Chase suspect bitten by K9 after running from stolen truck, DMPD says
Des Moines Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek said the chase began around 10:39 p.m. when police tried to pull over a pickup truck for an equipment violation at SW 9th St. and Leach Ave. There was a short chase that ended at SE 4th St. and E. Phillip St., where the driver bailed and ran.
Sgt. Parizek said a K9 tracked the driver down, but he was non-compliant and was bitten on the arm by the K9. Zachary Rich, 35, suffered minor injuries. He was taken into custody and is being held in the Polk County Jail.

Rich is facing multiple charges, including first-degree theft, second-degree theft, eluding, reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as traffic citations.
Court records show that at least one of the charges is connected to a May 10th chase involving a different stolen vehicle. Rich was able to elude the police at that time.

The dog was taken to the Burlington Dog Pound, where it was later to the Kit Carson Sheriff's Office, the dog was used as a narcotics detection dog with the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office. The dog was recently taken out of service when the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office ended its K-9 program. 'The dog was not trained in any kind of bite work to include protection or apprehension,' the release says. Cheyenne County donated the dog to the Burlington Police Department, but the dog was not actively in service, according to the release. Burlington Police Chief Nathan Hill was housing the dog at his residence at this time, it says. Police K-9 stabbed during standoff after man robbed family member at knifepoint: KCKPD
SHAWNEE, Kan. — Kansas City, Kansas, police say a Shawnee police K-9 that was assisting during an overnight barricade/standoff call was stabbed and taken to a vet. KCKPD said officers responded to the call just east of 10th and Riverview at 3:45 a.m. Police said someone called 911 after a family member armed with a knife came back to the home following an assault. Shawnee police sent K-9 Officer Dagger to help – but when officers tried to arrest the suspect, he stabbed the K-9. 'The K-9 handler actually saw the suspect; everything he observed, [it] appeared that he was not armed,' KCKPD Officer Thomas Tomasic told FOX4. 'So, they sent the dog in. When the dog approached, the dog was stabbed. [Officers] pulled the dog out, and that's when we set up an official barricade on the suspect.' KCKPD said the suspect surrendered at 7:30 a.m. and was arrested after robbing a family member. 'A family member had robbed another family member at knifepoint,' Tomasic said. 'The dog was wearing its protective gear, but it was stabbed in the neck area. So the vest would not have protected the dog from that.' Police said K-9 Officer Dagger was taken to a veterinary clinic and is expected to fully recover. NYPD to significantly boost cops at Dominican parade after last year's mayhem
The NYPD is significantly boosting the number of cops at the Dominican Day Parade on Sunday — after an unruly crowd and a slashing forced police to shut down the festivities early last year. The 43rd annual cultural celebration – set to run from West 38th to West 55th streets on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan – will have 500 more police officers on the beat than last year, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters Friday. 'Just like every other major parade in New York City, plans are in place to ensure that it will be safe, it will be secure and that it will be peaceful,' Tisch said. 'And the women and men of the NYPD will be out there protecting everyone along the route with a stepped-up presence this year.'
