Des Moines man found guilty of fatally shooting man in hotel
DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man was found guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting death of a man at a hotel last year.
A year ago, on April 10, officers with the Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at a hotel in the 1800 block of Army Post Road. When officers arrived at the hotel, they found two men inside suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the men, identified as 30-year-old Sayvon Propps, died at the scene. The second man, 31-year-old Joshua Carmody, was hospitalized in critical condition.
Suspect in shooting that injured 1 in Fort Dodge arrested
In May 2024 DMPD announced that Carmody had been arrested and charged with Propps' death. Police said Carmody had forced his way into a hotel room that was occupied by Propps and a woman. Evidence collected showed that Propps fired at Carmody in self-defense and then Carmody returned fire, fatally shooting Propps.
According to the Polk County Attorney's Office, the woman in the hotel room testified during trial that she and Carmody had been in an on-and-off relationship for a year, and that Carmody had been upset that she was with Propps and had been repeatedly trying to contact her.
On Friday, a Polk County Jury found Carmody guilty of first-degree murder for Propp's death. He was also convicted of first-degree burglary and being a felon in possession of a firearm. A first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Victim injured in Des Moines apartment fire has died
DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man who was critically injured in an apartment fire on Tuesday morning has died. Just after 6 a.m. the Des Moines Police Department and Fire Department responded to an apartment fire in the 3700 block of 57th Street in the Merle Hay Neighborhood. Another grooming arrest for Indianola man who had EMT license suspended
INDIANOLA, Iowa — An Indianola man already facing grooming charges has been arrested again on the same charge in a separate case. Jeremy McCormick, 37, was arrested last week and charged with grooming, a Class D felony, following an investigation by the Indianola Police Department. He posted bond and is expected to be in court again on June 18th. The complaint filed in the case said police were contacted in April by the alleged victim, who claimed McCormick had offered them drinks while they were underage and offered to take them to Victoria's Secret 'to get something sexy.' DMPD seek help to find suspect in violent assault with a shoe The incidents happened during June and August of 2024, while the alleged victim was working for McCormick. The complaint said McCormick made the victim so uncomfortable that they stopped working for him. In January, he was charged with two counts of grooming after the Warren County Sheriff's Office investigated incidents allegedly involving two teen girls, ages 15 and 16. Criminal complaints claim he took them on a shopping trip to eastern Iowa, bought them underwear at Victoria's Secret, and asked for pictures of the teens wearing the items. Due to the charges, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services suspended his EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification. McCormick's trial on the first two grooming charges is scheduled for October 9th, 2025. DMPD seek help to find suspect in violent assault with a shoe
DES MOINES, Iowa — Police in Des Moines are asking for the public's help to find a suspect in a violent assault last month in the Highland Park neighborhood. Alice Dacken, 56, is being sought on active warrants for willful injury causing bodily injury, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson for the Des Moines Police Department. 'ICE Out' protest brings in hundreds in Des Moines Sgt. Parizek said she assaulted a victim at their home on May 5th, using a high-heeled shoe as a weapon. The 62-year-old victim suffered multiple injuries in the assault. Dacken is 5'3″ tall and weighs about 145 pounds.
