Over a third of adults between the ages of 50 and 80 feel lonely, according to a 2024 national study in JAMA. More specifically, they feel a lack of companionship 'some of the time' or 'often.' Many women over 50 struggle with loneliness too, for many reasons. They may be experiencing a role change after the loss of a spouse or after their children move out. They may have free time they aren't used to after retiring, or find that their friends don't have as much time to hang out.These women may also face new health challenges, such as menopause. Did you know that menopause can actually exacerbate feelings of loneliness? A 2022 study in Perspectives in Psychiatric Care found that loneliness increases when menopausal symptoms increase. This could be due to feeling alone in the experience and overwhelmed by it. It could also be the fact that hormonal fluctuations can lead to mood swings, and lower estrogen can lead to a lesser need to nurture others. That's all to say that if you're a woman who's 50 years old or older, and you feel alone, you're far from it.Just knowing statistics like that can be helpful sometimes. Interacting with other 50+ women in your area is a great way to see you're not alone. Some examples of clubs or activities where you might find these people include 'Women Over 50' Meetup groups or through Stitch (a social community for this population). There are also great side hustles for women over 50, such as consulting and tutoring, and 'slow living' hobbies for women over 50, such as pottery, photography and puzzles. That's only a start.'Consider an activity you used to enjoy, such as dancing or crafting, or trying something new, like a dinner club or a walking group, to meet like-minded people,' says Mandolin Moody, LMSW, a private practice therapist with Gateway to Solutions who helps adults improve their connections with themselves and others.The idea may seem intimidating at first, but before you know it, it'll just be an hour of chatting with new friends and having fun.Related: Goodbye, Boredom! 125 Hobbies To Pick Up in 2025
When you're feeling lonely, gratitude may be the last thing on your mind. As relatable and understandable as that is (and while it has its place), it's not necessarily the most helpful thing to avoid. 'Gratitude and other compassion practices have been proven to increase a shared sense of common humanity and decrease loneliness,' Moody says.That might look like thinking about the relationships you're thankful for or giving money to an unhoused person who hasn't been so lucky.'By connecting to the expansiveness of the human experience, we can offer more compassion toward ourselves and the world as a whole,' Moody adds.Related:
On the note of gratitude and compassion, volunteering can help you realize what you have to be thankful for and provide an avenue for spreading love. 'Volunteering is an opportunity to connect with others who share similar passions, build a sense of purpose and engage in your values in a tight-knit community,' Moody says.
In today's day and age, connecting with people is much easier. If you can't see them in person, they're just a few clicks away. 'While many loved ones may have moved away or grown distant, we have the advantage of social media, cell phones and other digital ways of connecting with friends and family,' Moody says. Moody says many individuals find online communities, forums and social media pages to be supportive and positive outlets. Just search phrases like 'women over 50' or 'women who [insert hobby]' on Facebook or Reddit.
Maybe your loved ones are busy or asleep, or you're feeling lonely but not in the mood to talk to anyone. Reading or listening to stories online—like an article about how an Apple Watch saved a man's life, or a podcast episode where a celebrity opens up—may be the answer you're seeking.'Engaging in personal storytelling about unique lived experiences can foster a sense of connection to the broader human experience,' Moody says.Related:
Is there a spot on your bucket list you've yet to travel to? Or maybe you're interested in a local community or city a couple of counties over? Or you're curious about another religion and want to visit one of their services? Whatever it is, make plans to make it happen.'Find ways to connect with others from different backgrounds as a way to feel engaged in a new community,' Moody encourages.
