Roy Keane leaves Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher in hysterics over ‘strange' question
When Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit reunited with Roy Keane on the Stick To Football podcast, the Manchester United icon was reminded of a hilarious story from one of their past meetings
Roy Keane had podcast co-hosts Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher laughing as he recounted a side-splitting tale about Ruud Gullit.
The Dutch football legend - known for his illustrious career with AC Milan, PSV, Feyenoord, and Chelsea - appeared on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast. During the show, Keane didn't hesitate to relive a memorable encounter between the two at the 2022 World Cup.
"All the TV companies stay in the same hotel, and I bumped into Ruud at breakfast," the Irishman explained. "I obviously didn't know him.
"I remember being dead polite, and he spoke to me about injuries. He asked me what was the worst injury I had. I thought strange question, but he seemed really interested. So I told him, 'Oh, my cruciate - and I had a hip operation, that set me back a bit.'
"Then I said, 'What about you?', and he went, 'I used to always get side strains,'" recalled Keane, pointing to the side of his ribcage. "I went, 'Side strains?', and he went, 'Yeah, you know when you're lifting trophies.'"
The studio erupted in laughter. "You got me," Keane conceded, while Gullit chuckled knowingly.
Now 62, Gullit is celebrated as one of the all-time greats in Dutch and continental football. Famed for his adaptability, he excelled in numerous roles on the pitch and left a lasting mark wherever he played.
He earned the Ballon d'Or in 1987, the same year he made a record-setting £6million switch from PSV to AC Milan. There, he enjoyed a trophy-laden run with three Serie A wins and two European Cups, forming a legendary trio with Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard - a partnership that also propelled the Netherlands to Euro 1988 glory.
Gullit later joined Chelsea in 1995, paving the way for a wave of international stars like Gianfranco Zola, Gianluca Vialli, and Marcel Desailly. Taking over as player-manager in 1996, he led the club to FA Cup glory in 1997 - the Blues' first major trophy in over a quarter of a century.
Among Chelsea supporters, Gullit is still seen as a transformative figure from the pre- Roman Abramovich years, lauded for his finesse and vision both as a player and manager. That's why it came as a surprise when club owner Todd Boehly failed to recognise him.
"I think football clubs these days are run for business rather than from the heart," Gullit said. "I met Todd Boehly, it was a meeting for all the clubs organised by [ PSG chairman] Nasser [Al-Khelaifi].
"So I thought I'd introduce myself [to Boehly]. He asked me, 'What do you do?' I said, 'I played football, also for Chelsea.'
"He said, 'What did you do then for Chelsea? When were you there?' He didn't know! This is what it is. They don't know what the club is all about."

Chelsea to trim sizeable loan group
Chelsea are open to the fact that they need to sell a host of players, especially those that spent last season on loan. The club's policy is not to carry a large group of loanees that are not expected or likely to make it into the first team. In their 28-man Club World Cup selection, only one loanee progressed into Enzo Maresca squad from last season, midfielder Andrey Santos. The rest, Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Djordje Petrovic, Armando Broja, Joao Felix, Renato Veiga, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, Lesley Ugochukwu and more - are mostly available for sale. The asking price for Kepa is known to be only £5m as he enters the last year of his contract, while Benfica are being credited with serious interest to re-sign Felix. In Sterling's case, the winger made 12 starts on loan at North London club Arsenal last season while the Blues paid around half of his current £300,000-a-week loanees like Alfie Gilchrist, Alex Matos, Leo Castledine and Zak Sturge are also exploring permanent transfers away from Stamford Bridge. Defender Sturge, 20, is in advanced talks about making his loan move at Millwall permanent at the end of the season. Chelsea prefer sales rather than loan moves at this stage but could relax their position later in the transfer window if they struggle to find exits for players. Midfielders Kendry Paez and Mathis Amougou are expected to join Strasbourg on loan while goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe is in talks over a new contract and potentially joining League One club Bolton Wanderers on loan.

Real Madrid legend Luka Modric, 39, 'set to undergo medical' at European giants ahead of move following Club World Cup
Luka Modric has reportedly agreed a move to AC Milan and will undergo a medical at the Italian club after the Club World Cup. The 39-year-old will leave the Bernabeu after 13 years when his contract expires at the end of the month. He has a final shot at adding another piece of silverware to an already trophy-ladden spell in the Spanish capital after being included in Madrid's squad for the expanded tournament. The Croatian midfielder does not want to make the move to Milan official yet because he wants to keep full focus on Madrid and he could feature in the US under former team-mate and new boss Xabi Alonso. But he will complete a medical and the final formal steps needed for a switch after the Club World Cup, according to Fabrizio Romano. Modric was given an emotional send off by Los Blancos fans following his side's final home game of the season last month after it was announced that his contract would not be extended another year. Modric was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia or the MLS but he decided to remain in Europe, and the midfielder intends to feature for Croatia at next year's World Cup. Although he will turn 40 in September, he made 57 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti's side last year, including 35 in the league. In April, the former Ballon d'Or winner shocked fans by joining Swansea as an investor and co-owner. A shock transfer to Rangers had also been touted but he will move to Italy in the summer. During his time at Real the Croatian has made 591 appearances, scoring 43 goals and providing 95 assists. He also won six Champions Leagues, four LaLiga titles, two Copa del Reys and five Club World Cups. Milan missed out on European qualification last season after sinking to a disappointing eighth-place finish - a huge decline from being Serie A runners-up in 2023-24. Meanwhile, Madrid face Saudi side Al-Hilal in Miami on June 18 as they begin their Club World Cup campaign. They then will come up against Mexican club Pachuca and RB Salzburg. Los Blancos have won the tournament, albeit the previous downsized version, on five occasions, making them the most succesful side in the competition's history. They last won it in 2022, beating Al-Hilal 5-3 in the final.
