Nursing influencer Hailey Okula died of rare complication following childbirth, husband says

NBC News04-04-2025

The husband of nursing influencer Hailey Okula said she died of a rare complication after giving birth to their son and first child, Crew.
In an interview with FOX 11 Los Angeles, Matthew Okula said Hailey, an ER nurse known on Instagram as Nurse Hailey, gave birth via C-section on Saturday. Shortly afterward, he said a doctor informed him they were doing CPR on her.
"She went into cardiac arrest and the doctors say it was from a very, very rare complication known as amniotic fluid embolism," Okula said.
The LAFD firefighter was visibly emotional as he recalled losing his wife, saying, "She gave her life in the most noble way."
"She was able to see him for a split second, and I'm always going to remember that," he said about Hailey and their son.
On Friday, Matthew continued to honor the memory of his late wife, sharing some 'raw, unedited' videos from their wedding on Hailey's Instagram story. The videos included their first dance and footage of them dancing with loved ones.
"I want everyone to see a little more into who Hailey was outside of Rnnewgrads," Matthew captioned one of the videos.
Hailey founded RN New Grads in 2019 to support new nurses by providing information on how to launch their careers. The nurse also shared about how she and her husband struggled with fertility before getting pregnant with their first child.
In a Wednesday Instagram post, Matthew recalled how Hailey poured her soul into her career.
"She dreamed of helping new nurses thrive while also being present for our sweet Crew, building a life and legacy she was so proud of," Matthew wrote.
What is an amniotic fluid embolism?
An amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is an anaphylactic reaction that happens when the fluid inside the uterus gets into the bloodstream of a pregnant person before, during or after childbirth, according to Dr. Erin Higgins, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospitals.
"The body sees this as, like, kind of as an intruder, you know, just like any infection," Higgins told NBC News. "But, it can lead to cardiopulmonary collapse, so the blood pressure goes down, the heart rate doesn't respond appropriately, and patients become short of breath."
Higgins said AFE commonly causes cardiac arrest and hypotension and can lead to heavy bleeding, heart failure, kidney damage, and liver damage.
Higgins said the condition is extremely rare, occurring two to six times in 100,000 deliveries, and the cause is unknown.
"Probably one of the scariest things about it is that we don't know," Higgins said. "We can't, you know, like with so many other things in pregnancy, we can say that somebody has certain risk factors for pregnancy complications. Like somebody with high blood pressure outside of pregnancy is going to be at higher risk for preeclampsia."
AFE is also very hard to diagnose before it happens, and a patient's condition can worsen very quickly once symptoms kick in, Higgins said. There's also "general agreement among the experts that no recognizable risk factors for AFE exist."
"It often happens very quickly, and patients go from fine to having this cardiopulmonary collapse," Higgins said.
Higgins added that the mortality rate for the condition is anywhere from 10 to 90%, and it is not known why some die from it while others don't. Quick initiation of CPR and having a team that responds quickly once AFE is identified is key, she said.
Matthew recalled to FOX 11 Los Angeles the moments after he found out his wife was inflicted with the complication.
"I'm making the decision — am I going to the ICU with my wife, or am I staying to wait for my newborn little baby," he said. "Not the decision we thought I would be making."
On Instagram, Matthew said his wife's love for their baby "was limitless, long before he entered this world."
"She would have been the most amazing mom," he wrote. "Her spirit, courage, and love will live on in our son, and through everyone whose lives she touched."

