
Column: Job outlook dims for class of 2025, but upcoming graduates can improve prospects
The job market for graduating college seniors appears less bright than it did in the fall. One potential recession is increased competition and the effect of artificial intelligence are weighing on the minds of job seekers.
But the class of 2025 can improve its prospects by focusing on articulating skill sets to employers and being flexible, say career services professionals and employment market researchers.
The National Association of Colleges and Employers annual Job Outlook 2025 survey released in November showed employers planned to hire 7.3% more graduates from the class of 2025 than they did from the class of 2024. But the spring update revealed employers now expect to increase hires by just 0.6%.
That said, most industries are hiring. But because the market is tightening, there will be more competition for jobs, association President and CEO Shawn VanDerziel said in a statement.
The spring survey shows 64.6% of respondents plan to keep hiring levels the same as last year, up from 57.1% in the fall. The percent planning to increase hiring slid to 24.6% from 27%. But fewer employers plan to decrease hiring — 10.9%, down from 15.9%.
'While the job market for the class of 2025 is growing only slightly, graduates who are agile, skills focused, and proactive in building professional networks can still come out ahead,' said Darcie Campos, executive director of career services at University Park-based Governors State University.
Campos has observed more apprehension among graduating seniors as they pursue their job searches, compared to last year.
'There's that economic uncertainty about a potential recession and the impact that it could have on employment,' she said. 'Graduates are thinking more about AI. They are perceiving that as a potential threat to positions down the line. Between that and student debt and trying to figure out how they're going to pay for student loans, I think there's a little bit more apprehension this year.'
There were fewer employers who participated in the university's career fair this past spring — 44 compared to 59 last spring. Student participation rose 40%, said Campos.
'Students are out there,' she said. 'They are ambitious and working toward finding opportunities and doing the work that they need to do to get employment.'
The university has seen fewer government agency recruiters on campus this year and an uptick from recruiters in counseling, mental health, social work and criminal justice, Campos said.
The association survey revealed that among industries with the most employers projecting increases in hiring were social services, engineering services, food and beverage manufacturing, wholesale trade, management consulting and transportation. Among sectors with the fewest employers projecting increases were information, computer and electronics manufacturing, finance, insurance and real estate and motor vehicle manufacturing.
Employers are relying less on grade point average and more on using skills-based hiring practices to help them identify top job candidates from the class of 2025 said Mary Gatta, the national association's director of research and public policy. It's a continuing trend. In 2019, 73.3% of employers reported using GPA as a screen. That's dropped to 38%. Sixty-four percent of employers report using skills-based hiring practices.
'Using GPA to screen, that has been falling,' said Gatta. 'What they are saying is really important is having some work experience and industry experience, doing internships and also graduates being able to demonstrate their skills and competencies.'
Kaylie Dahms, who will graduate from Governors State this year with a degree in communications, has landed a job in Iowa as a news anchor and reporter. She said she applied to roughly 30 employers and received seven job offers. She completed an internship through the university's department of digital learning and media design. The internship helped her '1,000%,' she said.
Gatta said a separate survey of college graduates who are early career professionals out of college one to three years found those who did some type of experiential learning, be that an internship, student employment or undergraduate research with faculty, reported faster career projection, greater career satisfaction and starting salaries $15,000 higher than students who did not do experiential learning.
Campos said competition for internships has increased.
'That's what I'm hearing form students, with regards to applying and being vetted and trying to compete,' she said. 'I don't know if it's an industry shift with AI reshaping some of that landscape.'
Some employers may feel they don't need as many interns and that AI can do work interns previously did, she speculated.
Students are seeking internships in their sophomore and junior years.
'They're not delaying,' said Campos. 'The internship piece is very important, especially right now when competition is high.'
It can help set students apart, she said.
Among other advice she has for class of 2025 job seekers: diversify your job search. That includes spending time on LinkedIn, networking with faculty and advisers, alumni, current work colleagues and former supervisors who may know of a position that would be a good fit. Maximize your reach for potential opportunities.
'I can't push that enough with our students,' said Campos, who added recognize the importance of building your own personal branding.
