Matla A Bana is a national charity organisation focussing on supporting children who report rape and abuse against them.
According to their project manager, Lizel van Eden, this very NPO recently had a community get-together known as Red Day to support these children.
'Matla A Bana is proud to be part of community-driven projects, and on May 8, we once again witnessed how the business community dedicated their time for Red Day.
The aim is to make a difference in the lives of children exposed to severe trauma,' she explained.
'In South Africa, the most predominant age of child rape victims are between the ages of five and 12. We were blessed with 100 comfort packs, and these packs were received by the Krugersdorp Regional and Children's courts as well as the Krugersdorp police's Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit. A comfort pack makes a direct impact in the life of a raped child,' she said.
Lizel concluded to thank everyone involved for this incredible donation during the month they focus on child protection.

Communities need to know there is help against gender-based violence and substance abuse
In an effort to raise awareness in Vredefort on substance abuse and gender-based violence, various stakeholders took hands in hosting a Women's month celebration under the theme, Empowered Women Empower Other Women. The event, held at Vredefort Multipurpose Centre, specifically focussed on engaging with the community not only on substance abuse, but also on the services they offer to victims of substance abuse, and their affected family members. Members of Vredefort SAPS and the Tumahole Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit (FCS), together with representatives of Ngwathe Municipality, CPF, Department of Social Development, SANCA, FSCA Department of Health, Department of Education, Legal Aid SA, and Road Safety, emphasized that the community should work together with stakeholders in the fight against substance abuse and gender-based violence. Constable Sehume from Tumahole FCS addressed the community on women's safety and security, raising awareness on common cases that they deal with in Vredefort, including child neglect and missing children, as well as rape cases. Sehume encouraged parents to look after their children at all times, and urged rape victims to report the case as soon as possible to the police. She discouraged women from walking alone at night. Three affected family members then courageously took turns giving their testimonies on how their children overcame the addiction of drugs, and how some still deal with their children who are addicted. About 100 community members were reached, and pamphlets on substance abuse were distributed.

Father charged with attempted murder after 'assaulting' daughter, 4
The man was arrested on Wednesday after police responded to a complaint about a father allegedly physically abusing his child in Eldorado Park. 'On arrival at the scene, they were pointed to a backyard shack that was closed. On entering, police found a man with a little boy and a little girl,' said Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo. He said they noticed the girl sleeping in the bed had head injuries, bruises and a swollen eye. The man, who introduced himself as the father of the children, could not give a clear explanation about what happened to the girl. 'Police arrested the father and rushed the girl to a medical care centre for treatment. The father was later charged with attempted murder and child abuse,' Masondo said. He said further investigation by the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit led to the arrest of the mother of the victim, who was charged with defeating the ends of justice.
