Mini Cooper JCW is a niche within a niche and the personality comes with a price

Globe and Mail27-05-2025

The Cooper 3-door is one of the few small cars left. With the departure of the gas-powered Fiat 500, there's nothing else quite like it on the market. It's cute and brimming with heritage and character. With the latest redesign, I rediscovered some joy behind the wheel that I felt was lacking in the last generation. But with prices starting close to $40,000 for the base car and climbing to $55,000 for the sportier John Cooper Works version, it might be cheerful but not cheap.
The 3-door is the Cooper's purest form, which goes back to the 1959 original. It continues with evolutionary styling tweaks because anything drastic and it wouldn't be a Mini Cooper.
The car is instantly recognizable; however, the latest model is leaner having shed features such as the fender grilles while offering a more minimalist aesthetic. The headlights come without the chrome rings, and the taillights are no longer union jacks. It's also slightly more compact, losing a smidgen of length but gaining some back in the wheelbase.
The John Cooper Works (JCW) version adds a cool wing on the roof, larger wheels, wider tires and cranks up the turbo boost. There's no power increase over last year's model but the torque figure jumps significantly to 280 lb-ft from 236 and you feel it even more when driving. The factory zero-to-100 kilometre an hour time of 6.1 seconds seems conservative. Automotive journalist Jason Camissa pulled off quicker times during a drag race with the less powerful Cooper S in a recent video posted to Hagerty's YouTube channel.
More power, or torque in this instance, is great, but it doesn't always equal more fun to drive. The last Cooper JCW didn't do it for me. For something of its stature, I expected the agility of a mosquito, but it didn't feel like that. The steering was heavy and the pedals were stiff. It felt overweight with too much BMW DNA.
That's not the case with the latest model. The new JCW feels nimble with a light, precise steering rack and a snappy seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It's like a mini Volkswagen GTI with a more entertaining personality. And it's quick, raising its little snout in the air under heavy acceleration, gurgling and popping when you downshift.
Unlike the Cooper S, which is strangely devoid of paddle shifters, the JCW gets them, enabling manual control of the gearbox. In Go-Kart mode, it won't upshift until you pull the right paddle.
The JCW has a nice throaty bark emitted from a single centre-mounted tailpipe. There's pronounced fake engine sound pumped in through the speakers, but that's becoming unavoidable in performance cars. It mostly goes away when you aren't in Sport – sorry Go-Kart – mode.
Despite its diminutive size, the Mini JCW is solid and stable at highway speeds and great fun to toss around on a twisty road, with easily approachable limits. Finally, it feels like a hot hatch that's worth recommending. But for around $50,000, there are better ways to spend your money.
The Civic Type R, if you can find one in stock, is one of the best sports cars money can buy. It's faster, has better handling and there's much more space inside. From a performance standpoint, there's no comparing the two and it costs about the same as the JCW.
There's also the Golf GTI, and its more powerful cousin, the Golf R. In the hot hatchback bible, the GTI is Genesis. A jack-of-all-trades, that does everything well, including carrying passengers. The GTI starts at less than $40,000 and the Golf R adds all-wheel drive and has more than 300 horsepower and, at around $51,000, is still less expensive than the JCW.
So, what exactly does the Mini get you besides its form factor and cuteness? Depending on who you ask, it has the best interior of its rivals and the best infotainment system. There's textured fabric on the dash and doors, ambient light projectors, heritage-inspired toggle switches and the fabulous round infotainment screen. The system is responsive and easy to use and the display is sharp with the best graphics in the business.
Mini positions the Cooper as a premium small car and it feels like that. Where the Honda and VW can blend into the background, the Mini will always get noticed. It has a more expressive and joyful design, which might be worth it to some. It's also smaller than just about everything else on the road. A GTI is more than a foot longer, making the JCW a true city car that's easy to park just about anywhere.
Small sporty cars are already in a niche market and the JCW is like a niche within that niche. It's a great little hatch, I just wish it were $10,000 cheaper.

