Pete Carroll Names Biggest Reason Why He Came Out of Retirement to Join Raiders
Pete Carroll Names Biggest Reason Why He Came Out of Retirement to Join Raiders originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis fired head coach Antonio Pierce at the beginning of the 2025 NFL offseason after a four-win season in 2024. In a corresponding move, he hired Super Bowl-winning head coach Pete Carroll to replace him.

Carroll made previous stops with the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. After 18 years as a head coach in the NFL, however, he spent the 2024 football season on the sidelines, not coaching.
However, he made his return with the Raiders and has spoken at length during the team's offseason program about how rejuvenated he is to be back. The 73-year-old is already making the most of what seems to be his final NFL head coaching gig.

On Thursday, Carroll broke his silence about why he decided to come out of retirement and join the Raiders. He revealed this information on an episode of the Get Got Pod with Marshawn Lynch and Mike Robinson.

"There was a little bit of interest you know, college too. There was some stuff going on back and forth. And the more I got around it, the more I felt the passion growing. The way I would say it, I was in the pursuit of my passion," Carroll said. "It has never been anything but fun. Fortunately, it worked out. You know, a couple of crazy things happened right around the end of it. But the Raiders thing when Tom [Brady] joined up, that really made a difference to me. That shifted my gears a little bit."
Brady entered the fold for the Raiders last fall when he bought a minority stake in the team. In his first offseason with the franchise, he has already laid a major claim in the team's personnel decisions.
He was integral in the hiring of Carroll, and signed off on the acquisitions of quarterbacks Geno Smith via trade and Cam Miller in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Carroll spent many years as the head coach of the Seahawks competing against Brady on both the Patriots and Buccaneers. During that time, Carroll clearly established a deep respect for Brady, as he was admittedly a key cog in getting Carroll to Las Vegas.

ESPN Analyst Reveals Two 'Problems' on Texas' 2025 Schedule
ESPN Analyst Reveals Two 'Problems' on Texas' 2025 Schedule originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Texas Longhorns lost one game in the regular season in their inaugural SEC campaign. However, ESPN's Joe Fortenbaugh was not convinced that it would happen again in 2025. He joined a recent "Get Up" episode to talk about SEC regular-season win totals. Advertisement The Longhorns have their win total at 10.5 on ESPN BET. Fortenbaugh thought that number was too high and pointed out the road games against the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs as "problems" on Texas' schedule. Texas played both teams in the 2024 regular season, beating the Gators 49-17 but losing to the Bulldogs 30-15. The Longhorns played the Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game and lost 22-19 in overtime. Texas mascot Bevo walks out of the tunnel Patzke-Imagn Images "I bet the under," Fortenbaugh said. "All we need are two losses. I see them losing to Ohio State to open the season, and then as you work your way down, there are plenty of problems. Road game at Florida. Road game at Georgia. Fourth-toughest schedule in the nation. So yea, I think this is a team that's very overvalued." Advertisement Both Florida and Georgia will have a different look to them in 2025. For the Bulldogs, quarterback Carson Beck is now with the Miami Hurricanes, and Gunner Stockton is expected to compete for the starting job in Athens. Florida will have its first full year with DJ Lagway starting at quarterback. Lagway played in 12 games last season with seven starts. Fortenbaugh was not particularly impressed with the 10.5 regular-season win total and called Texas the most overvalued team in college football. He even predicted the Longhorns would lose to the Ohio State Buckeyes in their season opener. The Longhorns begin the 2025 season against Ohio State on August 30. Kickoff is at noon ET on Fox. Big Aaron Rodgers Announcement Crushes Patriots' Dreams
Big Aaron Rodgers Announcement Crushes Patriots' Dreams originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots pass rush was the worst in the NFL last season, with just 28 sacks, placing them 32nd out of the 32 teams. But according to media speculation this week, New England could have one trade in mind to solve the problem. Advertisement New head coach Mike Vrabel has taken steps to upgrade the pass rush, but according to Patriots correspondent Jordy McElroy of USA Today Patriotswire, New England could seal the deal by targeting Pittsburgh Steelers seven-time Pro Bowl pick T.J. Watt in that trade. Aaron RodgersCredits to Imagin Watt will be entering the final season of his four-year, $112 million contract with the Steelers, and remains in a standoff with the team over a potential new deal. Without one, he becomes a free agent after the 2025 season — which makes his asking price in a trade probably more reasonable than it otherwise would be, if he were not on an expiring deal. Watt has led the NFL in sacks three times in his eight-year career. Last season was a "down" year for the 30-year-old linebacker, and he still piled up 11 1/2 sacks. Acquiring him could solve New England's pass rush problem overnight. Advertisement But speaking on ESPN's Pat McCaffee Show on Tuesday, new Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers made an announcement that in all likelihood crushes the Patriots' dreams of trading for Watt. "I'm pretty sure this is it. That's why we just did a one-year deal," the 20-year veteran and future Hall of Famer told McCaffee, confirming that he plans to retire after the 2025 campaign. "Steelers didn't need to put any extra years on that or anything. This was really about finishing with a lot of love and fun and peace for the career that I've had." How does that affect the Patriots? According to McElroy, with Rodgers in his final season, the Steelers seem unlikely to part with Watt. "Perhaps the Steelers are putting all of their chips on the table with the Rodgers signing and going all in for a final Super Bowl run," the Patriotswire scribe wrote on Wednesday. "If that's the case, they likely wouldn't be in the market for moving on from one of the best defensive players in the league." Advertisement With nearly $61 million in remaining cap space, Watt would not cause any financial issues for the Patriots. But Rodgers' retirement announcement appears to make it a moot point anyway. MLB Turns Heads With Ronald Acuna Jr. Post on Wednesday
MLB Turns Heads With Ronald Acuna Jr. Post on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When the Atlanta Braves closed out the 2024 regular season, they did so with an 89-73 mark, good for second place in the National League East, before falling 0-2 to the San Diego Padres in the NL Wild Card Series. Advertisement It was a familiar postseason fate for a franchise accustomed to deep October runs but only one World Series title to show for it since 1995. For much of the early 2025 campaign, fans waited for the return of Ronald Acuna Jr., who had missed the first 49 games recovering from his torn ACL. He finally rejoined the lineup on May 23, immediately showcasing the five-tool prowess that earned him National League MVP honors in 2023. In just 104 at-bats since his debut this season, Acuna has slugged nine home runs, 16 RBIs and 40 hits with a .385 batting average, .496 on-base percentage and .692 slugging percentage. Advertisement As Acuna continues to thrive on base, the MLB revealed on Wednesday that Acuna will be the first confirmed participant in the 2025 T-Mobile Home Run Derby, set for July 14 at Truist Park in Atlanta. Fans online instantly reacted to MLB's post. "Why did you post the winner so soon?" said one user. "Breaking: Ronald Acuna Jr announces he has won the home run derby*," another fan responded. "Let's gooooo Ronnie!" one other user replied. "How is it already over," said another commenter. "He's hitting bombs fs," responded one other user. "LETS GOOOO," another fan replied.
