These are the most endangered historic places in all of New York State
The National Trust for Historic Preservation just dropped its 2025 list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, and two New York State icons made the cut: The Wellington Hotel in Pine Hil l and The Turtle: Native American Center for the Living Arts in Niagara Falls.
Let's start in the Catskills. Built in 1882, the Wellington is a hulking, wood-frame reminder of the golden age of mountain tourism—when resorts were grand, porches were wide and urbanites fled the heat for fresh air and blueberry pie. But today, it's sagging under the weight of time, with a failing foundation and a repair bill estimated at $7 million. The hamlet of Pine Hill, population 339, can't foot the bill alone. A grassroots group of 20 locals has stepped in with big plans to revive the space as a community hub with a café, grocery store and workforce housing, but they'll need serious funding to pull it off.
Meanwhile, just steps from the roar of Niagara Falls, The Turtle—a striking, turtle-shaped cultural center built in 1981 by Arapaho architect Dennis Sun Rhodes—sits eerily silent. Once the largest Indigenous arts venue in the Eastern U.S., it's been closed since 1996 and is now unprotected, painted over and eyed for demolition. A coalition of more than 1,000 advocates, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, is fighting to bring it back to life as a celebration of Haudenosaunee heritage.
Both projects underscore this year's theme: preservation isn't just about saving old buildings, but rather it's about making space for community, identity and economic resilience. In other words, it's not about nostalgia. It's about what happens next.

UK holidaymakers face major change as new EU passport rules confirmed
The EU will roll out the new entry/exit system in the Schengen zones in October The UK Government today announced that the European Union's (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) will begin in October. The EES is a digital border control platform that will replace manual passport stamping for non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area, including countries such as Spain and Greece. It forms part of the EU's broader digital transformation of border management, which aims to improve security, detect overstays, and streamline border procedures. Approved last week by the European Parliament with a vote of 572 to 42 (with 67 abstentions), the EES introduces biometric registration and automated entry logs at external EU borders According to from October 12, Brits will need to create a digital record on their first visit to the Schengen area, either at the port or airport on arrival. They will also be required to submit fingerprints and have their photos taken at dedicated booths. They may also be required to answer the Schengen Border Code questions. Travellers will not need to provide any information before arriving in a Schengen country. The travel insider, Ivaylo Danailov, CEO of SkyRefund, said: "While the Entry/Exit System is primarily about immigration control rather than security screening or boarding, it will still likely have an impact on overall passenger flow, especially at border control points. "Biometric capture and passport scanning should be able to process multiple passengers simultaneously and reduce border queues, helping passengers reach security and boarding gates more quickly. "Since the Exit/Entry system will hold recent travel history and biometric data, less time per passenger should be needed, especially for regular or low-risk travellers. "It also means airlines and border authorities will have more accurate, real-time information about who has entered or exited the Schengen area. "That should help reduce cases of denied boarding due to visa overstays or documentation issues, which can delay flight departures." Advice posted on states: "If you enter the Schengen area through the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or St Pancras International, this information will be taken at the border, before you leave the UK. You may also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo when you leave the Schengen area. "EES may take each passenger a few extra minutes to complete so be prepared to wait longer than usual at the border once the system starts. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "If you frequently travel to the Schengen area for work and/or leisure purposes, you must ensure that your total stay in the Schengen area is no more than 90 days in every 180 days. "You must be aware of the penalty and enforcement approach for exceeding the immigration limit in any individual Member State you plan to travel to, or through." The countries in the Schengen area are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

