Land near fire-hit car park on King's Dock gets £300k revamp

BBC News5 hours ago
An area of land described as an "aesthetic blight" near the site of a major fire on King's Dock eight years ago is to be given a £300,000 revamp. On New Year's Eve 2017, the former multi-storey car park adjacent to the Arena and Convention Centre (ACC) Liverpool burnt down leading to the loss of more than 1,000 vehicles and the building's demolition. The area has been cordoned off with hoardings ever since.Liverpool City Council said it would now replace fencing and undertake landscaping works to make it available for use on event days.
The council has full freehold ownership of the site, with extensive developments undertaken in 2008 to provide leisure, residential and conference facilities including the M&S Bank Arena, Exhibition and Convention Centre, and almost 2,000 residential housing units and hotels.A council report described the land near the car park as an "aesthetic blight on the area".The hoardings currently fence off what the authority described as a key piece of public realm that ACC Liverpool could activate to support its wider developing events offer.
The work proposed would allow for water and power to support future events, visually improve the area and secure the space, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.An officer report said: "On the new landscaped area, ACC Liverpool will be responsible for the operations which will consist of a new food and beverage offer associated with both event and non-event days." Work is expected to be completed by 29 August.

Amazon offers 15-minute food and drink deliveries via GoPuff deal - has it launched in your area?

Amazon now offers 15-minute grocery deliveries in areas across Britain as part of a new partnership with US firm GoPuff. The US tech giant said shoppers can order thousands of grocery products, including fresh food and alcohol, for delivery from local 'micro-fulfilment centres'. Orders are available for arrival in under an hour and as fast as 15 minutes, available all day, every day, according to Amazon. Pennsylvania-based GoPuff was one of many ultra-fast grocery delivery companies that expanded quickly during the pandemic when lockdowns heightened consumer demand. Turkey-based rival Getir pulled out of the UK, Europe and the US last year after its finances came under pressure and it kickstarted a cost-cutting drive. Amazon's new UK offering follows an initial launch in May, with services rolled out to residents in Birmingham and Salford. The service is now available in Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Chessington, Coventry, Derby, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Salford, Sheffield and Swansea. It joins grocery retailers Morrisons and Iceland, which are available to Amazon's UK customers. The online share of UK food sales skyrocketed during the pandemic, but has since stabilised. Around 9 per cent of all food retail sales were made online as of December 2024, compared to a 2021 peak of 12 per cent, according to Statistica. Russell Jones, Amazon's director of grocery partnerships, said: 'We are always working to give customers more choice and more convenient options to have their groceries delivered. 'The new launch with GoPuff brings our customers access to a convenient and affordable way to access their everyday groceries.'

