Dacia's boss wants to move upmarket, but without a big shift in prices

'Let me put it to you this way – everyone knows what the Duster is. It's a perfectly defined car; it costs around €20,000, it's very sturdy, maybe a bit rough and tough. What we're not trying to do here is to offer another, bigger Duster. What we are exactly doing is putting a new car in the middle of the table, in front of the C-segment buyers. That's three million people.'
Denis Le Vot is one of the most straight-talking corporate executives you will meet. Born in Landivisiau in Brittany, he has been in charge of the
Dacia
brand since 2020. He has masterminded its massive recent successes, which have seen the compact Sandero hatchback unseat the mighty
Tesla Model Y
as Europe's best-selling car last year. He's someone who won't equivocate about a question – he'll either give you the answer or just flat-out tell you he's not going to do so. Such honesty and openness are often too rare in this world.
While Le Vot has scored notable success with Dacia, he's now taking on a big challenge – trying to take a brand known for its bargain-basement pricing and offering it to the most middle-class buyers of all, those purchasing so-called C-segment SUVs in Europe.
That segment accounts for 23 per cent of the total new car market in Europe and includes some of the best-selling cars around, such as the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, VW Tiguan, and Toyota RAV4. How can Le Vot tempt those buyers out of their familiar brands and into a supposedly cheap-and-cheerful Bigster?

, but Le Vot's not planning on letting the car simply speak for itself. He wants to pull hard on the purse strings of mittel-Europa's car buyers.
The Bigster is Dacia's biggest model yet and a crucial climb upwards into more profitable territory
'We've been talking to buyers in Germany, which is the biggest market for C-segment models' Le Vot told The Irish Times. 'And we've been asking them: 'If I take this out, or that out, does it disqualify me?' And that's the reason that we're now offering an electric tailgate and two-zone air conditioning for the Bigster, because they said: 'If you don't do that, I'm not buying the car.''
Le Vot is counting on more than mere extra equipment in the new model to draw buyers in. He's also counting on a certain amount of shock value.
'So, three million customers are going to replace their C-segment SUVs in 2025,' said Le Vot. 'Now, the average transaction price across the whole segment in 2019 was €29,000. In 2024, it was €38,000. And so we're looking for those among the three million who were used to paying around €30,000 for their car and now they're being asked to pay around €38,000, and they're saying: 'Well, I don't have that kind of money.'

'So what we, at Dacia, need to say is that across the other side of the street is one of our dealers, and he's proposing to you that you can have a car for the price you used to pay, but it still has all of the stuff you're used to.'
Dacia is part of the
Renault Group
, and Renault itself has seen the sharp edge of this equation. Last year, Dacia outsold Renault, certainly in Ireland and definitely in other European markets, and Renault's own C-segment SUV offerings have all increased in price too. So at what point does Dacia start to bite the corporate hand that feeds it?

Not yet, says Le Vot. 'Let's say that the three million people buying C-segment cars is represented in this room here,' he said. 'So, the part of the segment that is Renault is maybe these three chairs over here. So, preventing ourselves from having such a fantastic offer in the C-segment and making lots of happy clients? It's not a great thing to do, and let's be clear, with Luca [Luca De Meo, Renault Group chief executive] there's no glass ceiling for Dacia.'
Le Vot went on to say that Dacia has already taken 10,000 orders for the new Bigster, even before it hits dealerships, and that gives the company an insight into what cars those buyers are trading out of. According to his figures, 84 per cent of those buyers are so-called 'conquest sales', which means that the buyers have not previously owned either a Dacia or a Renault model. Of the remaining 16 per cent, 10 per cent is made up of existing Dacia owners looking to trade up to a larger car, and the remaining 4 per cent are trading in Renault models.
'So in answer to your question, it's only 6 per cent of our total sales volume, and that's still going towards creating value for the group as a whole.' Le Vot claims that 85 per cent of Dacia buyers go on to either buy a new Dacia again or move to another vehicle from within the Renault Group. Such customer loyalty is hard to come by.
One area where Dacia lags behind the mainstream competition is in its safety rating. The brand has often resisted fitting the sort of high-end electronic safety gizmos needed to score a maximum five-star rating from the independent crash test experts at Euro NCAP, and Le Vot says that this won't be changing just because the company is now chasing more demanding customers.

