No encroachments will be tolerated in Nagarahole: Karnataka forest minister
Taking note of the 52 families forcefully entering Nagarahole Tiger Reserve on Monday and Tuesday and building huts and shed, Khandre said there are some group of people who are inciting them and spreading false news about retired and serving forest department officials, NGOs and experts.
He said the rights of the people who are now asserting their rights on forest land in Nagrahole have been dismissed. They should approach the legal authorities, he said.
Khandre directed the forest department officials to submit a report on the chronology of the incident and all other details within two days, along with the court judgments regarding the rights over forest lands. Speaking at the sidelines of the release of two books- Nagarahole- A Wild Paradise and Wildlife Forensic Evidence Collection Guide- by Kali Tiger Reserve- in Bengaluru, Khandre said, 'No sort of encroachment will be allowed and action will be taken against the encroachers. There is zero tolerance to encroachments and people instead of writing to forest department, they should file appeals in courts,' he said.
Pertaining to the felling of trees, Khandre said there is a need to amend the Tree Preservation Act to take strict action against those illegally felling trees in government lands, forest land and road sides.
Citing the recent Supreme Court orders where the court took objection to tree felling, Khandre said, 'there is increasing outcry among people over permissions being given to axe hundreds of trees in the name of development.'
The minister directed all government authorities not to give unnecessary permissions to cut down trees.

State to recruit 540 forest Guards, equal compensation for wildlife victims: Khandre
Bengaluru: To address staff shortages in the Forest Department, the government has already appointed 310 forest watchers and is now in the process of recruiting 540 forest guards, announced Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment Eshwar B Khandre in the Legislative Council. Responding to a question by MLC S. Keshava Prasad, the minister said that families of those who die due to wildlife attacks—such as elephant or tiger encounters—currently receive a compensation of ₹20 lakh. Victims of snakebite deaths are provided with ₹2 lakh compensation through the Agriculture Department. Khandre noted that Karnataka has witnessed a rise in its wildlife population, leading to more human-wildlife conflicts. To address this, the government has approved a dedicated elephant task force for Dakshina Kannada district, which will be officially notified in two to three days. The 32-member force will be tasked with driving elephants back into forests as well as assisting in capturing rogue elephants. For elephant corridor and habitat conservation, the government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). A team led by Prof. R. Sukumar has already begun a detailed study. Expressing sorrow over the recent poisoning of a tigress and her four cubs at the Male Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, the minister confirmed that action has been initiated under the Wildlife Protection Act against those responsible. A deputy range forest officer and other officials have been suspended for failing to ensure timely payment of outsourced frontline staff, and an inquiry is ongoing. On tackling elephant-human conflicts, Khandre said the government has prioritized the construction of railway barricades and assured that concerns of people in Ramanagara district would be addressed. Proposals for new elephant camps are also under consideration. He further said the government is aware of the growing menace of monkeys damaging crops and announced that instructions will be issued to capture them.

K'taka to build another 300 km of rail barricades
The government plans to construct an additional 300 km of rail barricades at a cost of Rs 500 crore in the forest areas of the state, to address the human-elephant conflict, said Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre. "There are elephants outside the forests, in coffee estates. There is no difference between forests and coffee estates for elephants. About 214 elephants are outside forests in Kodagu, 60-70 in Hassan. This is leading to loss of lives," Khandre said. He noted that the government has already installed 3,807 km of tentacle fencing and 2,711 km of elephant trench. He also said the implementation of Wildlife Protection Act has led to an increase in animal population. Citing the 2022 census, the Minister highlighted that Karnataka has the highest number of elephants in the country at 6,395, a number that is likely even higher now. The state also has the second-highest tiger population, with 563. "There are thousands of leopards," he said and emphasised that developmental works like national highways, electricity connections contribute to the problem by causing fragmentation of elephant corridors.