British Airways flight declares 'emergency' as it's forced to divert
British Airways flight BA1410 from London Heathrow to Belfast declared a mid-air emergency and was forced to divert to Manchester Airport A British Airways service bound for Belfast had to make an unexpected detour when the pilots issued an emergency alert. The BA1410 flight took off from London Heathrow at 08:05 BST on July 26, but around half an hour into the journey, the crew triggered a 7700 emergency code, as reported by AirLive. The aircraft then entered a holding pattern before being directed to Manchester Airport due to what was believed to be a potential depressurisation problem. Emergency services were on standby as the Airbus A319, with a capacity of up to 130 passengers, touched down. Sources indicate that the diversion resulted from a technical glitch in a sensor device, with passengers forced to disembark for thorough inspections by British Airways technicians. An alternative plane was subsequently arranged, allowing travellers to resume their trips after approximately a three-hour delay. Matthew Hall, the managing director of airport transfers app hoppa, has previously noted that compensation entitlements typically hinge on whether the disruption stems from airline faults, such as mechanical defects or staff shortages. Hall remarked, "Since leaving the EU, UK flights are still covered by a similar law that protects passenger's rights when faced with travel delays.", reports Belfast Live. This protection extends to departures from UK airports, arrivals at UK airports on EU or UK carriers, departures from EAA airports, or arrivals in the EU on UK airlines. "If your flight is a non-UK flight that is part of a connection to a UK flight, then you can still claim if you are delayed for more than three hours, you booked the flights as a single booking, and the delay is the airlines fault," Hall elaborates. By law, cancellations with less than 14 days notice entitle you to compensation, depending on the length of the flight route. "With short-haul flights (<1,500km, i.e. Manchester to Dublin) you could be entitled to £220 if arriving at your final destination more than two hours after originally planned, reduced to £110 if arriving within two hours of schedule and announced with more than seven days' notice," Hall explains. This increases to £350 for medium-haul flights (1,500-3,500km i.e. Leeds Bradford to Tenerife South) if you arrive at your final destination more than three hours after originally planned, according to Hall. "Although, this can be reduced to £175 if arriving within three hours of schedule and announced with more than seven days' notice," Hall adds.

Popular water bottle launches special Oasis collection as band take to Wembley
This collection of water bottles and coffee cups are perfect for fans looking forward to the reunion tour. The Gallagher brothers are currently on their world-famous reunion tour, which is continuing with five shows at Wembley before the band head up to Edinburgh in August. And fans looking for Oasis merch are in luck, as iconic water bottle brand Chilly's has just released a full range in celebration of the long-awaited Oasis reunion. From coffee cups and water bottles costing £40 to cutlery sets at £25, those shopping for all things Oasis are in for a treat. Chilly's is renowned for its top-quality products, particularly the wide range of water bottles which are 100 per cent leak-proof and can keep drinks cold for 24 hours, according to the retailer's website. There are two Oasis water bottles available in the new range, which both cost £40. One is a sleek black bottle with the famous song lyric 'don't look back in anger' written down one side, and the Oasis logo on the back. Another option is a white bottle branded with the band's instantly recognisable logo in red. The bottles are made with 100 per cent stainless steel, and can keep drinks cold for a whole 24 hours or hot for 12 hours. Also available is a black travel coffee cup, decorated with the band's logo in white, which can keep drinks hot for up to four hours, costing £40. Those heading to festivals this summer may be tempted by the Chilly's Oasis cutlery set, which is £25 and comes in a sleek black case with the Oasis logo printed in white. But those considering alternative Oasis merchandise may go for Debenhams' Oasis Tshirt, which is currently on offer for £30 and comes in the same style as the black water bottle and travel mug, with the white logo printed on the front. Or those looking for something smaller may go for this cute Oasis keyring for £12, also on Debenhams. If you're happy for a non-Oasis themed water bottle, the Ninja Thirsti comes in multiple sizes and costs £34.99, while the viral Stanley Cup in a massive 1.2 litre size remains a best-seller on Amazon at £32. But Chilly's is a widely respected brand with some amazing reviews for its products, particularly water bottles. One happy shopper said on Trustpilot: "As a repeat buyer (this is my fourth one!), I can confidently say this is the best water bottle out there. I was looking for a 1000ml bottle but was hesitant, worrying it would be too heavy and bulky for daily use. "I was completely wrong! It's surprisingly manageable and has helped me stay hydrated. "The best feature is the flip-top lid; it's incredibly convenient and makes sipping throughout the day effortless. On top of its great functionality, the bottle is durable, easy to maintain, and has a sleek, modern design. If you're on the fence, just get it." Yet a less happy shopper said of the brand's coffee flasks: "Having spent £42 on what is technically a flask, I had higher expectations, it leaks if tilted only slightly and the mouth hole is so tiny I can just about drink from it. Only good thing is it keeps the drink hot but overall very disappointed." But another pleased customer added: "I had previously brought a Chilly's bottle several years ago which I sadly lost however this series 2 bottle had been a great replacement. "Whilst keeping any drinks cold for 24 hours or more it also has a rubber surface that means its silent when placing it on a table. "Its a great bottle I use it all the time." The Oasis collection is available on the Chilly's website. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today.