'We are not chasing star scores, let me be super-clear about that,' said Le Vot. 'We care very much about passive safety, but on the active – on the electronics – we're not chasing that. When we spoke to those potential customers in Germany, this was okay with them.
'The truth is that Dacia is about making choices, for instance, about lane-keeping assistance. Many of us just turn this function off, and so if it's something that lots of people just don't use, then we won't sell it.
'When we talk to our customers, value for money is the number one thing for them, and then it's style. But the third is 'essentiality'. They don't want a car which doesn't have buttons, which has 55 screens and connected surfaces, and a massaging seat that also cuts your hair.'

A dramatic and incident filled second stage of Rally Italia Sardegna, round six of the World Rally Championship, claimed the Irish crew of Josh McErlean/Eoin Treacy along with their M-Sport Ford team mates Gregoire Munster/Louis Louka and Martins Sesks/Renars Francis leaving Jourdan Serderidis as the sole Ford competitor, but the Greek driver reported a broken suspension damper at the stage end. Meanwhile, French driver Sebastien Ogier (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1) leads overnight 2.1s ahead of compatriot Adrien Fourmaux (Hyundai i20 Rally1) with his Hyundai team mate Ott Tanak 5.2s further behind in third. It had begun well for Kilrea's McErlean and Killeagh's Treacy, who followed up their strong performance in the shakedown to post the sixth fastest time on SS1 - 5.4s behind rally leader Sebastien Ogier (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1). "It was okay. I don't think I took much out of the road, it cleaned a lot, I saw Ogier's time before the stage and do that third on the road is incredible. Still a lot more to go." Unfortunately, the "more" only lasted about 8.5km into the Telti-Calangianus-Berchidda 18.43 km stage when McErlean's Puma clipped a tree. "Small mistakes have big consequences, after a positive start we ran wide and damaged the rear suspension and couldn't continue." Aware of his team mates, he added, "Not a great stage for M-Sport. We knew it would be tough, but this is brutal." The Irish duo are hoping to return to the event today (Saturday) under Super Rally where they will have the extra challenge of sweeping the road. Meanwhile, Hyundai's Adrien Fourmaux topped the time sheets after the opening loop of three stages 2.9s ahead of his team mate and reigning WR champion Thierry Neuville with Sebastien Ogier (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1) seeking a record breaking fifth win on the event, 5.2s further behind in third. Championship leader Elfyn Evans (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1) was down in eighth place and 41.2s off the lead, principally due to the fact that he was running first on the road. On the repeat loop, Neuville regained the lead on SS4 only to retire on the next stage following an impact that damaged the suspension. Fourmaux was back in front once more followed by team mate Tanak - 1.2s behind with Ogier third before setting the best time on SS6 to lead overnight. There are six stages today and four on Sunday. THIS is the new Renault 5 E-Tech — and this is exactly how you bring back an iconic car from the past. It looks simply incredible, especially in this fetching Pop Yellow colour, and it features loads of design cues from the original Renault 5. Renault have had the good sense to take everything that was good about the old model and re-imagine how it would be if made in the future. Pop princess Dua Lipa, who has a famous album called Future Nostalgia, has hits including the songs Electricity and Blow Your Mind, so I think Renault missed a trick not enlisting her to launch its new EV hatch. Yes, the new Renault 5 is fully electric, unlike the petrol-powered hatchback from the 70, 80s and 90s. The new Renault 5 does tip the scales at 1,524kg, but that's not heavy for an EV, and it never feels overweight to drive. There are two battery sizes, 44kWh paired with a 120bhp electric motor and a 55kWh that I'm testing, which comes with a 150bhp motor. It's not crazy quick, 0-100kph takes eight seconds dead with a top speed of 150kph. But if you want supercar performance from a Renault 5 then the rear-wheel drive RS Turbo 3E that's built to drift is the one for you. It will produce 540bhp and 4,800Nm of torque and is rumoured to cost €150k. But back to the 5 E-Tech and as it has a wheel at every corner with short overhangs front and rear, it's really agile and handles like it's on rails. Inside the 5 E-Tech's interior is another treat with lots of yellow trim and fabric and retro logos and graphics. The dash layout is brilliant with a series of toggle switches for the climate and dual screens, one for the driver and a central touchscreen infotainment system that runs Google operating system. There's four driving modes and everything changes to different colours with Sport turning red, and Sport mode really livens up the performance. Health Minister calls for CHI report on consultant misuse of waiting list system to be published

