WATCH: Shocking moment football fans hurl punches in city centre brawl after match

Yahoo28-04-2025

This is the moment three football fans sparked an erruption in violence in the city centre following a cup tie.
A 24-year-old man has been jailed, and two others have been handed football banning orders, after violence erupted in Newport city centre following a match.
Samuel Grant, 24, Joseph Friel, 22, and Wayne Thomas, 18, all admitted to violent disorder and appeared for sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday, April 25.
All three have been sentenced for violent disorder as a result (Image: Gwent Police) They were each issued with five-year football banning orders, prohibiting them from attending Newport County matches, both home and away, regulated fixtures in Newport, and Wales national team games.
The court was told that the trouble began between a group of men in the city centre following Newport County's 1-1 draw with Eastleigh in January last year.
After the FA Cup third-round tie had finished, County fans clashed with supporters from Eastleigh outside a pub on Cambrian Road.
The violence continued, with further fighting on the same city centre street as Eastleigh's supporters headed towards the train station.
The violence first sparked outside a pub on Cambrian Road (Image: Gwent Police) Grant, from Newport, received a sentence of two years and four months.
Friel and Thomas, both from Pontypool, received suspended sentences.
A 16-year-old boy, who pleaded guilty to violent disorder, received a six-month referral order to the Newport Youth Offender panel when he appeared at Cwmbran Youth Court on Tuesday, January 21.
All three have now been sentenced as a result of the incident (Image: Gwent Police) Sergeant Paul Turner, from Gwent Police's neighbourhood team at Newport Central, said: "Our priority is to ensure those attending football matches at Rodney Parade and visiting our city can enjoy the game and do so in safety.
"During a thorough investigation, we pieced together the events of the day, starting with clear surveillance footage from inside the stadium to the disorder in the city centre, to bring these three men to justice.
"These additional football banning orders, together with the sentencings, highlight a strong stance that the disgraceful behaviour and conduct seen that day in the city centre will not be tolerated.
"People run the risk of not attending football matches for a significant period of time should they pose a risk before, during, or after matches and will be dealt with accordingly."
Under the terms of the football banning order, Grant, Friel, and Thomas must not enter any premises for the purpose of attending any football matches in the UK which are regulated for the purposes of the Football Spectators Act 1989.
They must not be within 1,000 metres of any regulated football match in the UK during the period of five hours before kick-off until five hours after the final whistle on any day on which a regulated football match is being played.
They must not enter any town or city in the UK where Newport County FC or the Wales team are playing a regulated match at any away ground for the duration of the day/evening upon which the match is being played.
The defendants may also be required to surrender their passports and travel documents and report to a police station when regulated football matches are being played outside the UK.
If they breach the conditions of this order, the defendants face being sent to prison for six months.
Sergeant Turner added: "The success of this investigation is an example of what can be achieved when partners work together with a common purpose.
"While working alongside Newport County, we have reinforced our continued commitment to protecting our communities and keeping them safe from harm."
A Newport County spokesperson said: "We welcome today's decision by the court.
"There is no place for this abhorrent behaviour and we will continue to work closely with Gwent Police to help identify any incidents of this nature.
"The club will maintain its zero-tolerance approach to such incidents, whether that's at Rodney Parade, the city centre, or for away fixtures, and the imposition of banning orders, as a minimum, for anyone found guilty of such behaviour.
"Newport County has worked tirelessly to create a reputation as a family-friendly football club and it is an image we will do everything in our powers to maintain."

Tijjani Reijnders ‘really excited' to link up with Man City for Club World Cup

Tijjani Reijnders 'could not wait' to undergo his medical with Manchester City and expects to be in their squad for the Club World Cup. The 26-year-old Netherlands midfielder has agreed a five-year contract to move to City from AC Milan for 55million euros (approximately £46million) and told Italian media he had spent Sunday conducting a medical with Pep Guardiola's side. Advertisement City will play their first match of the Club World Cup against Morocco's Wydad AC on June 18 and the arrival of Reijnders could also impact the future of Jack Grealish at City. Reijnders told Gazzetta: 'The medical? I couldn't wait to do it. The plan is to take part at the Club World Cup with City. I'm really excited about that. 'Doing that means I'll get to know my new team-mates soon.' Reijnders was a bright spark in a disappointing season for Milan, who only finished eighth in Serie A, missing out on qualification for Europe. Manchester City's Jack Grealish could leave this summer (Martin Rickett/PA) Reijnders, who joined the Italian giants from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2023, scored 15 goals in 2024-25 and will bolster Guardiola's midfield options following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne. Advertisement As first reported by the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, England international Grealish looks set to miss out on City's final 35-man squad for the Club World Cup. The 29-year-old was not summoned from the bench in last month's FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace and omitted from the squad for the last game of the season at Fulham altogether.

UNC women's basketball team's top reserve earns Team USA Basketball invite

UNC women's basketball team's top reserve earns Team USA Basketball invite One of the UNC women's basketball team's top guards earned a pretty exclusive offseason honor. For the Red, White & Blue 🇺🇸 Congrats Lanie on earning an invite to USA Basketball's Women's U19 Trials! — Carolina Women's Basketball (@uncwbb) June 5, 2025 The UNC women's basketball team is fresh off one of its best seasons under head coach Courtney Banghart, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the second time in four seasons. A major portion of North Carolina's success came from its veteran trio of Alyssa Ustby, Maria Gakdeng and Lexi Donarski, who played their final year of college basketball. The Tar Heels welcomed a few high school recruits to Chapel Hill, while lucking out in the transfer portal. One of UNC's greatest additions was sixth woman Lanie Grant, the 2024 Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year. In two starts across 37 games played for North Carolina, Grant averaged 7.3 points per game (best amongst reserves). Just three months removed from her freshman season, Grant received some big news, earning an invite to the USA Basketball Women's U19 Trials on June 18. Grant, one of 27 athletes selected, has an opportunity to make the final, 12-player roster. The 2025 FIBA U19 Women's World Cup will take place July 12-20 in Brno, Czech Republic. Though she came off the bench for most of the Tar Heels' games last season, Grant delivered a major impact. Grant scored in double digits 11 times, netting a career-high 19 points during UNC's 79-75 win at Louisville on February 23. Grant will likely be asked to step into a starting role during North Carolina's upcoming campaign, replacing Lexi Donarski as a starting guard. The Tar Heels will have a younger, new-look roster, with Grant poised to take on a leadership role in just Year Two. Tottenham Hotspur dismiss head coach Vilahamn

Tottenham Hotspur have dismissed head coach Robert Vilahamn off the back of a poor season in the Barclays Women's Super League. WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Lilywhites this morning. Advertisement The 42-year-old was appointed Spurs head coach in summer 2023 after impressing in his time with Swedish club BK Häcken. In his first year in North London, Vilahamn gave Spurs a licence to thrill. The Lilywhites were one of the most entertaining sides in the Barclays Women's Super League, often leading by attack rather than defence. Spurs ended the campaign in sixth position while they reached a first Adobe Women's FA Cup final where they were beaten by Manchester United. The 2024/2025 season promised more excitement and progression but unfortunately, Spurs didn't deliver. The club managed to win just five of their 22 league matches and ended the campaign one place above the relegation zone. Spurs ended the campaign without a win in 10 league games. Off the back of a hugely disappointing campaign, Spurs opted to review Vilahamn's position as head coach and a decision has been made to end his tenure. Spurs will now begin the recruitment process in a bid to appoint a new head coach ahead of pre-season.
