
A Former Google Exec Takes Over Two Sonoma County Wineries

A former Google executive has added two popular Sonoma County wine companies to his growing roster of businesses. Overshine Collective has purchased Healdsburg's Reeve Wines and Sebastopol's Martha Stoumen Wines. The Press Democrat reports that Collective is a holding company for David Drummond, former senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer for Google parent company, Alphabet Inc. The Reeve Wines acquisition includes the subsidiary wine labels BloodRoot and Remy Saves the Sea plus music festival benefiting gun safety reform, the Ramble.
That said, joining the Overshine Collective — while a literal acquisition — includes equity options for the founders. Idlewild Wines founder Sam Bilbro, who also sold to the Overshine Collective, described it to the San Francisco Chronicle like tech companies buying each other and remaining independent brands. Drummond at the helm has also acquired Armida Winery, a 550-acre vineyard in the Russian River Valley, and debuted two wine brands, Overshine and Comunità.
Wine bar pro and coffee ace team up
One of the talents behind Nob Hill's Habibi bar, Bahman Safari, has moved the operation into its own location in the same neighborhood. Bar Bibi is set to open in the former Ristorante Milano space in August, per Tablehopper. A wine and dinner service will be dropping any day now. Bay Area barista and founder of pop-up Better Half Coffee Joshua Kaplowitz will run his operation inside the space, too. Treats for that daytime operation will come from Luis Villavelazquez's Bellaria.
Dubai chocolate gets a local vegan candy twist
Somewhat inevitable in the Bay Area, a vegan and gluten free riff on one of the internet's trendiest desserts has emerged. Richmond's Coracao chocolate — a longtime player in the region's plant-based chocolate game — just launched a Dubai chocolate bar. The pack of three arrives crowned in Santa Barbara pistachios and, rather than Kaitafe, crisped quinoa and toasted coconut to recreate that feature.
Two major wine country players link
The longtime favorite winery Ashes & Diamonds will host cuisine from the Sea Ranch Lodge in August. From Monday, August 18, through Sunday, August 31, the menu at the winery will come from produce grown at the lodge's coastal farm. Furthering the partnership, Ashes & Diamonds members will receive discounted rates on stays and farm tours.

