Bury offer Morecambe fans free tickets as club closure looms
Morecambe were originally set to play their first game of the season in the National League this weekend against Boston United, though they were suspended from the league in July and now face the prospect of closing down due to financial difficulties.
Bury faced a similar situation in 2019, when they were expelled by the EFL in August 2019 despite winning promotion to League One that season. The club re-formed under the Bury FC and currently compete in the Northern Premier League West, the eighth tier of English football.
Bury announced that Morecambe fans can gain free entry to this weekend's game by showing their season ticket or 'wearing your Morecambe FC badge with pride'.
'We at Bury Football Club have watched with great sympathy and understanding as you navigate uncertain times. As a club that knows all too well what it feels like to face challenges off the pitch, we want you to know: you are not alone,' said a statement on the Bury website.
'As a gesture of solidarity and footballing friendship, we invite all Morecambe supporters to join us at Gigg Lane on Saturday, 9 August, for our home match.
'Whether you're in need of a temporary football fix, a place to feel connected, or simply want to enjoy a matchday with fellow fans who understand—our gates and hearts are open to you,' it added.
Morecambe owner Jason Whittingham's failure to sell the club means that Morecambe face the prospect of shutting their doors, with Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy writing an open letter urging Whittingham to 'do the right thing' and sell.
"It is the Government's firm view that owners need to act as custodians of their clubs," Nandy said. 'With so much at stake for this grand old town, the time for action is now. I call on you to effect a sale to a suitable owner, and give the club a chance for a brighter future."
The Panjab Warriors sports investment group insists it is ready to take over the club, and last week it issued a statement alongside fans' group the Shrimps Trust and local MP Liz Collinge stating that all first-team operations had stopped after insurance cover lapsed.

Airport gets football practice started at earliest possible minute
CARLETON – Football coaches are famous for losing sleep over the game they love. They fret about injuries, the next opponent, their players doing the right thing and many other things. There is one day Derek Anderson doesn't mind losing sleep. The second-year head coach has started a new tradition at Airport. As they did last fall, the Jets opened practice at the earliest possible moment allowed by Michigan High School Athletic Association rules. 2025 High School Football Schedules: Bedford football makes history by hosting foe from Massachusetts Airport took the field at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 11. 'It's a great way to start the season,' Anderson said. 'We're going to be doing this as long as I am coaching. Some of these guys will not be playing when their four years (of high school) are up. I want to give them as much of a football experience as I can. 'This is something they will still be talking about when they get into their upper 20s.' The midnight practice is an experience the players seem to enjoy. 'This is a new tradition,' said senior quarterback Dillon Byrd. 'It's really cool.' 'I love it,' added senior receiver-defensive back Aidyn Stahr. 'It's so awesome. There is a lot of energy.' 'It's a chance to bond and start the season right,' said defensive back Ryan Hildebrand. In addition to the energy and bonding created by the unique practice time, Airport also was able to beat the heat. It was about 80 degrees when the workout began and temperatures dropped as the workout progressed. The thermometer was forecast to climb near 90 degrees later in the day. 'There's still no air moving anywhere, but the temperatures are not as bad,' Anderson said. That allows everyone to focus a little more.' Airport had an up and down first season under Anderson, who returned as the head coach of his alma mater with a 4-5 record. The Jets started with four straight losses, won four in a row, then dropped their finale. 'We're very young and inexperienced,' Anderson said of the 2025 squad, which features five returning starters on offense and three on defense. 'We will rely on a lot of juniors. We definitely are more experienced on the offensive side.' Byrd threw for 1,005 yards last fall with Stahr hauling in 27 passes for 345 yards. 'This year we will be a lot better,' Byrd said. 'We have a lot of threats and skills. We will be a problem for people.' 'We'll be dangerous,' Stahr added. 'A lot of guys have put in a lot of work.' Stahr and Hildebrand, both defensive backs, are two of the three returning starters on defense. 'We have talent here and a lot of seniors who are hungry,' Hildebrand said. Hill eyeing changes after another bad day for Daisy