'Pretty surreal, not sure how it all happened, a survival fight. Incredible. I was in denial until the last pit stop. No mistakes, really happy.' 5.48pm CEST 17:48 Piastri shakes hands sportingly with Norris. The gap between them is eight points and the championhip is between them, it seems. Verstappen had another bad day. Hulkenberg is mobbed. 'Nico, Nico.' Mrs Norris is in tears. 'I love you so much, enjoy, enjoy,' she tells young Lando. 5.44pm CEST 17:44 'It's beautiful,' says a tearful Lando. 'Oh my god,' whimpers a sobbing Nico Hulkenberg He started 19th on the grid. Updated at 5.45pm CEST 5.43pm CEST 17:43 Verstappen makes it to fifth, passing Lance Stroll. Lando Norris, to cheers, gets it done for McLaren, Piastri in second and rueing the stewards. It's a 25th home win. And Hulkenberg lands his first podium. Huge celebrations at Sauber! Updated at 5.51pm CEST 5.40pm CEST 17:40 51/52 In his green Sauber, Hulkenberg is enjoying the race of his F1 life. He's won Le Mans before. 5.38pm CEST 17:38 50/52 Bright sun at Silverstone now. The rain a painful memory for some. Hulkenberg has 5.4 seconds on Hamilton. 5.36pm CEST 17:36 49/52 Norris has the fastest lap and seems set fair for a big win. He's steered clear of the drama of a highly dramatic race. 5.35pm CEST 17:35 48/52 Hulkenberg has been in 259 GPs. Hamilton had a wobble like Piastri and is struggling to close on his fellow veteran. 'No team orders, just race to the end,' McLaren tell Piastri. 5.34pm CEST 17:34 47/52 Leclerc is seen riding some gravel. He's had a shocker. Hamilton sets a fastest lap in search of his sixteenth podium at Silverstone. 5.32pm CEST 17:32 46/52 Piastri is asking for the McLaren drivers to be switched as he is innocent of the safety car accusation. Hulkenberg has the fastest lap…we're all on his side. He has seven seconds on Hamilton. 5.31pm CEST 17:31 45/52 Norris pits. And comes out. He has a lead of six seconds. The two McLarens can now race. Verstappen is swearing again, and isn't happy with his balance…Piastri almost loses it on his new tyres….. 5.29pm CEST 17:29 44/52 Norris in the lead, Piastri comes out in second. The two Haas car – Ocon and Bearman collide – but no safety car. Both Haas' slide in perfect symmetry. 5.27pm CEST 17:27 43/52 Hulkenberg holds third. Piastri is called in. 5.27pm CEST 17:27 42/52 Pitting time: Hamilton can't get past Hulkenberg and so comes in, the slicks it is. Verstappen comes in, too. Hamilton is struggling on these new tyres. Hulkenberg pits – and it's too slow – such a shame. 5.25pm CEST 17:25 41/52 Verstappen past Gasly and into sixth. Piastri is told not to be too silly if Norris comes close to him. 5.23pm CEST 17:23 40/52 George Russell spins and into the gravel – that's the slicks shown up to be not up to the job. Thankfully he's able to continue but a pit and a spin means he's in 14th. Alonso also struggling on slicks. 5.21pm CEST 17:21 39/52 Verstappen is in eighth, his lack of downforce – a 'tea tray', as Christian Horner called it – presents a problem. 5.20pm CEST 17:20 38/52 Quicker from Piastri, and he opens his lead on Norris. Alonso plays guinea pigs as he comes in to change to dry tyres. Russell and Mercedes will take that action – they go to the slicks. 5.18pm CEST 17:18 37/52 Norris has the fastest lap. The race is McLaren's but which of their cars? Piastri has the choice of going into the pits or having 10 seconds chalked off. 5.16pm CEST 17:16 36/52 Hamilton is enjoying the dry and Hulkenberg's quest for a podium place is to be denied by the Ferrari's straight-line speed. Updated at 5.23pm CEST 5.14pm CEST 17:14 35/52 Hulkenberg blazes past Stroll, who soon has Hamilton for company. The old master chases a podium place. Verstappen finally overtakes Sainz. 5.12pm CEST 17:12 34/52 Verstappen is stuck behind Sainz in 10th. This is desperate for him. 5.11pm CEST 17:11 33/52 Russell is chasing Gasly as he seeks to chase old teammate Hamilton. 5.10pm CEST 17:10 32/52 Piastri: 'It's drying but slowly, too soon for slicks.' 5.09pm CEST 17:09 31/52 Hulkenberg gives chase to Stroll, and third is in sight for the Sauber. Stroll says the track is starting to dry. Norris and Piastri look set for a battle at the front. It's Norris's to lose. 5.06pm CEST 17:06 30/52 Hamilton has finally overtaken Gasly for fifth. Hulkenberg, in fourth, has never been on the podium. We are willing him on. 5.04pm CEST 17:04 29/52 Piastri and Norris are 3.6 seconds apart. It's over 15 seconds to Stroll. 5.03pm CEST 17:03 28/52 Hamilton and Gasly really going at it. Great racing. 5.02pm CEST 17:02 27/52 Hamilton goes after Gasly – his old mate – and the Frenchman has more battery, and is using it to defend himself. 'So slow,' complains Verstappen of a car in deep traffic. 5.00pm CEST 17:00 26/52 Zak Brown of McLaren confirms that an appeal has gone in. Hamilton has overtaken Russell. These are his conditions. Discussions on the 10-second penalty within the McLaren pit. 4.57pm CEST 16:57 25/52 That's his punishment for his jiggery pokery behind the safety car. He's 10 seconds clear of Stroll, and 3.6 on Norris who is de facto leader. Verstappen is way back in 10th. Updated at 5.24pm CEST 4.56pm CEST 16:56 24/52 The McLarens are flying – three seconds per lap ahead of the rest. Could a penaly for Piastri hand it over to Norris? Russell and Hamilton do battle, the Ferrari comes wide, and Russell holds the line to go through. Antonelli has retired by the way. 4.54pm CEST 16:54 23/52 Piastri is under investigation for messing around by the safety car. Norris is second, Stroll is third, Hulkenberg fourth, Gasly fifth, Hamilton sixth. 4.52pm CEST 16:52 22/52 Just as the safety car departed, Verstappen spins off, Piastri and him were jousting. He's down in 10th. And then spins wide again, and is in 11th, before going past Ocon again. Did Piastri cause that? 'Whoa, mate! He just suddenly slows down.' Piastri in lumber? Verstappen was lucky not to get in a smash there. Updated at 5.00pm CEST 4.49pm CEST 16:49 21/52 'This puddle at turn two is a problem,' says Piastri. Does a red flag result? Antonelli comes in for a tyre change. His diffuser has gone after that Hadjar crash. Bits are coming off his car. Will he complete? No rear downforce. 4.47pm CEST 16:47 20/52 More safety car 'action', with plenty of spray. 4.44pm CEST 16:44 19/52 Hadjar smashes into the back of Antonelli. 'From out of nowhere, man,' says Hadjar. Hamilton is complaining he can't see anything. 4.43pm CEST 16:43 18/52 The spray is huge as they race. Russell overtakes Hamilton, and Ocon drops two places to ninth. Nobody can see much, surely. Piastri opens up a two-second lead on Verstappen as Norris closes – and Isack Hadjar crashes out. Oof, that was some prang, he's into the stands. Another safety car. 4.39pm CEST 16:39 17/52 Verstappen and Piastri jousting behind the safety car. George Russell asks why the race hasn't been stopped. The safety car is set to be removed, and we are going to race once more. 4.37pm CEST 16:37 16/52 Alonso, in 10th, is complaining about tyres and the pre-race change he made, as Lance Stroll is in fourth in the Aston Martin car.

