Former K-9 Kills 3-Year-Old Daughter of Police Chief in Deadly Attack

On Monday, Aug. 11, deputies responded to a 911 call in Kit Carson about a child who had been attacked by a dog, according to a press release from the Kit Carson County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Travis Belden and Deputy Darrin Newberry arrived on scene a minute later and found an unresponsive 3-year-old and her mother in the back of the residence, according to the release.
By then, the dog, a German Shepherd, had been secured in a kennel.
EMS rushed the child to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The dog was taken to the Burlington Dog Pound, where it was later euthanized.According to the Kit Carson Sheriff's Office, the dog was used as a narcotics detection dog with the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office.
The dog was recently taken out of service when the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office ended its K-9 program.
'The dog was not trained in any kind of bite work to include protection or apprehension,' the release says.
Cheyenne County donated the dog to the Burlington Police Department, but the dog was not actively in service, according to the release.
Burlington Police Chief Nathan Hill was housing the dog at his residence at this time, it says.
'This is a very tragic situation, affecting the community as a whole,' the department said in the release.
Authorities are continuing to investigate.

A Staten Island homeowner is dealing with costly damage to his property, all thanks to what may be part of a social media challenge. And it's not the first time something like this has happened in the borough. The vandalism appears to be part of a stunt called the "Kool-Aid Man Challenge," a nod to the commercial featuring the mascot of the popular drink bursting through a wall. None of it sits well with Noby Augustine. Young people are seen on video running full force and smashing through a fence at his home on Rathbun Avenue in the Prince's Bay section during the overnight hours on Monday. While doing so, they took the fence down and sent garbage cans flying. Augustine is the latest resident on Staten Island to have his property vandalized that way. "Monday night, I didn't sleep. I got sick because of that," Augustine said. "I looked from the window, so I saw like two kids were facing the fence and getting ready. So before I say something, they already jumped through the fence and they smashed it." The two teens were seen putting their cellphones on the ground before busting through his fence. Augustine reported the incident to police, but he said it wasn't a unique situation, adding he returned home from a trip two years ago to also find his fence busted. "It's not funny at all, but, yeah, [they] should not be doing this," he said. Back in April, Ben Helwa's fence at his home in the Eltingville neighborhood was vandalized in similar fashion. Surveillance video shows three youngsters running through it, with one kid seen with his phone out to film. "I was just in shock because, once again, these kids ran through the fence. They fled the scene. Are the kids even okay?" Helwa said. Augustine said his fence is once again fixed, and he's getting the word out to warn others. "Someone has to stop this," he said. "We should not be keeping quiet, like we should stop doing it. All the homeowners, like, they should be speaking up." Police say these so-called challenges may seem harmless, but they are crimes. And for the pranksters, what might feel like a laugh online could quickly land them with a criminal record offline.

Uber driver, passenger escape armed carjackers after stopping for tree branch on Massachusetts road
An Uber driver was about to drop off his last passenger of the night when he pulled up on a tree branch laying across the road in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Esmelky Acevedo, 33, said he was driving down the tree lined Seven Bridges Road around 1 o'clock Thursday morning. Acevedo said he got out of his car to move the branch when two men suddenly jumped out of the woods and ran for his car. The passenger was still inside. "I don't know if they wanted to rob us but what I can see is that they wanted the car so bad," Acevedo told WBZ-TV. "To be honest it went so fast I just reacted to the situation. I was there but it wasn't me. I could tell it was God taking control of the situation." Lancaster police said one of the two suspects jumped in the driver's seat, and the other ran to the back of the car to pull the Uber passenger out of the car. Acevedo said that man pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her cellphone and other belongings. In the meantime, Acevedo said he pulled the suspect out of the driver's seat. A struggle ensued but Acevedo said he was able to regain control of the car. In bit of quick thinking, Acevedo decided to put the car in drive. An attempt, he said, to distract the suspects so his passenger could run away. "I kept moving, doing that same process, keep moving, keep moving, so that they could have a good distance between [the passenger] and the two guys," he said. Acevedo said he then put the car in reverse and accelerated quickly to catch up to the passenger who jumped in the car. The pair called 911. Lancaster police said the suspects used the branch as a setup. Investigators described the men as, "Hispanic males of smaller stature." Acevedo said police had possession of his car after he noticed fingerprints on the side of it. The Uber driver of four years said he's never had anything like this happen to him and was thankful his instincts kicked it. "I did the best that I can to protect [the passenger] and to face the situation because I don't want to happen to anyone else." Lancaster police said they are continuing to investigate but noted there was no ongoing threat to the public.