Daisy Hill are still searching for their first league win of the season in the North West Counties League after going down 2-1 at Ashton Town on Saturday. After Daniel Squires put Ashton ahead midway through the first half, Chad Whyte levelled for Daisy four minutes before half time to send the sides in level at the break. But within a minute of the restart, Noah Inneh struck what proved to be the winner for the home side, and Daisy manager Lee Hill felt afterwards that luck was not on their side over the course of the 90 minutes. 'It was a scrappy game and I think the draw would probably have been a fairer result,' said Hill. 'It was close-fought, could have gone either way, but didn't fall our way, and you can use all the clichés, but when you're struggling for confidence that's what happens. 'It's really difficult to understand why the ball doesn't drop for us, but sometimes it's just the way the way it goes. 'We were getting into good areas, but probably lacking sharpness still, and that little bit of confidence to go at defenders and cause them problems. 'We were going to make a change at half time, but gave the lads the benefit of the doubt to give them a few minutes in the second half. We conceded after 40 seconds, so we made the change straight away, with Lee Grimshaw coming on. 'We are three games in and even though we haven't sort of really hit the form we are capable of, it's still narrow margins that stopped us from picking up more points. 'But these are the games that we targeted to win, against teams that we expect are going to be in around the middle of the table. These were teams where we dropped points last season and we're doing the same again. 'We'll look at making some changes for next weekend. We are three games in, no win, one point from nine so we've got to look at changes.' The game was evenly-contested right from the off, and Daisy had an early scare when a clearance from goalkeeper Morgan Newns was charged down by Ashton's Adam Morris, but the full-back rushed his shot and fired over. Daisy's best chance came a few minutes later when Kaiden Barlow found space on the edge of the box and attempted to play Whyte in on goal but overhit the pass. On 21 minutes, Ashton took the lead when a right-wing cross from Michael Grogan deceived attackers and defenders alike when it bounced awkwardly, but Ashton striker Squires reacted quickly to stoop low and head the ball past Newns from close range. Daisy hit back, and looked to have booked their way back into the game five minutes later when Jacob Ridings was tripped in the box by Ashton's Will Hamilton. Jake O'Brien stepped up to take the penalty but was denied by a fine save from Ashton keeper Kyle Trenerry, who dived low to his left to push the ball away for a corner. When the kick came in, Trenerry was in action again, this time tipping over a header from Gary Basterfield. But four minutes from half time, Daisy were level and Basterfield was involved once more, with a deep cross into the box that was helped on by Barlow into the path of Whyte, who had the simple task of side-footing home at the far post. However, within 40 seconds of the start of the second half, Ashton regained the lead, when a ball out to the right wing found Hamilton in space, and he cut into the box and drove a low shot across the face of goal that was turned in by the unmarked Inneh. Daisy introduced Lee Grimshaw to increase the firepower up front, and on the hour mark, he collected a flick from Whyte and attempted to lob a shot over the Ashton keeper that missed the target. At the midway point of the half, Liam Sheppard teed up Regan Brown for a 20-yard shot that flew just wide, and a minute later a Charlie Roberts corner hit the bar and rebounded to safety as Daisy began to put on some pressure. As the game moved into the closing minutes, Daisy were always vulnerable to the quick counter attack as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser, and they got lucky when a quick break set up a shooting chance for Ashton substitute Michael Howard, but he missed the target form 10 yards with only Newns to beat. In the closing seconds of the game, Basterfield was shown a red card for a challenge on Inneh, and in the ensuing aftermath, Ashton's Alexandre Santos was also dismissed. Daisy are back in action on Saturday in the North West Counties League First Division North, when they travel to Merseyside to face league new boys MSB Woolton.

No. But should we expect them to after four new arrivals slotting into the starting line-up? No. The reality is that it will take time for Arne Slot to get this new phase two of Liverpool right. Things are not just going to be perfect from day one. It's important to note Liverpool are not done in the transfer window either. There will be a new centre-back coming in and Alexander Isak should ultimately end up at Anfield. He may not have meant his goal, but he scored it anyway. No one can take the fact away from him that has now scored on his Liverpool debut. But it was more than just the goal. It's quite clear that Frimpong is more than just a full-back, he's an attacking threat. Someone who is also ready to play further up the pitch when required. We saw that in pre-season, and he confirmed it against Palace with his performance. Frimpong can be a winger, too. He is an option to play there behind Mohamed Salah. You can tell from his speed and the way he takes players on and makes an impact in the final third that he could easily make the difference going forward. He's just done that at Wembley, and that pretty much confirms he's ready to take the mantle on from Salah, when he goes to AFCON later this season. It's also more confirmation of just how smart of a deal this was from Liverpool. Let's not forget, Anfield Watch understands Liverpool signed Frimpong for just £29m. That's a complete bargain for a player who not only replaces Trent Alexander-Arnold but also provides much-needed cover for Salah, something Liverpool pretty much haven't had in several seasons. Frimpong is a special player. He's the extra weapon Slot has been crying out for, and he's also the injection of energy and speed that Liverpool lacked last summer. Not to mention he doesn't shirk away from his defensive duties either. Frimpong very much stood up to the challenge against Palace. None of the chances the Reds conceded were coming from his side. Liverpool could not have asked for a better player, they could not have asked for a better signing. At 24-years-old, Frimpong is made for this team.
