Photos show skid marks left from over 100 cars street racing in Newton

Photos show the aftermath of what police say was a street racing incident involving more than 100 cars on a popular road in Newton. WBZ-TV's helicopter captured skid marks that were still visible days later in Newton Centre. Police say that residents reported the street racing on Beacon Street and Centre Street just after 12 a.m. on Sunday. "Numerous NPD [Newton Police Department] units responded to Newton Centre for a report of over 100 cars in the area driving erratically, street racing* and burning tires," the Newton Police said in a Facebook post on Thursday. Several drivers were cited after being stopped by officers, but most fled the scene. Police said that this is not common for the area. "This driving behavior is dangerous!" Newton Police said online. Anyone who suspects that people may be street racing near them should call 617-796-2123. Police ask that if it is an emergency, call 911. A similar incident was reported in neighboring Boston last year. Around 40 cars were seen drag racing in Boston's Back Bay in April of 2024, according to police. They were caught on camera speeding down one-way streets and doing donuts in intersections. Residents in the area said that the smell and sounds disturbed them early in the morning, just after 2 a.m. Police said that when they arrived, they were attacked with glass bottles, fireworks, and the streets were blocked off.

Iowa NASCAR Cup Series race tops national weekend sports viewership

Viewership for the NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway decreased from 2024, but it was still the most-watched sporting event of the weekend. The Iowa Corn 350, aired nationwide Sunday, Aug. 3, on USA Network, owned by Comcast subsidiary NBC Universal, drew an average of 2.2 million viewers over its broadcast period, according to NBC Sports public relations. That is the second-most in the last 10 Cup Series races, according to NBC Sports. William Byron was the winner at Newton's Iowa Speedway, outlasting runner-up Chase Briscoe. It was the most-watched sporting event of the weekend, according to NBC Sports Public relations, easily outpacing Saturday's heavily promoted Speedway Classic baseball matchup between the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. The ultimately rain-delayed game, which was completed Sunday, drew an average of 1.78 million viewers, according to ABC News. Despite the strong showing, the number of viewers for the 2025 edition of the Corn 350 dropped from 2.69 million viewers on USA Network during its first edition in 2024. Drag group promotes artists' rights as Florida AG demands info on Pride event

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Florida's Republican Attorney General James Uthmeier is demanding guest lists, surveillance footage and personal information from people who attended a drag Pride event in Vero Beach on June 29, according to Scott Simpson, organizer for Qommittee, a national volunteer network defending drag artists' rights. The group says that no laws were violated in the event, and Florida's statewide "drag ban" has been blocked by federal courts. But state officials are "weaponizing existing laws to bully, intimidate, and surveil our community," Simpson said. Simpson's group has publicized Floridians' rights and called for organizing. "This is serious government overreach designed to intimidate drag performers into silence," he said. "They want performers to stop performing. They want venues to stop booking drag shows. They want our community to stop gathering and celebrating who we are. "Going to a drag show should not mean you forfeit your anonymity or land your name in a government database," Simpson said. "We cannot let that happen. Every drag performer and venue in Florida must stay loud, stay proud, and protect themselves while continuing their art." This isn't the first attack on Vero Beach's drag community. Linda Moore, the vice mayor of Vero Beach, is being investigated by Uthmeier for a "Pride Tea Dance" held last month at the Kilted Mermaid, a wine bar she owns in the town on the Atlantic coast. But it's unclear what charges Moore might face and questions remain concerning Uthmeier's legal basis for the investigation. Uthmeier's office cited evidence that the event was promoted as being open to all ages and included sexualized adult performers who "wore revealing attire and burlesque outfits while interacting with the children." "In Florida, we don't sacrifice the innocence of children for the perversions of some demented adults," Uthmeier said in a statement. But Moore said the bar has hosted it for at least the past five years. "We have the event every year; it's our gay pride event, and it is all ages," Moore said. "It's a family-friendly event, and then once the drag show actually starts, we tell the parents who have small children that they can't stay for the show." Simpson's Qommittee website clarifies drag performers' rights and realities, as well as Florida's laws on drag shows open to all ages versus shows for adults only. It also tells performers how to protect themselves if they're targeted by government officials and to keep performing and keep showing up at drag shows. "This intimidation campaign wants us to self-censor out of fear," Simpson said. "We will not give them that victory."
