The Silent Killer: What Really Happens If Endometriosis Is Left Untreated

The Silent Killer: What Really Happens If Endometriosis Is Left Untreated

India.com25-06-2025
Many still mistake endometriosis for 'bad period cramps.' But what starts as subtle pain can evolve into a dangerous, life-altering disease if left unchecked. Endometriosis doesn't just disrupt your cycle, it can damage organs, steal fertility, and affect your mental health for life. Dr Smeet Patel, Endometriosis Specialist at Mayflower Women's Hospital, Ahmedabad, reveals why early diagnosis and real treatment, not just hormonal suppression, are crucial.
The Progressive Nature of Endometriosis
"Endometriosis is not just a menstrual nuisance, it's a progressive, invasive disease," says Dr. Smeet Patel. It begins with mild discomfort and period pain but can quickly escalate into persistent pelvic and back pain, painful sex, neuropathic flares, and widespread symptoms that go well beyond menstruation.
It spreads silently, forming scar tissue (adhesions) that fuses organs together, sometimes pulling ovaries toward the pelvic wall or tethering the uterus to the rectum. Lesions aren't confined to reproductive organs; they may affect the bowel, bladder, ureters, and even reach as far as the diaphragm.
A Web of Symptoms You Can't Ignore
The symptoms often reflect the disease's invasive reach, painful urination (dysuria), painful bowel movements (dyschezia), and painful sex (dyspareunia). But the pain is not 'just in your head.'
Endometriosis rewires your nervous system. "The chronic inflammation causes central sensitisation," Dr. Patel explains. "This means your nerves become hypersensitive. It's neurological, not psychological." Left untreated, this hypersensitivity leads to intense, daily suffering.
Years of Silent Progression and Misdiagnosis
One of the most chilling aspects of endometriosis? It can slowly destroy your body for years before anyone realizes. "The average diagnosis takes 7 to 10 years," Dr. Patel says. During this time, irreversible fertility damage may occur—like blocked fallopian tubes or ovarian endometriomas, often discovered only during infertility evaluations.
Deep lesions can go unnoticed until they cause life-threatening complications—bowel obstructions, kidney swelling, and even cyclical lung or chest pain if they reach the diaphragm or lungs.
Treatment That Doesn't Treat the Root Cause
Hormonal therapies like birth control pills or GnRH agonists may ease symptoms, but they're not a cure. Dr. Patel warns, "They mask symptoms, allowing the disease to progress undetected. Long-term use can even cause bone loss and severe mood disorders."
Surgery, too, can backfire if not done correctly. 'Ablation-only' surgeries that burn surface lesions often cause more scar tissue and worsen the pain. The gold standard is complete laparoscopic excision by a specialist, but few women worldwide can access this care.
Beyond the Pelvis: Systemic Health Risks
Endometriosis is not just a reproductive disorder. It's a whole-body inflammatory condition. Chronic inflammation increases levels of cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-alpha), which are linked to autoimmune diseases and even heart disease.
Worse still, long-standing cases have been associated with increased risk of certain ovarian cancers, particularly clear cell and endometrioid subtypes.
The Psychological Toll: Trauma That's Often Overlooked
Living with chronic pain for years, being dismissed by doctors, and facing delays in treatment takes a serious emotional toll. 'Many patients develop anxiety, depression, and even PTSD,' Dr. Patel says. "The trauma of not being believed is real and lasting."
Women frequently report being gaslighted by healthcare providers, told it's 'normal,' or advised to 'just take a painkiller.' These dismissals create lasting mistrust in the medical system.
Why Early Diagnosis Is Everything
Hormonal suppression isn't a cure, it's a temporary mask. By the time symptoms become unbearable, the disease may have already done lasting damage. That's why it's crucial to listen to patients early, take their pain seriously, and pursue proper diagnostics.
Final Word: Don't Ignore the Early Signs
If you, or someone you love, suffers from severe menstrual pain, chronic pelvic aches, or unusual digestive or urinary symptoms, don't wait. Endometriosis doesn't slow down. Left untreated, it can impact every aspect of life: fertility, organ function, and mental well-being.
Early diagnosis and proper excision surgery can drastically change outcomes. Believe women. Advocate for better care. Because when it comes to endometriosis, ignorance isn't just harmful, it can be deadly.