THE HEALTH MINISTER has said she wants an internal investigation which found a consultant had breached guidelines by referring public patients to his own private clinic to be released in the 'public interest'. It follows reports that an internal investigation by Children's Health Ireland (CHI) found that the consultant breached HSE guidelines with these referrals . The consultant was paid €35,800 via the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF), which aims to cut waiting times by paying private practices to treat patients on public waiting lists. While CHI said the 'confidentiality of those who participated' in the internal investigation needs to be respected, Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill called for a redacted version of the report to be released in the public interest. The Irish Times today reported that the consultant at the centre of the internal CHI investigation didn't fulfil his on-call hours for more than three years due to health issues, yet went 'above and beyond his contractual hours' to conduct weekend clinics. The Irish Times reports that the consultation seen twice the number of patients in the weekend clinic than during his regular weekday equivalent, and received €35,800 for this weekend work. Caroll MacNeill said these reports 'suggests a very significant problem'. She told RTÉ's Morning Ireland that she wants 'maximum productivity' in the public system and wants to 'remove incentives that may create perversions of the kind that's described there'. She added: 'I do not want to see a situation where there is less than full productivity in the public system and then private clinics picking that slack up when insourcing an NTPF model. 'I have a concern that that has led to some incentives to delay treatment, and that is why a number of weeks ago, we commissioned a full audit of that practice right across the board. 'Where we look at this report, that has not been published, my concern for that is the correct use of taxpayer's money, but even more importantly, patient safety and patient outcomes for very young children who needed surgical intervention.' 'Inaccurate reporting' The internal CHI report in question was conducted at the end of 2021 and finalised in January 2022. In a statement on Monday, CHI said the 'recommendations have been implemented and are ongoing'. However, the CHI statement said there has been 'inaccurate media reporting in relation to NTPF payments to a Consultant'. CHI said these clinics did not take place in the Consultant's private rooms but 'occurred in a public clinic, in one of its hospitals, on a Saturday'. 'The NTPF funded the hospital for this waiting list initiative and there was no charge to patients,' said CHI. Advertisement 'This was over and above the Consultant's contractual hours. There are no direct payments to CHI staff from NTPF.' CHI added that it considered requests to publish the report and sought legal advice. The statement said it is 'primarily a HR report where the confidentiality of those who participated and fair procedures need to be respected given the sensitive nature of the report'. NTPF funding The NTPF aims to cut waiting times by paying private practices to treat patients on public waiting lists. However, NTPF funding to CHI has been suspended and Carroll MacNeill said the NTPF has 'looked for certain assurances from CHI, which I understand they're in the process of receiving'. Carroll MacNeill said she had been assured by the NTPF that the existing surgery scheduled will not be impacted by this. The Health Minister added that she had a 'very good meeting' with the Attorney General last week and she was informed that she does not have a 'legal basis to publish the report' as it is the 'property of CHI'. 'I do recognise some of the difficulties that CHI face in that this was a HR report where people contributed on a confidential basis and put themselves at risk in doing so,' said Carroll MacNeill. 'There's a measure of management, because we do want people to contribute to other HR processes. 'Nevertheless, I think it's important that a redacted version of this report is published in the broader public interest. 'It is important that people understand the broad issues that have happened here and what needs to happen next.' Last month, HSE CEO Bernard Gloster said that the potential for CHI to be fully subsumed into the HSE will be one option considered amid concerns around clinical care and governance. Carroll MacNeill today said this is a 'separate, longer term public policy consideration'. Meanwhile, three board members of CHI resigned last week , and Carroll MacNeill remarked that there has been 'a significant refresh'. 'There are more board vacancies and I think the correct approach to this is to continue to appoint members of the HSE board to CHI board, insofar as that is possible.' And while Carroll MacNeill called on CHI to release a redacted version of the report, she said she has 'confidence' in its chair Lucy Nugent, who was appointed last November and took up the role in February. Carroll MacNeill said Nugent 'has begun a significant program of transformation in a couple of different ways'. 'A lot of these practices predate her, and I want to offer my support to the new CEO.'
