Chase suspect bitten by K9 after running from stolen truck, DMPD says

DES MOINES, Iowa — Police said a K9 helped them capture a Des Moines man who led officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen truck Tuesday night. Des Moines Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek said the chase began around 10:39 p.m. when police tried to pull over a pickup truck for an equipment violation at SW 9th St. and Leach Ave. There was a short chase that ended at SE 4th St. and E. Phillip St., where the driver bailed and ran. Sgt. Parizek said a K9 tracked the driver down, but he was non-compliant and was bitten on the arm by the K9. Zachary Rich, 35, suffered minor injuries. He was taken into custody and is being held in the Polk County Jail. Construction is halfway complete on new Des Moines airport terminal Rich is facing multiple charges, including first-degree theft, second-degree theft, eluding, reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as traffic citations. Court records show that at least one of the charges is connected to a May 10th chase involving a different stolen vehicle. Rich was able to elude the police at that time. Motorcycle crashes, fatalities down in Des Moines, DMPD reports

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department says motorcycle crashes in Des Moines are down, along with injuries and fatalities. It's Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the Des Moines Police Department is reminding the community that with warmer weather, motorcyclists are back on the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA, reported that 6,335 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2023. This represented 15% of all traffic fatalities and was an increase of 1.3% from 2022. Campers begin Memorial Day weekend celebrations The DMPD reports that their data shows motorcycle crashes in Des Moines decreased from 131 in 2023 to 106 in 2024. Fatalities in Des Moines also went down from six in 2023 to five in 2024. WHO 13's Adrianna Torres spoke with the Des Moines PD in April about the importance of watching your mirrors and speed on the road. 'It's time to start sharing the road. Need to get ourselves in that mindset of looking a little bit closer because those motorcycles much lower profile than a car,' DMPD Sgt. Paul Parizek said. 'We also tell the motorcyclists that it's going to take a minute before they realize, hey, motorcycles are back on the streets. They also need to make sure that they keep their speed and their driving behaviors in a safe fashion, because a lot of these crashes that we see with motorcycles, excessive speed is a major contributor.' NHTSA shared these tips that both drivers and motorcyclists can use to stay safe on the road. Observing all traffic laws and obeying the speed limit. Yielding to motorcyclists, especially when drivers are turning at intersections. Wearing high-visibility protective gear and DOT compliant motorcycle helmets while riding. Completing a motorcycle rider education and training course. Avoiding distractions while driving or riding. Driving and riding alcohol- and drug-free. Riders can learn more about motorcycle safety and being road-ready at the NHTSA website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. In unusual crime: Des Moines police investigating four ATM thefts this year

Des Moines police are investigating a recent spate of ATM thefts this year. Four machines have been stolen from a variety of businesses in 2025. Like most burglaries, the thefts are difficult to investigate since offenders took efforts to conceal their identity and avoid detection, said police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek. They've been committed at night and offenders have covered their faces and worn gloves. Detectives have suspects in these ongoing investigations but no arrests have been made as of May 15. Typically, suspects have used stolen vehicles to force entry into a business or pull the 1,000-pound ATM free from its mounted position and then haul it away, Parizek said. It's not the first time Des Moines police have had to investigate ATM thefts: Two men were arrested for using explosives to rob ATMs in Des Moines in November 2023. Authorities alleged the two men stole at least $60,000 in cash around Des Moines. That was the first time the Des Moines Police Department saw criminals use explosives to dismount an ATM, Parizek said at the time. More recently, a driver plowed through the windows that enclosed the game room at The Dam Pub, the quirky eatery with an '80s and '90s theme in Beaverdale at 2710 Beaver Ave. early in the morning March 1. The vehicle occupants stole the ATM from inside the restaurant, according to the restaurant's owners. Later that morning, the restaurant was filled with diners ordering brunch at the bar and in booths while a handyman cleaned up the glass and made temporary repairs to the front façade of the building. Co-owner Renee Way said she was shocked when she found out people had stolen the restaurant's ATM. At first Way and her husband thought it was just an accident because a driver who had a medical emergency drove an SUV into the front of nearby restaurant a few months prior. 'When the police called, the alarm went off, we showed up and they just thought that it was maybe a medical emergency or something,' Way said. 'When I showed up, I walked in and said, 'Well the ATM is gone.' That's when we knew it was a theft.' The ATM, which had about $3,000, was later found near the south side Walmart with the cash still inside, Way said. The damage to the store was about $10,000. Although the ATM was found, they have opted not to get another. But the owners have decided to keep the marks from the car on their floor for the memory. Truck scrapes railroad bridge on Des Moines' east side

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police are investigating after a truck scraped the underside of a railroad bridge on the city's east side Wednesday morning. It happened around 9:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of E. University Avenue just east of I-235. Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson of the Des Moines Police Department, said the truck's load scraped against the bridge, leaving broken glass and debris on the roadway. A sign posted on the bridge lists its clearance as 13 feet and six inches. Police blocked off some of the lanes in order to clean up the road. There's no word yet on whether the driver was cited. Ames teen with gun arrested in Des Moines carjacking

DES MOINES, Iowa — A 17-year-old from Ames has been arrested in connection with a carjacking that happened in Des Moines Sunday afternoon, and police say the vehicle that was stolen has now been located. Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson for the Des Moines Police Department, said the incident began when an individual trying to sell their 2017 Dodge Charger met with an interested buyer. During the test drive, Sgt. Parizek said the suspect pulled a gun on the owner and took off in the car. Des Moines shooting leaves one seriously injured Officers responded to the report of the theft at 8th Street and Euclid Avenue just before 2:00 p.m. Investigators quickly linked an accomplice vehicle to the case, which had been spotted in West Des Moines shortly after 1:00 p.m., switching license plates. Sgt. Parizek said additional investigation caused DMPD to seek help from the Ames Police Department, which found the suspected accomplice vehicle at an Ames residence. Detectives with DMPD went to Ames and located the 17-year-old carjacking suspect. He was taken into custody. The suspect's name has not been released. The suspect is charged with: Robbery – 1st Degree (Class B felony) Conspiracy To Commit A Forcible Felony (Class C felony) Assault While Committing A Felony (Class D felony) Trafficking In Stolen Weapons (Class D felony) Persons Ineligible To Possess Dangerous Weapons (Serious Misdemeanor) Sgt. Parizek said a 9mm handgun was recovered by detectives, which had been reported stolen from Illinois earlier this year. Police initially asked for help to locate the Dodge Charger because it wasn't at the residence where the teen was arrested. Later Monday morning, Sgt. Parizek said the car was located in an apartment complex parking lot in Ames, hidden under a tarp. Police continue to investigate and follow leads on accomplices to the crime. If you have any information about the case, police ask you to call 911.
