Dentist Said Wife's Safari Death Was a Freak Accident — Then His Girlfriend Heard a Very Different Story

Yahoo21-07-2025
When Bianca Rudolph died from a shotgun blast in Zambia, her husband, Larry Rudolph — a Pittsburgh-area dentist — claimed it was a tragic accident that occurred during a dream hunting vacation in Africa. But more than five years later, bombshell revelations turned that narrative upside down.
Bianca's death, initially ruled accidental by local authorities in October 2016, sparked a years-long international investigation that uncovered lies, a secret workplace affair, and a hefty financial motive for murder — and the case is now the subject of a new three-part docuseries, Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari premiering July 21 on Hulu. (A trailer can be seen below.)
The ABC News Studios series features exclusive interviews from federal prison with Larry and his former dental hygienist and mistress, Lori Milliron, offering rare insight into their relationship.
"Plus, new interviews with an eclectic cast of characters including [Larry]'s former business partner, Milliron's daughter, the Rudolphs' insurance broker, FBI agents close to the case, the former U.S. ambassador to Zambia and more," a synopsis from ABC Studios reads. "Members of Safari Club International and several of [Larry]'s former dental office employees also speak out, painting a disturbing picture of the man at the center of this shocking case."
The married couple was getting ready to leave their hunting camp in Kafue National Park on the morning of Oct. 11, 2016, when Bianca was fatally shot with a 12-gauge shotgun. Larry told the Zambian police that he heard the gunshot while he was taking a shower and that he found his wife of 34 years on the bedroom floor bleeding from the chest.
He said he suspected that the shotgun had been left loaded from the hunt the previous day and that the gun went off while Bianca was trying to pack it into its case, according to a federal complaint previously obtained by PEOPLE.
However, federal authorities in the U.S. believed that Bianca was shot from 6.5 to 8 feet, and determined that it was not likely she pulled the shotgun's trigger based on a reconstruction of the incident, per The New York Times.
U.S. officials later accused Larry of killing his wife in order to collect millions of dollars in life insurance and continue his relationship with Milliron. He filed fraudulent claims on nine separate life insurance policies to obtain about $4.9 million, federal prosecutors said.
In August 2022, less than a year after his arrest, Larry was convicted in U.S. federal court of foreign murder and mail fraud. He was sentenced to life in prison.
During Larry's trial in Denver, Colo., a federal prosecutor said that Larry admitted to the shooting while dining with Milliron upon hearing in 2020 that the FBI was probing into the death of Bianca, per the Associated Press. Larry told jurors that "I did not kill my wife. I could not murder my wife. I would not murder my wife," the AP reported.
Milliron, who had been romantically involved with Larry for years, was also found guilty in connection with the case. In June 2023, she was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison for perjury, obstruction of justice, and being an accessory after the fact.
Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari is produced by XTR in association with Rolling Stone Films and ABC News Studios for Hulu. The series is directed and executive produced by Dani Sloane. Trophy Wife is based on the Rolling Stone article 'Before the Dentist Knows You're Dead' by Matt Sullivan, who also serves as executive producer.
Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari premieres July 21 on Hulu.

