Middlesex pull off record chase in One Day Cup
Robson run spree eclipses Durham
Durham made the worst possible start against Middlesex as Emilio Gay - who made an unbeaten 119 against Kent in their previous game - was bowled for a duck by Toby Roland-Jones' second ball. But Will Rhodes (63) added 141 with Lees, who carried his bat through the innings, collecting two sixes and 14 fours, while Bedingham raced to his century from just 65 deliveries and Colin Ackermann weighed in with 53 off 27.After losing an early wicket in reply, Robson and Josh de Caires put on 120 for Middlesex, with de Caires caught behind from a reverse sweep for 63 after bringing up his 50 from 38 balls. But Robson found more reliable support from Jack Davies (61), adding 114 in tandem, and from needing 170 off 20 overs, they brought the target down to just 41 from six. It was fitting that Robson hit the winning runs, whipping Cody Yusuf away for four as they eclipsed Worcestershire's 380-4 to beat Leicestershire in 2018.The record list A run chase is 399 by Queensland against Tasmania at Sydney in October 2014.
Warwickshire were given an excellent start against Kent as Ed Barnard (60) and Rob Yates put on 97 in 13 overs for the first wicket. And although Jayden Denly took two wickets in successive overs and Grant Stewart picked up 2-33, they reached 283-9, thanks largely to a 79-run stand between Kai Smith, who reached 50 off 59 balls, and made 58 and Vansh Jani (42).Barnard took two wickets as Kent slumped to 19-3 in reply, but Denly (52) and Harry Finch (50) put on 91 before Finch became debutant Adam Sylvester's first victim, caught off a leading edge, and Ali ran through the lower order for his second successive five-for in the competition.
Career-best figures for Allison
At New Road, Allison produced the best List A performance of his career, surpassing his previous best 50-over figures of 2-33 as Worcestershire bowled out Hampshire for 194 in the 42nd over despite 60 by opener Nick Gubbins.Allison took a stunning one-handed return catch, diving to his left to send back Tom Prest for 36, and Hampshire's hopes of a decent total were further dented when Joe Weatherley retired hurt after a blow on the hand.Brett D'Oliveira scored 52 at the top of the order in Worcestershire's reply and Ethan Brookes (35) produced an outrageous rolling ramp for six off Dom Kelly before they reached 196-5 when Matthew Waite pulled Gubbins for four at the start of the 41st over to end the game.Budinger was in brilliant form for Leicestershire, hitting three sixes and 13 fours as they totalled 333-8, adding 106 for the third wicket with Shan Masood, who made 50. Notts Outlaws needed something special to remove him and Joe Pocklington provided it with a brilliant over-the-shoulder diving catch on the boundary - and he also took 2-45 with the ball. The visitors were never really in the hunt despite 56 by Jack Haynes and they were bowled out for 209 in 38 overs as spin bowler Liam Trevaskis returned 5-52.
Meanwhile, Surrey's inexperienced attack had Glamorgan on 117-4 before Smale shared a stand of 70 and 86 with Zain ul-Hassan and Alex Horton, bringing up his maiden List A 100 off 97 balls as they added 91 from the final 10 overs of their innings. They made 308-7 and Surrey were 21.1 in the sixth over of their reply before rain forced an extended interruption. The teams returned at 17:40 BST with the home side given a revised target of 145 from 16 overs and Ben Foakes made 43 not out from just 17 balls as they made it to 146-5 with three balls remaining - despite an outstanding leap and one-handed catch by Kiran Carlson to dismiss Adam Thomas for 34.

Gary Lineker sends warning to his three Match of the Day successors - and admits he is unlikely to watch first show since his exit
Gary Lineker has sent a warning to his three successors as host of Match of the Day. Lineker has been replaced by a trio of presenters, with Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan to share hosting duties. According to Lineker, the fact that three individuals have been called upon for the job emphasises how much of a commitment it is. Lineker told Four Four Two: 'That's probably down to the fact it's a massive commitment. 'Those three have all got families, and if you're saying someone is going to do it for the next 10 or 20 years, then your weekends are gone. That might be it, I don't know. I didn't get involved in any of that. I take it as a compliment that they've named three, but I suspect it's not due to that.' Lineker has backed the trio to be hugely successful but admitted that he probably won't be watching the first show of the season live. He said: 'I haven't seen them yet to speak to them, but I will do – they'll be fine and they'll do a great job. I've known them all for years, they're top presenters. 'I'll be watching, but probably on iPlayer… I don't think I'll be watching on Saturday. Maybe the odd time, if I'm in.' Lineker first presented Match of the Day in 1999 as he replaced Des Lynam. In November last year it was announced that he would depart the show at the end of last season. Lineker had been due to be part of BBC's coverage of the 2026 World Cup but was axed in May after sharing a social media post which sparked an anti-Semitism row. Chapman will host this season's first edition of Match of the Day on Saturday night, with Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney as pundits. Cates, who has extensive experience of working for Sky Sports, confirmed that Lineker hadn't been in contact with any of the new presenters. 'No he hasn't got in touch and I haven't got in touch with him, but not because we're not avoiding each other,' Cates said as part of Sky Sports' launch of the new Premier League season. 'We just don't know each other. 'I know Gary to say hello to (but) we just don't know each other that well. And I think Chappers was saying that Gary said: 'Well, why would I tell three broadcasters how to do their job?' which is very lovely of him because he was brilliant at the job and adored. 'And as much as he was a controversial character at times, any focus group that was researching will tell you how much he was adored in that role. 'So I think from my point of view, the reason not to do it would be, I don't want to be Gary. I think there's a temptation to try and be someone else, and I think that you get a job because of yourself. 'And if then you try to be someone else, it can all just get a bit confused. I don't need another thing to think about. I don't need to be sitting there thinking: 'What would Gary do?' It's not a decision not to. It's just we don't have that relationship.'