NMC Yet To Decide On Freezing Approvals For New Medical Colleges: Govt To Rajya Sabha

Last Updated: Anupriya Patel, stated in a written reply that the NMC uses a structured and transparent process to evaluate and approve applications for medical college seats. The government informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has not decided to freeze approvals for new medical colleges or increase MBBS seats for the academic year 2025-26, based on information from the NMC, reported PTI. In a written reply, Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel stated that the NMC has implemented a systematic and transparent process to evaluate and approve applications related to seats in medical colleges and institutions. Listing the steps taken by the medical commission, Patel explained that each year, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC invites applications exclusively via an online portal for establishing new medical colleges or institutions offering undergraduate courses, increasing the number of UG seats in existing institutions, starting new postgraduate courses, or increasing PG seats in existing courses as per sections 28 and 29 of the NMC Act, 2019, and the provisions of the 'Establishment of Medical institutions, Assessment and Rating Regulations 2023'. Institutions can submit their applications only if they meet the requirements outlined in the Minimum Standard Requirements issued by the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) or the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB), as applicable, Patel noted. 'Upon receiving an application, the MARB conducts preliminary scrutiny and in case of deficiencies, a show cause notice (SCN) is issued to the concerned college, allowing them to address and rectify the issues," she said. The assessment of medical colleges is conducted by a randomly chosen group of expert assessors to ensure objectivity and impartiality, Patel added. Moreover, Section 14 of the Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment and Rating Regulations 2023, states that for assessment purposes, the MARB may employ methods such as digital or other forms of document verification, Aadhaar-based attendance registers, verification of live video feeds, photographs, Hospital Management Information System data, or unannounced physical assessments. These assessments are reviewed by report scrutinizers and experts. If additional shortcomings are found, the institution is issued an SCN in accordance with the proviso to subsection (3) of Section 28 of the NMC Act, granting another opportunity for compliance. A Letter of Permission is granted only to those institutions that fully comply with all relevant provisions of the NMC Act 2019 and the regulations and guidelines issued by the Commission from time to time, Patel concluded. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ozone Therapy: How This Cutting-Edge Treatment Boosts Immunity and Oxygen Efficiency

Last Updated: Ozone therapy is emerging as a versatile medical intervention with multiple benefits from improving oxygen utilization and modulating immunity and supporting tissue recovery Ozone therapy is an innovative medical treatment that involves administering ozone gas (O₃), a colorless molecule made of three oxygen atoms into the body to support healing and treat various conditions. Though it might sound unusual, research and clinical experience have highlighted its benefits in reducing inflammation, improving oxygen utilization, modulating immunity, and even targeting harmful microbes. Deepak Pal, Sports & Functional Nutritionist, SENS Clinic shares everything you need to know: 1. Mild, Controlled Oxidative Stress When ozone comes into contact with biological fluids, it reacts with lipids, proteins, and other molecules, producing reactive byproducts known as ozonides. These molecules create a brief oxidative challenge, triggering the body's natural antioxidant defense system. Enzymes like superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase are upregulated, strengthening the body's resilience against chronic oxidative damage. This process, known as hormesis, allows the body to adapt and defend itself more effectively. 2. Improved Oxygen Utilization Ozone therapy also enhances oxygen delivery to tissues. By interacting with red blood cell membranes, ozone increases levels of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-BPG), a molecule that helps release oxygen from hemoglobin. This shift allows oxygen to be delivered more efficiently to low-oxygen areas of the body, such as ischemic tissues, supporting recovery and overall cellular function. 3. Immune Modulation Unlike typical immune-boosting treatments, ozone therapy can both enhance and regulate immune function. It stimulates the production of cytokines like IL-2, TNF-alpha, and interferon-gamma, helping the body fight infections while preventing excessive immune activity that may occur in autoimmune conditions. This dual action has led many experts to classify ozone therapy as an immune modulator rather than a simple booster. 4. Antimicrobial Effects Ozone is a potent antimicrobial agent. It can directly disrupt microbial cell walls and viral capsids, interfere with microbial metabolism, and damage nucleic acids, making it difficult for pathogens to survive. Healthy human cells, fortified with strong antioxidant defenses, are less affected, allowing the therapy to selectively target harmful organisms. 5. Enhanced Microcirculation and Nitric Oxide Production Ozone therapy improves blood flow by enhancing red blood cell flexibility and stimulating nitric oxide release in the endothelium. This improves microcirculation, supports oxygen delivery, and accelerates healing in conditions like diabetic ulcers, poor circulation, and sports injuries. Ozone therapy is emerging as a versatile medical intervention with multiple benefits from improving oxygen utilization and modulating immunity to targeting harmful microbes and supporting tissue recovery. While it is not a replacement for conventional treatments, when administered under medical supervision, ozone therapy offers a safe and scientifically grounded approach to enhancing overall health and resilience. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
