rs 795 crore on a net present value (NPV) basis after bidders had been given an opportunity to improve their offers after the first round of bidding last month. But after the bids were opened, Valor Estates, formerly DB Realty, which had not placed a revised bid, said it wanted to now increase its bid. The Mumbai-based company has offered to increase its bid to Rs 806 crore on an NPV this higher bid, lenders decided to give all bidders a chance to revise their resolution plans earlier this month. Yogayatan's NCLT plea is against this decision by managing director Ameya Pratap Singh confirmed his company's move in response to an ET query. "Yogayatan Group has approached the NCLT with the intention that the CIRP (corporate insolvency resolution process) of Lavasa is completed in a time-bound manner and the sanctity of the process is not vitiated to unfairly favour any party. For any bidder to offer to increase its bid after the financial offer of other bidders has been publicly disclosed is, in our opinion, dubious and legally untenable," Singh said in an email resolution professional Udayraj Patwardhan did not reply to an email seeking plea comes as lenders struggle to close the seven-year-old resolution process. Last year, lenders had to pull the plug on a Rs 1,814 crore plan approved in July 2023 from Darwin Platform Infrastructure (DPIL) after that company failed to pay its committed upfront amount in the specified have given bidders time till next week to revise their resolution issues and lack of crucial clearances by the government forced Lavasa's bankruptcy in 2018. Even at the highest bid, the total recovery is less than 13% of dues of over Rs 6,642 crore, after more than seven years of struggle. The new threat of litigation may delay resolution for India's first privately built and managed city.

‘Trump should end H-1B visa': Critics demand stricter rules to protect US jobs
The H-1B visa programme in the United States is under renewed criticism from those who say it pushes out American workers, drives down wages, and allows for exploitative labour conditions. Supporters of an 'America First' approach argue the programme, meant to fill real skill shortages, is now being used mainly to cut costs at the expense of local staff. Joseph Bovino says H-1B rules make workers vulnerable, as losing a job can mean losing legal status, pushing them into exploitative conditions.(Pexel) US immigration lawyer Joseph Bovino has called for reforms, noting that H-1B visa holders are tied to one employer and risk losing their legal status if their job ends early. Critics also say a large share of H-1B visas go to outsourcing firms, which they believe undermines the programme's original purpose of filling roles that require specialised skills. Bovino says H-1B used to replace US workers In a recent post on X, Bovino said the programme lets companies lay off US workers while hiring foreign staff at lower pay, contradicting claims that visas are only issued when no qualified Americans are available. He cited Microsoft as an example, saying it cut over 15,000 jobs while filing more than 14,000 H-1B applications for similar roles. Bovino also said the programme suppresses wages and ties foreign staff to a single employer. 'Workers on H-1B visas face a very short window, 60 days, to find a new sponsor if terminated, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation,' he said. He criticised outsourcing firms, particularly those from India, for dominating the visa allocations to supply cheaper labour for jobs that may not require advanced skills. Some firms, he claimed, even apply for non-existent jobs or keep staff 'on the bench,' a practice he says goes against the programme's purpose. Bovino suggested alternatives like investor and O-1 visas, which he said benefit applicants and the US economy without the problems linked to the H-1B. Internet reaction Reactions to his post were divided. Some agreed the visa slots should be fewer and more competitive, reserved for top talent. 'There needs to be very limited H-1B visa slots, and requestors need to compete against each other for who gets the visa. A few best of the best, and the rest need to improve themselves,' one user wrote. Another user chimed, 'H-1B employees should be laid off first at an absolute minimum. That said, I'm in favor of ending basically all visa work programs. If you want someone from another country, hire them in that country. However, even that should have an associated cost.' A different user wrote, 'But H1b were also laid off too, all those 15k are not all 'Americans'. It's a combination of Americans, Green card holders, H1b and OPT. A lot of folks on visas have returned back to their home countries. Why not look into the practices of these companies who can just fire during record profits? There should be rules against companies who laid off h1bs wanting to hire h1b. Simple.' Also Read: Indian H-1B visa holder shares quick, smooth renewal experience in Jamaica Another user penned, 'I think there should be a limit on H1B slots. There are way too many people coming in for that. We need to recruit people here. We need America first!' One of the other X users wrote, 'I am not sure about eliminating the program. However, it is definitely a mistake to give working visas to those who contribute NOTHING to the economy.'