Alan Shearer takes incredible swipe at Alexander Isak during Liverpool's season opener amid Newcastle transfer saga
ALAN SHEARER has taken an incredible swipe at Newcastle rebel Alexander Isak. The Toon ace has been pushing for a transfer away from the club this summer, and it is understood he will not take part in Newcastle 's season opener at Aston Villa. 4 4 Isak, 25, was the subject of a rejected £110million offer from Liverpool - with the St James' Park club wanting £150m to sell. However, having already splashed large sums on the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, Shearer took a dig at Isak after seeing the latter net the opener against Bournemouth. Ekitike had scored against Crystal Palace mere moments into his debut in the Community Shield, before also managing to score on his Anfield debut on Friday night. The Frenchman, who arrived on Merseyside for an initial £69m from Eintracht Frankfurt, took a pass from Alexis Mac Allister and nutmegged a Cherries defender before a lucky bounce put him through one-on-one and allowed him to slot home and open his Premier League account. It was the first goal of a thrilling encounter, which the Reds won 4-2 after two late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah saw off a Bournemouth comeback - although the occasion was plagued by alleged racist abuse by a fan directed towards Antoine Semenyo, with authorities ejecting the fan from the ground and saying they were investigating the incident. But Magpies legend Shearer took to social media during the game to take aim Isak. Shearer, 55, said: "Surely any forward thinking of going to Liverpool will be having second thoughts now having to play second fiddle to the brilliant Ekitike all season?" Isak, who scored 27 goals in all competitions last season, has been training alone away from his team-mates for the duration of his strike. Newcastle have continued to pay his £130,000-a-week wages, but SunSport understands disciplinary action is on the cards if he misses the club's opening game against Villa at 12:30pm today. The Swedish ace will be hit with a fine for missing a competitive game if he fails to show, but Isak and his agent, Vlado Lermic, are still not changing their stance as they continue to try and force his exit. The two sides to Isak's STRIKE story | Transfers Exposed Boss Eddie Howe has made it clear that he wants his top scorer back with the team, but he admits the future of the hotshot is out of his hands. Howe said on Friday: "I've said many times I want Alex to train and play. I've had those conversations with him." Pressed on when Isak might return to the squad, Howe shrugged: "I don't know. Alex will control that." Newcastle could hand competitive debuts to Aaron Ramsdale, Malick Thiaw and Anthony Elanga for the Villa Park clash. Howe confirmed Anthony Gordon and Sven Botman had shaken off pre-season knocks and were available to play, with only Joe Willock unfit for the game. Newcastle also remain in the hunt for a new hitman, with reports linking Brentford 's Yoane Wissa, Paris Saint-Germain's Goncalo Ramos and Manchester United 's Rasmus Hojlund with moves.

Ruben Amorim more confident in Man Utd ahead of new season
Ruben Amorim says he feels 'more confident' about Manchester United's qualities heading into Sunday's Premier League opener against Arsenal. A sense of optimism has returned to Old Trafford, just three months on from their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years being compounded by a damaging defeat in the Europa League final. Amorim has refreshed the squad, both in terms of personnel and mindset, since the end of a campaign in which the United head coach admitted he went into games knowing that they would struggle. But being backed in the transfer window over incomings and outgoings has helped changed that heading into Sunday's hotly-anticipated Old Trafford opener against Arsenal. 'It is hard to know (what we will deliver) because we cannot change everything in four weeks, but we are better,' Amorim said. 'I know that we are training harder, we are training better, so I know that we are more prepared to cope with the demands of the game. 'We have new players that we need to understand in the real game what they are capable to do in the moment. 'But I am really more confident. That is clear. I am more confident in this moment. 'But, again, we cannot change everything in four weeks but step by step we are going to be a better team, but of course I am more confident.' Benjamin Sesko is pushing to make his debut just a week on from joining the club from RB Leipzig, as are fellow summer acquisitions Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon. But there remains work to be done, with a number of players to shift out and a decision to be made on midfield after Brighton made clear they do not want to sell Carlos Baleba this summer. United are a work in progress but Amorim believes they are far better heading into the new campaign than the side that stumbled home 15th last term. 'We want to return to Europe, but it is hard as a Manchester United coach to say one thing like that,' he said. 'But we need to be realistic with our fans. We are going to have to fight a lot because there's a lot of good teams with more time than us together, but we are going to fight for it. 'We are going to improve. We want to focus game by game. If we are thinking now about how we are going to finish the season it is a problem. 'Let's focus on game by game. We want to win against Arsenal, that is the main focus.' The match against Mikel Arteta's Gunners pits Amorim against a striker he helped take to new heights. Viktor Gyokeres joined Sporting Lisbon from Coventry in 2023 and became one of Europe's most talked about frontmen in Europe under the Portuguese. There had been talk of a reunion with Amorim at Old Trafford but the Sweden international instead joined Arsenal and could make his debut against his former boss on Sunday. 'It's a different league,' Amorim said of Gyokeres. 'The physicality is different. 'In Sporting they have a very good group of scouting because they live from that, from the players they can buy and then sell to survive. 'I think he is a very good player. He is going to give different characteristics. 'It is going be different if we face in the beginning of the game Viktor or (Kai) Havertz, for example, so we need to be prepared for that but it's not a surprise to watch Viktor in a big club in England.'
