DBKL aims for 70% of residents to use public transport by 2040

Kuala Lumpur: The Kuala Lumpur Local Plan (PTKL) aims for 70% of the public to be using public transport by 2040, says city mayor Maimunah Sharif. This is in conjunction with PTKL 2040's primary goal of shaping Kuala Lumpur into an all-inclusive 'green' city. In particular, DBKL aims to implement an efficient, low-carbon mobility system city-wide. With 191 initiatives outlined in the plan, PTKL's 'City for All' theme places a heavy focus on sustainability, with the development and maintenance of green spaces a key concept in its spatial planning. During a press briefing, Maimunah said DBKL might provide incentives to increase population density around transit zones where LRT or MRT stations are located. 'This is common in Japan, where people work, live, and play around transit zones. This helps lessen congestion and steers us in the direction of a low-carbon city,' she said. Much of PTKL 2040's zoning revolves around coordinating with the framework of Kuala Lumpur's railway systems, especially the upcoming MRT3 network.
Advertisement PTKL aims to create a transport network that allows the public to go from place to place with a walking distance of less than 400m. There have been various public concerns regarding the accessibility of Kuala Lumpur's public transport system in recent years. Transport think tank My Mobility Vision identified first- and last-mile connectivity as one of the primary issues steering the public towards private vehicle use. Last month, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the use of public transport in Malaysia was still low at around 25%. FMFF urges DP World to delay port charges amid Sapangar Bay congestion

Effective 15 July 2025, DP World plans to reduce the container free period from 8 days to 5, imposing charges of RM45 (20') and RM90 (40') per container. FMFF says the move is "premature, unfair, and unjustified" due to worsening yard and gate congestion, where haulers reportedly wait up to 6 hours inside the port. 'Customs clearance delays further compound the issue, making it nearly impossible to meet the new 5-day deadline. 'Added charges will increase import costs, ultimately burdening consumers in Sabah, where living costs are already high,' they said in a statement. OCM's RM97m Olympic House HQ set for 2028 completion
THE Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) has confirmed that its new headquarters, Olympic House, is on track for completion by 2028. The RM97 million project will commence construction by the end of this year, subject to approvals from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). OCM president Tan Sri Mohd Norza Zakaria stated that the project will unfold in two phases. The first phase focuses on the main building, while the second includes a banquet hall and hotel. 'We will do our best to ensure timely completion,' he said. A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for late July, following approval from Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. 'Once we receive DBKL's building approval, construction will begin immediately,' Norza added during the Olympic Day celebration at Bukit Jalil's National Stadium. The OCM is collaborating with the Malaysia Stadium Corporation (PSM) to accelerate the project. 'Phase one can be expedited through this strategic partnership,' Norza emphasized. Present at the event were PSM chairman Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz and OCM deputy president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad.