Europe's auto parts suppliers suspend output due to China's rare earth curbs

Robotic arms on the Peugeot vehicle assembly line at the Stellantis NV auto plant in Sochaux, France, on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024. Stellantis is struggling with slowing and more competitive auto markets across Europe, where electric-vehicle demand is waning. Some European auto parts plants have suspended output and German carmaker BMW warned its supplier network was affected by shortages of rare earths, as concerns about the damage from China's restrictions on critical mineral exports deepen. China's decision in April to suspend exports of a wide range of rare earths and related magnets has upended the supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world. The move underscores China's dominance of the critical mineral industry, key to the green energy transition, and is seen as leverage by China in its ongoing trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump. China produces around 90% of the world's rare earths. On Wednesday, German carmaker BMW said that part of its supplier network was affected by the shortage in rare earths, but that its own plants were running as normal. Europe's auto supplier association CLEPA said several production lines have been shut down due to rare earths shortages, the latest to warn about the growing threat to manufacturing due to the curb. Of the hundreds of requests for export licenses made by auto suppliers since early April, only a quarter have been granted so far, CLEPA added, with some requests rejected on what the association described as 'highly procedural grounds.' It did not identify the companies but warned of further outages. 'Procedures seem to vary from province to province and in several instances IP-sensitive information has been requested,' it said, adding that if the process was not streamlined soon, more plants would likely be affected in the next three to four weeks as inventories depleted. While China's announcement in April coincided with a broader package of retaliation against Washington's tariffs, the curbs apply globally and are causing worry among business executives around the world. German and U.S. automakers have complained that restrictions by China are threatening production, following a similar grievance from an Indian EV maker last week. Many are lobbying their governments to find a quick solution and scrambling to find alternatives. Some companies only have supplies to last a few weeks or months, Wolfgang Weber, CEO of Germany's electrical and digital industry association ZVEI, said in an emailed statement. 'Companies currently feel abandoned by politicians and are partly looking for solutions to their difficult situation on their own in China,' he said. Swedish Autoliv, the world's biggest maker of airbags and seatbelts, said its operations are not affected, but CEO Mikael Bratt said he has set up a task force to manage the situation. Reliance on China Automakers from General Motors to BMW and major suppliers like ZF and BorgWarner are researching or have developed motors with low- to zero rare earth content in a bid to cut their reliance on China, but few have managed to scale production to bring down costs. BMW has deployed a magnet-free electric motor for its latest generation of electric cars, but still requires rare earths for smaller motors powering components like windshield wipers or car window rollers. German carmaker Volkswagen has received indications that a limited number of Chinese rare earth export licenses have been granted to subcontractors and the company is not seeing any shortages at the moment, it said on Wednesday. China's slow pace of easing its critical mineral export controls has become a focus of Trump's criticism of Beijing, which he says has violated the truce reached last month to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. Trump has sought to redefine the trading relationship with the United States' biggest economic rival China by imposing steep tariffs on billions of dollars of imported goods in hopes of narrowing a trade deficit and bringing back lost manufacturing. Trump imposed tariffs as high as 145% against China only to scale them back after a selloff in stock, bond and currency markets over the sweeping nature of the levies. China has responded with its own tariffs and is leveraging its dominance in key supply chains to persuade Trump to back down. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to talk this week to try and iron out their differences and the export curbs are expected to be high on the agenda. In a social media post on Wednesday, Trump said that Xi is 'VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH,' highlighting the fragility of the deal. Tesla's Low-Cost EV in Focus as Global Sales Decline

Electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla (TSLA) is drawing attention with its proposed low-cost EV, as global sales of its autos continue to decline. Last year, CEO Elon Musk already canceled plans for a $25,000 EV, called Model 2. However, the company has since been promoting ideas of launching a more 'affordable' EV this year to beat the competition and expand its market share. Confident Investing Starts Here: Easily unpack a company's performance with TipRanks' new KPI Data for smart investment decisions Receive undervalued, market resilient stocks right to your inbox with TipRanks' Smart Value Newsletter This year, Tesla's auto sales in China were ousted by domestic player BYD (BYDDF). Moreover, Musk's political inclinations sparked dramatic protests and criticism, which ultimately led to weakening sales of Tesla's EVs globally, especially in European markets. The History of Tesla's Low-Cost EV When a Reuters report dated April 5, 2024, claimed that Musk had canceled the $25,000 EV project, Musk immediately commented on his X account saying 'Reuters is lying.' His response took investors by surprise, leaving many wondering why he was disputing widely known facts. Frantic investors questioned whether Musk had changed his mind, but Musk confirmed that the project was indeed dead. The new affordable EV was expected to be launched in the first half of 2025, but no specific details have been released yet. The only known information is that Tesla plans to produce stripped-down versions of Model 3 and Model Y, which will be 'affordable' and consumers would be able to buy them. Since the second half of last year, Musk's attention has been divided between his political activities, including his role in leading the infamous DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) committee and running his business ventures. Tesla faced massive criticism for the CEO's involvement in laying off government staff, which also hurt the company's sales. However, Musk announced last week that he is leaving his role as advisor to the U.S. President Donald Trump and will now refocus his full attention on his companies. Musk's Pay Deal Hangs in the Balance Musk's non-business endeavors have also cost him financially. In 2024, he was the lowest paid CEO among the S&P 500 companies, receiving zero salary from his Tesla. Since 2018, his compensation is tied to Tesla's overall performance and depends on meeting specific milestones related to market capitalization, revenue, and adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization). He has several stock options that are contingent on achieving these milestones. However, due to the company's dwindling performance, some executives are considering awarding Musk a traditional CEO salary. It remains to be seen whether Musk's full-time return will lead to a full-throttle boost in Tesla's performance. Is Tesla a Buy, Hold, or Sell? On TipRanks, TSLA stock has a Hold consensus rating based on 16 Buys, 10 Holds, and 11 Sell ratings. Also, the average Tesla price target of $282.70 implies 17.5% downside potential from current levels. Year-to-date, TSLA stock has lost 15.1%. See more TSLA analyst ratings
