Venezuela police arrest suspect in TikTok user's murder
Jesus Sarmiento, who had more than 77,000 followers on the social media platform, was broadcasting live when armed men entered the residence where he was staying and shot him.
Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced Sunday on Instagram the arrest of Pierina Uribarri, whom he described as the partner of Adrian Romero, the alleged gunman.
Prosecutors charged Uribarri with intentional homicide, criminal association and terrorism.
Arrest warrants had been issued for Romero and two other alleged perpetrators, Wilbert Gonzalez and Gerald Nieto.
In Sarmiento's final broadcast, banging on a door and a woman's screams for 'help' can be heard in the background.
'They shot me, they shot me,' Sarmiento is heard saying before blood appears on the floor. Two armed men are visible before the broadcast ends.
Sarmiento had spoken in his TikTok posts about the leader of the Tren de Aragua gang, Hector Rusthenford Guerrero, who is one of Venezuela's most wanted criminals, known by the alias 'Nino Guerrero.'
He also posted photos and videos of alleged gang members and denounced extortion by police officers.
The government has maintained that the Tren de Aragua — which the United States considers a 'terrorist' organization — has already been dismantled and denies its existence.
In May, a young Mexican influencer was murdered during a live stream in Jalisco state.

A 67-year-old man convicted of the 1982 murder of a woman he abducted from her office was put to death by lethal injection in the southern US state of Florida on Tuesday. Kayle Bates was sentenced to death in 1983 for the murder of Janet Renee White, 24, who worked at an insurance company in Lynn Haven, Florida. White was attacked at her office by Bates after she returned from lunch and was stabbed to death in nearby woods. Bates was executed at 6:17 p.m. (10:17 p.m. GMT) at the Florida State Prison, according to officials. There have been 29 executions in the United States in 2025, the most since 2014, when a total of 35 inmates were also put to death. Twenty-four of this year's executions have been carried out by lethal injection, two by firing squad, and three by nitrogen hypoxia, which involves pumping nitrogen gas into a face mask, causing the prisoner to suffocate. The use of nitrogen gas as a method of capital punishment has been denounced by UN experts as cruel and inhumane. Florida has carried out the most executions in 2025 with 10. The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 US states, while three others – California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania – have moratoriums in place. President Donald Trump is a proponent of capital punishment, and on his first day in office called for an expansion of its use 'for the vilest crimes.'

Venezuela says 66 children ‘kidnapped' by the United States
CARACAS: The Venezuelan government on Tuesday claimed that 66 Venezuelan children are being illegally held in the United States after being separated from their parents during deportation, as the White House cracks down on immigration. Caracas is demanding the children be handed over to Venezuelan authorities so they can be repatriated. 'We have 66 children kidnapped in the United States. It's a number that grows each day... a cruel and inhumane policy,' said Camila Fabri, president of the government's Return to the Homeland program that advocates for the voluntary return of people who left the country. She spoke at a gathering at which women read out letters to US First Lady Melania Trump asking her to intercede on behalf of the children, who they said had been placed in foster care. More than 7.7 million Venezuelans have left the country since 2014, the largest population exodus in Latin America's recent history, according to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. It blamed 'rampant violence, inflation, gang-warfare, soaring crime rates as well as shortages of food, medicine and essential services.' In recent years Venezuelans in the United States had been granted temporary protected immigration status, allowing them to live and work there for a designated time period. But President Donald Trump's administration revoked that protection as part of his aggressive campaign to deport millions of undocumented migrants from the United States. The US Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to AFP requests for comment on the claim by Caracas. To date, 21 stranded children have been returned to Venezuela, including a daughter of one of the 252 Venezuelans detained in Trump's immigration crackdown in March, who was accused without evidence of gang activity and deported to El Salvador's notorious CECOT prison. The men were freed in a prisoner swap in July and flown home to Venezuela, where four of them told AFP they suffered beatings, abuse and deprivation. Fabri said that 10,631 Venezuelans have returned in 2025, both those deported frm the United States and others stranded in Mexico. The White House has also squared off against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who faces federal drug trafficking charges, with the US placing a $50 million bounty on him. Washington, which does not recognize Maduro's past two election victories, accuses the South American country's leader of leading a cocaine trafficking gang, and has launched anti-drug operations in the Caribbean. On Monday Maduro said he would deploy millions of militia members in the country in response to the US 'threats.'

Iran carries out public execution of murderer who killed four
A man was publicly executed in southern Iran on Tuesday after being found guilty of murdering four people, state media reported. 'One of the perpetrators of the brutal murder of four members of a family in Beyram, in Fars province, was hanged in public on Tuesday,' said Mizan, the news portal of the country's judiciary. Murder and rape are punishable by death in Iran, which is second only to China in terms of the number of executions it carries out, according to rights groups including Amnesty International. Iran generally carries out public executions by hanging at dawn. 'The accused and his wife murdered a mother and three children during a robbery in October 2024,' Mizan said. The couple were sentenced to death in February of 2025, with the verdict confirmed by the supreme court in April, according to Iranian media. Mizan reported that the execution of the man's wife would be carried out in prison, without giving a date.