Mums race to Asda to bag ‘insane bargains' on kids' clothes scanning for £2 and ‘saving £50 on summer hols stuff

MUMS are rushing online after spotting a massive 'glitch' on the Asda George site and they're snapping up kids' clothes for as little as £2. Savvy shoppers have flooded social media to share their hauls, revealing they've saved a fortune on summer bits for their little ones just in time for the school holidays. 2 One excited mum took to Facebook to post about the hidden savings, writing: "Insane bargains at Asda George! "Had all these sleepsuits in my basket on sale at £6 each. Went to re-look at the sale and all but one had gone down to £3. "Listed low to high and everything shows in its original sale price so must be a glitch.' And other parents were all over it. One claimed they were already stocking up for their newborn, she said: 'Thank you, I got some bargains for my baby due in August.' Another raved: 'Saved over £50 for my son's holiday stuff, love it!' A third added: 'Placed an order and managed to get a few bits, thanks.' Another mum said she bagged a 5-pack of shorts for just £2, which she called 'perfect for little ones on summer holiday'. And the best part is the mega deals are available online but you'll have to be quick, as stock is flying out. Delivery fees vary depending on your chosen slot, with standard delivery starting from £2.95 and named day or next day options from £4.50. Kat Farmer's new George at Asda Collection The buzz comes just weeks after Asda launched its first-ever stand-alone George store in Leeds, which could be rolled out nationwide if it proves a hit. The new store, which opened on Saturday, May 10, in the old Asda Living unit at Crown Point Retail Park, is a dream come true for George fans. It's packed with affordable fashion, stylish homeware, must-have toys, and adorable baby gear, plus a brand new café to keep you fuelled mid-shop. There are currently 30 Asda Living stores in the UK, but the supermarket giant is testing the waters with this new George-only concept. Bosses are expected to make a decision later this year on whether more will launch across the country. The George brand, first launched in 1989 by fashion guru George Davies, changed the game as the UK's first supermarket clothing label. By 2004, it had become the nation's biggest clothing retailer, and today it's still going strong, racking up 260 million visits a year to its site and stocking shelves in 560 stores. How to save at Asda Shop the budget range Savvy shopper Eilish Stout-Cairns recommends that shoppers grab items from Asda's Just Essentials range. She said: " Asda's budget range is easy to spot as it's bright yellow! Keep your eyes peeled for yellow and you'll find their Just Essentials range. "It's great value and I've found it has a much wider selection of budget items compared to other supermarkets. Sign up to Asda Rewards The savvy-saver also presses on the importance of signing up to Asda's reward scheme. She said: "Asda Rewards is free to join and if you shop at Asda you should absolutely sign up. "As an Asda Rewards member, you'll get exclusive discounts and offers, and you'll also be able to earn 10% cashback on Star Products. "This will go straight into your cashpot, and once you've earned at least £1, you can transfer the money in your cashpot into ASDA vouchers. We've previously rounded up the best supermarket loyalty schemes - including the ones that will save you the most money. Eilish always suggests that shoppers looking to buy booze look out for bargain deals. She said: "Asda often has an alcohol offer on: buy six bottles and save 25%. "The offer includes selected bottles with red, white and rose options, as well as prosecco. There are usually lots of popular bottles included, for example, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot and Freixenet Prosecco D.O.C. "Obviously, the more expensive the bottles you choose, the more you save." Join Facebook groups The savvy saver also recommends that fans of Asda join Facebook groups to keep in the know about the latest bargains in-store. Eilish said: "I recommend joining the Latest Deals Facebook Group to find out about the latest deals and new launches in store. "Every day, more than 250,000 deal hunters share their latest bargain finds and new releases. "For example, recently a member shared a picture of Asda's new Barbie range spotted in store. "Another member shared the bargain outdoor plants she picked up, including roses for 47p, blackcurrant bushes for 14p and topiary trees for 14p."
