Investigation continues into fatal Des Moines motorcycle crash
DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department continues to investigate a deadly motorcycle vs. car crash that occurred Wednesday evening on the city's south side. Motorcyclist killed in crash with semi on Floyd County highway At around 6:30 p.m. the Des Moines Police Department and Des Moines Fire Department responded to a report of a motorcycle vs. car crash at the intersection of SW 9th Street and Luster Lane, near the Blank Park Zoo. According to the DMPD, the motorcyclist had died from their injuries at the scene before first responders arrived. The driver of the car suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The DMPD said there were two passengers in the car, but neither were injured. The names of those involved in the crash have not been released. The DMPD said the investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing. DMPD ends 30×30 initiative to comply with state law banning DEI
DES MOINES, Iowa — A bill signed by Governor Reynolds to remove DEI initiatives, policies, and programs is impacting law enforcement agencies in Des Moines, as the city announced it's withdrawing from a national initiative aimed at recruiting and retaining more women in law enforcement. To comply with House File 856, which was signed into law on May 27, Des Moines is eliminating its 30×30 program. A national initiative to improve and grow the representation of women in law enforcement. The Des Moines Police Department joined the initiative in late 2021, with the goal of growing women in police recruitment classes to 30% by 2030. The change comes just after the police department celebrated its most diverse class of recruits yet in 2024. Increasing the number of Asian, Black, and Hispanic officers and increasing bilingual officers on the force. Currently, the City of Des Moines said that the Des Moines Police Department has 43 sworn female officers, representing roughly 11% of sworn officers. Forecast: Mild temps and tiny rain chances City Manager Scott Sanders was unavailable for an on-camera interview on Wednesday, but did provide a list of answers to questions WHO 13 had about the change. When asked about the importance of diverse officers on the force to better serve the community, Sanders said, 'There are many important factors to our police department's success serving the Des Moines community. The top of that list is our officers and their passion for helping our residents and visitors. Whether responding to a call or building relationships in the community, it is our officers' collective goal to protect both lives and property for every member of our community to the best of their ability.' When asked about ensuring future law enforcement career opportunities are open to all individuals, Sanders said, 'The Des Moines police remains committed to providing an attractive workplace for all potential recruits, including women, as it also strives to be a welcoming employer to all officers who are qualified and dedicated to serving the Des Moines community.' When asked about the 30×30 initiative and the decision to withdraw, Sanders said, 'The DMPD's participation in the 30×30 initiative was a goal to increase the presence of women in the Des Moines Police Department. The discontinuation of the 30×30 program means that there will no longer be a hiring goal for the number of women hired by Des Moines Police to comply with state law.' ‘Suspicious package' found near Federal Building shuts down downtown DSM road
UPDATE: The DMPD announced that the suspicious packaged was not an explosive or other dangerous device and that it has been turned over to the Federal Protective Service for further investigation. Walnut Street has been reopened to traffic. ORIGINAL STORY: DES MOINES, Iowa — A downtown Des Moines road is closed as the Des Moines Police Department conducts a suspicious package investigation. Motorcyclist killed in crash with semi on Floyd County highway According to the DMPD, shortly before 12:30 p.m. the Federal Protective Service reported that a 'suspicious package' had been placed outside of the Neal Smith Federal Building near a sidewalk. The DMPD said its bomb squad is on scene and that there's no indication of immediate danger to the area. Walnut Street between 2nd Avenue to 3rd Street will remain shut down until the investigation is completed. Additional information will be released when made available. Des Moines man guilty of fatally shooting man at hotel sentenced to prison
DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man who was found guilty of shooting and killing a man at a hotel last year was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday. In April 2024, officers with the Des Moines Police Department responded to a shooting at a hotel on the southwest side of the city. When first responders arrived, they found 30-year-old Sayvon Propps and 32-year-old Joshua Carmody in a hotel room suffering from gunshot wounds. Carmody was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Propps died from his injuries at the scene. Change of venue granted for embattled Madison County Treasurer, upcoming trial moved to Boone County As the investigation into the shooting unfolded, officers learned that Carmody had forced his way into the hotel room that Propps and a female were staying in. According to the DMPD, Propps fired a gun at Carmody in self-defense and Carmody returned fire. Carmody was later charged with first-degree murder for Propps' death. According to the Polk County Attorney's Office, during the first-degree murder trial the female who was at the hotel with Propps testified, saying that she and Carmody had been in an on-and-off relationship for about a year. She also stated that Carmody was upset when he discovered that she and Propps were at the hotel together. In April, a Polk County jury found Carmody guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. At a sentencing hearing held on Tuesday a Polk County Judge ordered Carmody to serve concurrent sentences of life in prison for the first-degree murder charge, 25 years for burglary charge, and five years for the possession of a firearm charge. Chase suspect bitten by K9 after running from stolen truck, DMPD says
DES MOINES, Iowa — Police said a K9 helped them capture a Des Moines man who led officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen truck Tuesday night. Des Moines Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek said the chase began around 10:39 p.m. when police tried to pull over a pickup truck for an equipment violation at SW 9th St. and Leach Ave. There was a short chase that ended at SE 4th St. and E. Phillip St., where the driver bailed and ran. Sgt. Parizek said a K9 tracked the driver down, but he was non-compliant and was bitten on the arm by the K9. Zachary Rich, 35, suffered minor injuries. He was taken into custody and is being held in the Polk County Jail. Construction is halfway complete on new Des Moines airport terminal Rich is facing multiple charges, including first-degree theft, second-degree theft, eluding, reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as traffic citations. Court records show that at least one of the charges is connected to a May 10th chase involving a different stolen vehicle. Rich was able to elude the police at that time.