Five charged after video of violent altercation in Cincinnati goes viral

Police are investigating a violent altercation involving multiple people in downtown Cincinnati on Saturday night after video of the brawl went viral on social media. Police Chief Teresa Theetge said that the incident 'was a sudden dispute between individuals following a verbal altercation' and that it was not connected to the Cincinnati Music Festival, which was happening at the same time. Theetge said she is 'in complete disgust waking up to the viral video' of the incident circulating online. 'The behavior displayed is nothing short of cruel and absolutely unacceptable,' she said in a statement Sunday. 'Our investigative team is working diligently to identify every individual involved in causing harm.' Five people face charges, Theetge told reporters Monday. She declined to identify the suspects or provide more details about their alleged crimes. Those records remain sealed, she said, and some of those who have been charged have not been located. Theetge said she expects more charges. Alcohol was likely to have played a "significant part" in an altercation, which authorities received only one 911 call about, she said. "For us to have 100 or so people down there, involved in or watching this event, recording with their cellphones, and for us to get only one phone call of this incident is unacceptable," she said. Videos circulating online show a chaotic scene involving at least a dozen people. In one video, a few men can be seen standing face-to-face, having what appears to be a verbal altercation, before one man seems to hit another in the face. That seems to set off a full-blown physical altercation, in which the man who threw the first hit is beaten by multiple people in the middle of a street. The violence includes kicks and stomps to his face. The crowd also appears to attack two other men who appear to know the man being beaten. In another video, a woman trying to defend him gets knocked unconscious by someone in the crowd. Blood can be seen running from her mouth as she lies on the ground. It is not clear what happened before the videos were recorded. The incident got much attention on social media over the weekend, particularly on Elon Musk's X, where many high-profile right-wing accounts, such as LibsofTikTok and End Wokeness, framed the fight as an assault by a Black 'mob' on a white couple. Musk himself published posts decrying the fight and calling for mainstream media attention. He did not mention race in his post. Prominent Republican politicians also weighed in, with Vice President JD Vance answering a question Monday about the fight, saying he saw a 'mob of lawless thugs beating up on an innocent person.' Vance's half-brother, Cory Bowman, is running for mayor of Cincinnati and will face the incumbent, Aftab Pureval, in November. Pureval said he was outraged by the fight, calling it 'horrifying to watch' and 'intolerable' in any part of the city. He said he is confident that arrests are 'forthcoming.' 'That's not who we are as a city,' Pureval said in a statement Monday. 'Since the fight occurred, I have been in consistent communication with Chief Theetge, and our police have been working around the clock to investigate and bring perpetrators of violence to justice.' Pureval reiterated that the altercation was not connected to the Cincinnati Music Festival, Cincinnati Reds games, the Big3 basketball tournament 'or any of the large events that took place over the weekend.' Madlanga inquiry's six-month investigation to cost R147.9m

Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga to investigate allegations of criminal infiltration into the SA justice system. Madlanga says the inquiry has already started its work, but needs to procure building space and internet reporting capacity before it can hold public hearings. The justice department has confirmed it is responsible for that procurement process. Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga's inquiry into KwaZulu-Natal police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's allegations of criminal infiltration into the South African justice system has an estimated budget R147.9 million over a six-month period. That budget was confirmed by Department of Justice and Constitutional Development spokesperson Terence Manase on Tuesday, after Madlanga referred all queries about the budget to the department. 'Regarding your specific enquiry, we can confirm that the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is responsible for the procurement process for services for the Commission in consultation with the Commission Chairperson and Secretary,' Manase told News24. 'Due to the timeframes, the department has applied for a deviation from standard procurement processes with the National Treasury for the Madlanga Commission and awaiting feedback. 'The estimated budget for the commission over a six-month period is R147.9 million'. On Monday, Madlanga announced that his inquiry had already started its work, but that it still needed to procure a building and internet reporting capacity before it could hold public hearings. He also announced that some of South Africa's most highly regarded advocates would be part of the team that aims to get to the bottom of Mkhwanazi's claims. This is a developing story.

Hotel room rape report prompts CCTV appeal

Detectives are searching for the man pictured above after a woman reported being raped in the early hours of New Year's Day at a hotel in Sheffield. South Yorkshire Police said the victim reported a man, who she did not know, attacked her in a hotel room in St Mary's Gate, at about 04:00 GMT on 1 January. The man is described as being 5ft 10in (178cm), of slim build, with short black hair, a "stubbly" beard and a slit in one of his eyebrows at the time. A police spokesperson said: "We have been conducting extensive inquiries since the incident was first reported to us, but are now appealing for the public's help to identify the man in this image as we believe he may be able to help us with our investigation."