John Whaite says 'I feel like an ageing fool' as he struggles with diagnosis

Strictly Come Dancing star John Whaite took to social media with a candid update two years after revealing he had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder Former Strictly Come Dancing star John Whaite has candidly opened up on his health struggles in a new social media upload. The Bake Off star, 36, took to Instagram to reveal his thoughts on how his "superpower" can sometimes "make life confusing". John was diagnosed with ADHD in 2023 and said at the time he wished he had "known this sooner". According to the NHS, ADHD - which stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - is "a condition where the brain works differently to most people". ‌ The health service explains symptoms of the diagnosis can leave people having trouble with things like concentrating and sitting still. Now, in an honest video shared to his social media page, John admitted of his condition: "Sometimes it makes life almost unbearable. I was promised I'd get older and wiser, but sometimes I feel like I'm just an ageing fool." ‌ He said in the clip: "Oh can we just talk about the reality of life with ADHD because you know a lot of the time we think we have a superpower and sometimes it can serve us very well. "It can serve us in so many ways where we can fixate on things and achieve things and create things and really do the best work or something imaginable but often that's such a pyrrhic victory because we bleed ourselves dry or we exhaust ourselves in doing it or we abandon plans or friends or family and the reality of ADHD is that it can make us believe that what we're doing in life sometimes is the exactly the righteous course of action for us." He went on: "It's the right path in spite of what people who love us might say. And then when it gets to the point where we are our interest fizzles away, the reality kicks in and we see the truth and we see the situation for what it is. "At that point we're left kind of thinking f***, I've given up so much for this. I've ignored people who love me for this. And this is really exhausting because usually the older you get the wise you get. And while that can still be true in a situation where you have ADHD I think the reality. "As you get older you don't necessarily get wiser, you just get older and when you get older and you keep making silly little mistakes people become less tolerant of those mistakes because you're meant to be older and wiser." ‌ He added that despite so much positivity surrounding the "superpower", there is also a flip side that can be "crippling and so dehumanising and annoying". John candidly confessed: "If I could chose to live life neurotypically at this point in my life, I would jump at the chance and I know that's not very pro ADHD it's not very kind of holding up the flag our community but sometimes it's just exhausting, it's horrific and sometimes I f****** hate it." John has regularly been open about his condition since his diagnosis. He has also spoke out about his mental health battle, previously suffering from bulimia and suicidal thoughts. ‌ He explained at how one point he was so low he decided to quit fame and move to Canada, where he volunteered on a farm in a bid to go back to basics and help him recover. Speaking on Steph's Packed Lunch in 2020, he said he also suffers from sexsomnia, a condition similar to night terrors and sleep walking, but instead he engages in sexual behaviour that he doesn't remember when he's awake. "You have night terrors, I have night pleasures, because I have sexsomnia," he said. "In the night, I'll be fast asleep... My boyfriend wakes up and I'll be fondling him. He's having the time of his life and I'm fast asleep." ‌ He has also admitted he was left feeling "suicidal" in the past following his Bake Off win. "I kind of felt like I'd failed. And I felt suicidal. I really really did think I was going to end it," John explained.

Tourist's foot is 'crushed like glass' before 'everything went black'

Danielle Kliaman, 22, was left in turmoil after a horror crash left her without some of her foot. She now needs an amputation on her leg after the disaster crash in Thailand A young woman has recalled how "everything went black" after a drunk driver crashed into her scooter and left her foot "crushed like glass". Danielle Kliaman, from Canada, was enjoying her "dream" trip in Thailand when she suffered the "near-death experience". The content creator woke up to everyone "screaming" around her as she looked down and saw that the top half of her foot had "ripped off." ‌ Luckily, her sister and brother-in-law were holidaying nearby and rushed to the scene. But when they reached the hospital, the doctors wanted to amputate her leg. Although they managed to delay the major amputation, Danielle has been left with extrutiating pain and now thinks the limb needs to be removed entirely. ‌ Danielle shared the news with her 32,000 Instagram followers earlier this month. The content creator said: "I had just gone through a near-death experience, so my mind was not ready to deal with the trauma of losing part of my leg. 'But I had no idea how hard it would be. The bones were so shattered that even after reconstruction, they never really fused properly. I've had multiple surgeries and so much rehab, but it's like my foot never remembered how to function." She added: "The pain has become chronic. Every day, I'm limping, and it never healed the way we hoped. I don't think I'll ever be fully prepared for it - it's such a life-altering decision But I know that I may never walk without pain or suffering on this leg, and it feels like an exciting opportunity to get to live life again. I'm excited to step into a future where pain doesn't call the shots anymore.' Danielle had been in Thailand for a few months when she was hit by a drunk driver just over a year ago on April 13. She had spent the day 'laughing with friends and strangers'. Recalling the ordeal, she said: 'I got on my bike and it was one of those rare moments where everything felt like a dream. Then everything flipped; I saw lights, felt the impact, and everything went black. ‌ 'I thought I was dead. When I opened my eyes, I could see people running, and I could hear people screaming. I remember trying to stand, but the shock was immediate. My bones were crushed, and I didn't fully understand what I was seeing. I blacked out again, and when I woke up, I was in the back of a pick-up truck and a man was holding me still.' Thankfully, her sister and brother-in-law were travelling in the same area. They rushed straight to the hospital after a local woman rang them on Danielle's phone. She said: 'The top half of my foot was ripped off, and every single bone in my foot was crushed like glass. 'There was no structure left–it was limp. The Thai doctors wanted to amputate right away because there was nothing to rebuild. But I couldn't make that decision yet, and I wasn't ready to say goodbye to my foot." She continued: "Agony isn't the word. It was this deep, burning pain. But I also felt numb and terrified.' Danielle doesn't have a date for her amputation yet, but her mindset has started to shift. She feels there is something 'empowering' about finally making a decision. 'I'm not losing a part of me," the creator said. 'I'm reclaiming the rest of me. Amputation is not going to be easy, but I know that the possibilities that could come out of it definitely outweigh the options I have if I keep it. When I got hit, I almost died and coming to terms with that really reminds you of everything that you have to be grateful for.'
