Naini Lake in Nainital is facing a crisis with dead fish and a deteriorating ecosystem. Locals suspect predatory Mangura fish, and authorities are working to address the issue
Naini Lake, the iconic body of water in Nainital, Uttarakhand, is currently facing an alarming environmental crisis. The unexpected death of fish and the discovery of their half-eaten bodies have raised serious concerns about the lake's health. The foul smell in the water and the dead fish floating on the surface indicate a severe deterioration in the lake's biological condition.
The Suspected Culprit: Mangura Fish
What is particularly disturbing is that some of the dead fish appear to have been half-eaten, pointing to the presence of a predatory fish in the lake. Locals suspect the Mangura fish (also known as catfish), a carnivorous species, could be behind this disturbing phenomenon.
On June 27, a Mangura fish was captured on camera, but authorities have yet to remove it from the lake, allowing the situation to worsen.
A History Of Problems With Mangura Fish
This is not the first time Naini Lake has faced issues with the Mangura fish. In July 2010, a local community introduced the species into the lake, leading to the removal of 39 Mangura fish by the Lake Development Authority.
This history underscores the importance of timely intervention to prevent damage to the lake's delicate ecosystem.
Some experts suggest that the silver carp and grass carp species, which have been residing in the lake for some time, could be reaching the end of their natural lifespan. While this may explain some of the deaths, the growing number of dead fish and the strong odour have caused significant distress among both locals and tourists.
Efforts To Address The Crisis
Rohitash Sharma, the Municipal Executive Officer, confirmed that efforts to clean the lake are underway, with dead fish being removed as they are discovered. Meanwhile, Vijay Nath Shukla, the District Development Authority Secretary, stated that experts from Pantnagar University's fisheries department have been contacted, and their report is eagerly awaited.
Urgent Need For Scientific Investigation
Given the seriousness of the situation, experts and authorities agree that a scientific investigation is needed urgently. This will help identify the causes of the biological imbalance and pollution in the lake, so effective steps can be taken to restore the lake's natural beauty and ecological balance.

Boss Attacks Unpaid Intern For Asking A Day Off To Nurse Sick Parents, Sparks Debate

Last Updated: A Reddit user shared a post about their friend alleging that she was denied emergency leave while working as an unpaid intern. A disturbing incident has come to light where a boss's decision to deny an unpaid intern's request for emergency leave has sparked widespread outrage about workplace norms and the treatment of interns. A Reddit user shared a post about their friend alleging that she was denied emergency leave while working as an unpaid intern at an organisation. Titled 'Boss won't allow my friend to take emergency leave as an unpaid intern," the post included a screenshot of the WhatsApp conversation between the intern and her boss. The caption read, 'My friend is doing an unpaid internship, but her boss gives her unlimited responsibility. He expects seriousness from his interns even though he doesn't treat them seriously." The first text in the screenshot, written by the intern, read, 'Sir I'm really sorry for the short notice, I won't be able to come in today. I have an emergency situation at home since my parents are really sick and on bedrest. So I need to stay back. I am really sorry for the sudden absence but it wont happen again. I'll send you the morphed runway videos by today." Here's How Fellow Redditors Reacted The internet was quick to react to the post. One user wrote, 'Whether you are an intern or an employee, it doesn't matter. If you need leave for your family, take it without guilt and without being sorry. Work won't stop, but you will end up losing time with your family. If your company lacks contingency measures in such emergencies, it's their fault, not yours." Another added, 'If the place falls apart because of an intern taking a day off, they really shouldn't be keeping interns!" A third commented, 'Stop doing unpaid internships. It is a reflection of their work culture. A lot of companies simply hire interns to replace their full time employees." 'Tell your friend to respond with 'You're right. Prioritizing my parents' health over an unpaid internship exposes my shocking lack of commitment. Next time, I'll remind them to get sick on a weekend or during a major holiday," remarked a user. New Odisha govt initiative to identify, preserve heritage sites in rural areas

Last Updated: Berhampur, Aug 2 (PTI) The Odisha government has launched an initiative to identify, preserve and promote heritage sites and artifacts in rural areas, officials said. The data collected through the 'Panchayat Dharohar' programme with the involvement of elected members of the panchayats will be uploaded on the 'Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar' platform of the Ministry of Culture for future development, they said. Odisha has around 6,800 gram panchayats. The panchayats can play a major role in the identification, documentation, sustainable conservation and promotion of heritage sites, a recent letter issued by the Department of Panchayat Raj to district collectors said. 'We have received data of around 20 sites so far and expect to receive more in the next few days," said Prahallad Pradhan, District Panchayat Officer (DPO) of Ganjam. There are 503 panchayats in the district. 'Several heritage sites exist in rural areas of the culturally rich Ganjam district. There is a need to urgently identify those for their development. We thank the government for this initiative," said Subash Chandra Padhy, a retired professor at Berhampur University. Manoranjan Gouda, sarpanch of the Kaithakhandi panchayat in Digapahandi block, said they have already identified several such sites. 'We have discussed the matter with other village heads and urged them to accord this exercise high priority. The heritage sites are the pride of the district," said Gouda, who is also the president of the Ganjam Sarpanch Association.