Consider comforting yourself with memories and by bringing your brain to a time when you were with loved ones. Moody encourages doing this by telling a story (it could be to another person, in a journal or just out loud), or crafting, like scrapbooking with photos and mementos.'Nostalgia can be a helpful emotion in reducing loneliness and increasing gratitude,' she explains. 'Preserving memories through scrapbooks and photo albums is a simple yet effective way to relive past memories and reconnect with cherished feelings.'Plus, did you know that crafting and creativity benefit mental health? A 2024 study in Frontiers in Public Health found they increase life satisfaction, a sense that life is worthwhile and happiness. You don't need to experience 'serious troubles' to seek individual therapy or group therapy. Talking to someone (or multiple someones) can be healing and provide connection, especially if you don't get it in many other ways. 'A therapist can offer support and tools to help combat loneliness and reconnect with your sense of purpose,' Moody shares. 'Many people find support groups and other communities helpful for bonding over shared experiences, as well.'Need help finding the right fit? Psychology Today has an online database with therapists, psychiatrists, treatment centers and support groups you can filter through.Your feelings of loneliness are valid, *and* they don't have to be something you feel every day, all day. We've got everything you need to reader and psychic medium Mystic Michaela (AKA Megan Firester) has been helping people understand their auras for years. As she puts it, an aura is the "energy signature" that surrounds a person. She describes it as "a personality type, but on a much deeper level." She says your aura essentially introduces you "not only to anybody around you, but also to the universe itself." Auras can present themselves as one or more colors, visualized by aura readers like you don't yet know what your aura is, it's pretty simple to find out. "Once you read something and it resonates, you can pretty much bet that's your color," she what if your aura color is purple? But there are also shades of purple within that aura. She says intensely purple auras are what she calls "hot mess purple." She characterizes this type as impulsive or chaotic, saying that many reality TV stars are often this shade. There's also a light purple or lavender shade that Michaela sees as more "ethereal-minded or connected or calm." She adds, "All the auras have different shades and they do signify different energies moving through you."There are also a lot of struggles and challenges that people with a purple aura can experience, but knowing that you have that color aura can help. "Auras don't just show you who you are, but also what energies you may require to feel more comfortable," Michaela Michaela believes that you're born with your aura, and it stays the same throughout your life. But she says she does see auras change in texture, balance and hue throughout someone's life, or even just on a daily basis. "Your core aura colors really don't change," she shares. "But living life, it comes with so many situations and traumas and societal expectations that can impact your aura colors."Sometimes she sees people with purple auras essentially hiding it. "When they're not comfortable in themselves, [they] kind of push it down or push it away," she says. She adds that sometimes she'll also see people with "inauthentic aura colors... they wear colors that aren't theirs—just to get by."She adds that sometimes teenagers show "a lot of purple in that age range," for According to Michaela, there are several personality traits associated with the purple aura. She says they're often creative and artistic, as well as naturally intuitive. "They just kind of lean on gut feelings as logic," she says. She adds that those with purple auras are often not very judgmental and, as a result, can have an eccentric friend group with many types of people in it. She says it's also very common for those with purple auras to "hate being told what to do," which is part of their rebellious nature. Michaela says that all auras have a spiritual connection, but they connect in different ways. For purple, she says that connection is very intuitive. "They know immediately what's happening with somebody without a lot of explanation," she says."I think purples just have a wilder connection to the other side," she adds. "And the thing with purples is they don't need to prove it." She explains that purple auras are more likely to trust and believe someone or something, which is why they operate on gut feelings."Whatever you want to call it on the other side... spirit guides, angels, the universe—they love it when you just accept it... so it's an easier connection," Michaela One of the biggest things Michaela cautions those with purple auras to pay attention to is their mental health. "I notice that purples do have a hard time with mental health problems more than other aura colors," she says, adding that purples may also experience addiction issues more than other at the same time, she says that those with purple auras can potentially work their way out of some problems where other aura colors may struggle to do so. "They're more adaptable to change," she says of those with purple is why Michaela thinks it's so important to know your aura color, because you know what to watch out for and also how to potentially navigate it. When it comes to dating and relationships, Michaela thinks those with purple auras need to be discerning. "As a purple, you draw them in... you get a lot of attention, you get a lot of dates, you get a lot of people," she says. "The problem is, you might not like all those people. You need to really trust your filter... You have to be a little bit more picky, because purples tend to also let things slide a lot." She also cautions that people with purple auras, because of their intuitiveness, may try too hard to be and say what they think the other person wants. "Showing up authentically as you from day one is the best way to approach any relationship," she advises instead. "Just be you, because a lot of times you can't hide the purple." She adds that people with purple auras should be "upfront" about their non-negotiables and what they do and don't want out of a relationship. "[Be] firm in that," she Michaela says that a purple's "free spirit" means that they might have a "hard time with a nine-to-five job... or working traditionally." She recommends that they lean into their creative nature to find a career that maybe lets them work from home or travel, versus getting a standard in-office job."A lot of times with purples, they're in creative atmospheres and creativity can be different things," she explains. "I see purples as graphic artists. I see purples as writers. I see purples as singers and entertainers." She adds that she also thinks that they could thrive in an ever-changing environment, like managing a fast-paced restaurant."[They] do really well in chaotic environments... because they can think on their feet," Michaela says. When it comes to managing their finances, those with purple auras can be just as chaotic with money as they can be with their work. "They do have a hard time with financial planning," she says, because they tend to live more in the moment with a "life's short" mentality."They're spontaneous. So spending the money can be part of that as well," she says. "They don't like to tell themselves no either." That means they may be more likely to spend money on last-minute trips and such. "Purples are impulsive and, man, that makes them fun," Michaela acknowledges. "But it is very hard... overall, purples can struggle with self-destruction."But, as with all of the purple traits and potential challenges, knowledge is power. Michaela thinks that "purples have a much easier time also understanding what their problems are.