'That startup would have been 350 developers in the past,' he told Bartlett in the interview, first reported by Business Insider. 'As a matter of fact, podcaster is going to be replaced.' Gawdat specifically warned that 'the end of white-collar work' will begin by the late 2020s, representing a fundamental shift in how society operates. Unlike previous technological revolutions that primarily affected manual labor, he argues this wave of automation will target educated professionals and middle-class workers who form the backbone of modern economies. The Egyptian-born tech whiz, who was a millionaire by age 29, believes this massive displacement will create dangerous levels of economic inequality. Without proper government oversight, AI technology will channel unprecedented wealth and influence to those who own or control these systems, while leaving millions of workers struggling to find their place in the new economy, according to Gawdat. Beyond economic concerns, Gawdat anticipates serious social consequences from this rapid transformation. 4 Gawdat says rapid advances in AI technology will soon threaten even highly skilled professions once thought immune from automation. AI Kills SEO As The Whole World Watches
Google is trying to be more like Netflix, not Blockbuster. But is this simple pivoting destroying the web? Or perhaps more accurately, putting traditional publishers in an untenable position? This week, we're seeing fairly robust coverage of additional declines in conventional Google search – you know, the kind where you enter a string of keywords, and look through resulting SERP pages to find what you want. We've been getting notified about this for some time now – how in the mad rush to build AI tools, Google is threatening its own dominant business, the business of keyword search. But now, it seems like the phrase 'Google apocalypse' has been freshly introduced, indicating a critical mass that will change the game for millions of users and businesses. 'Now that AI-generated summaries are being integrated into search results, anyone looking for information has less reason to click through to the websites where that information originates,' wrote Klaudia Jazwinska at the Columbia Journalism Review July 31, including estimates from Pew and other parties. 'For media publishers whose business models rely on referral traffic to bring them advertising revenue, this shift feels nothing short of catastrophic.' Other outlets have picked this up, too. There's even a story from NPR, an institution that is, in its own way, in the hot seat too. All of it is screaming the message that we will not be able to rely on time-tested methods in the new AI age. The Big Picture There are two ways to understand this sea change: you can look at the numbers, famously released by Pew and other parties, or you can try it for yourself. Go to Google, and put in a search phrase. You'll see the AI overview come up at the top, in plain English. If you asked a question, that question gets answered 'above the fold,' to use journalistic parlance. So why would you click into SERPs? Not too long ago, I wrote about another aspect of this – the billion-dollar business of Search Engine Optimization or SEO, and how it is giving way to Generative Engine Optimization or GEO. Basically, since the genAI tools are killing keyword search, they're also making that SEO work less relevant, which is devastating to businesses that have invested in things like keyword research. That brings us to where this change is felt most deeply: the news media. The Last Nail in the Coffin As for newspapers, magazines and community publications, these outlets have been under pressure ever since the days of the early Internet. It started with the mandate to move to a digital payment model, which nobody liked. A newspaper was made to be in print. News offices had trouble figuring out how to maintain revenue with digital subscriptions. Eventually, some of the top publications figured out SEO and related methods. They build the best digital payment systems they could. But blogging and alternative news sources made things tough. Now, AI is writing stories, and newsrooms are cutting staff. Fewer consumers are choosing to invest in local news. And without even the ability to garner click-throughs, it's anybody's guess what kind of skeletal news system will remain. I covered a Ted talk by a fellow named John Chesto who laid out all of this in a revealing way. Combine the existing death of news media with a dramatic change in Internet search architecture, and you have an apocalypse, indeed. The headline I used, AI Lacks Full Capacity to Replace Journalism, doesn't mean that new changes won't kill the institutions. It just means AI isn't quite there yet. Businesses are supposed to be able to pivot, to some extent. But they can't pivot at the speed of light. And no one should expect them too. We're having profound growing pains integrating powerful new technologies. It's not just newsrooms – from your local furniture store, to your neighbor's landscaping business, to a mid-level retailer: over 20-some years, everyone has learned to create an online footprint, one way or another, with Google search. It was already too monopolistic. But this rug pull could have drastic consequences. Stay tuned.

Another San Francisco Coffee Company Cashes Out

Philz Coffee will sell to Los Angeles-based private equity firm Freeman Spogli & Co. for $145 million. More troubling, employees holding common stock in the business will see their shares cancelled under the agreement. Mission Local reported the news after acquiring documents pertaining to the deal. The deal is expected to be confirmed on Friday, August 8. Ferry Building hero closes after 21 years An original Ferry Building restaurant closed on Thursday, July 31. Boulettes Larder was a proper flagship in the marketplace. Chef Amaryll Schwertner and partner and Lori Regis ran the restaurant and its adjoining, more casual Bouli Bar. The San Francisco Standard reported the news with no reason given for shuttering. Boulettes Larder opened in 2004 when the remodeled Ferry Building opened to the public. Schwertner's menu was beloved for its commitment to old-school farm-to-table cooking. Divisadero sports bar shutters Majorly popular corner bar the San Francisco Athletic Club closed on Sunday, August 3. There was no closure reason given for the 11-year-old bar, but in a farewell Instagram post ownership said it's been a hard road since the pandemic. The bar was one of Lower Pac Heights's mainstay beer hangs. A new operator has already secured the lease and plans to keep the location as a sports bar. Plant-based burgers hit South Tahoe In a positive upshot for the region, vegan burger joint Malibu's is expanding. This time, the restaurant is opening inside Cascade Kitchens Tahoe, a new food hall and commissary kitchen. In an Instagram teaser, ownership says the new space will be helmed as a franchise by a longtime customer of the buzzy Oakland restaurant.