'It's not just your resume, your cover letter, the way you interview,' she said. 'It's about how people experience you as a whole, your written communication, your interpersonal communication, the way you make someone feel when they're talking with you in a one-on-one or group setting, the presence you leave on social media, on LinkedIn.'
Those factors will help others see who candidates are as professionals, she said.
She also advised students not to compare themselves to others. A lot of students get so caught up in social media, looking at what their peers, friends and colleagues are doing, but it's important to remember everybody's post-graduate journey and timeline is going to be different, she said. Remain focused on your own journey, she stressed.
She said it's important to be flexible; don't make the mistake of waiting for the perfect job. Sometimes graduates have in their minds specific positions, a specific employers.
'Recognize sometimes holding out for that dream job can lead to long periods of inaction,' Campos warned. 'It's important for all graduates to recognize the importance of starting somewhere, gaining experience wherever that might be and adjusting the course as they go.'
Looking for a job should be a full-time job, and she advises graduating seniors to take advantage of services available through the university's Career Services office.
Anthony Strickland, who will graduate with a degree in accounting this year, credits assistance from the office with helping him land an auditing position with the state of Illinois. He said Governors State Career Services staff helped him build his resume, identify his strengths and weaknesses and prepare for interviews.
'I found it very helpful,' he Strickland. 'I got directly what I needed. The mock interview set me up well and helped relieve stress.'

The State Of Early Talent: Lessons From The Market
The U.S. economy is — in a word — volatile. Markets are shifting rapidly amid growing concerns about rising unemployment and an economic slowdown. Employers, consumers and jobseekers alike are understandably anxious about the future. I recently sat down virtually with a pair of experts: Heather McKay, senior vice president of employer engagement at Strada Education Foundation and executive director of the Strada Institute for the Future of Work; and Shawn VanDerziel, president and CEO of the National Association of Colleges and Employers. For nearly an hour we talked about the Class of 2025, the current job market and other top-of-mind topics for employers and career services professionals. Here are four key takeaways from our conversation: When NACE surveyed employers last fall, companies were planning to increase hiring from the Class of 2025 by 7.3% compared to a year earlier. By this spring, however, employers had revised their estimates significantly downward to less than 1%. Handshake data reveals a similar job market softness. Over the past year, job postings on the Handshake platform shrank by 15% while applications surged by 30%. It's hardly surprising that the Class of 2025 is so down on the job market: 56% are somewhat or very pessimistic about starting their careers in the current economy. To take a more optimistic view, flat year-over-year hiring projections does mean that employers are still seeking new talent — just not in greater numbers than in recent years. For now, it remains a buyer's market for early talent. And because employers are taking a slow but steady approach to hiring, there will be plenty of top talent available throughout the summer and well into the fall. Internships remain the best recruitment tool for employers in terms of return on investment. According to the latest NACE data, companies hired 51% of their interns to full-time opportunities after their internships concluded. After one year on the job, the retention rate runs 20 to 30 percentage points higher for former interns than for employees hired without an internship. For companies that hire dozens or even hundreds of their interns each year, the impact of internships on hiring and retention of early talent is huge. Postsecondary institutions should be embedding work-based learning experiences into their curricula so students get career experience before they enter the workforce. Institutions also should be connecting their students to internship programs at local and regional employers. Better yet, a well-connected third party — like the Baton Rouge Area Chamber in Louisiana — could coordinate and encourage connections between local employers and universities for internships and full-time hiring. Employers, meanwhile, should be creating paid internship programs that give interns actual tasks with real-world implications (like this US Chamber of Commerce project), assign them mentors, allow them to interact with colleagues throughout the organization and provide feedback on their performance. Their goal should be to help their interns — and potential future full-time employees — get the most out of this on-the-job learning experience. Handshake data reveals that 98% of the Class of 2025 are familiar with generative AI tools — and 62% are worried about the impact this fast-emerging technology might have on their careers. The truth is, AI use in the workplace isn't as widespread as it's purported to be — at least not yet. Most people tend not to be early technology adopters, and many small and mid-sized businesses — the companies that employ the majority of early talent — don't have the resources to make significant AI investments. That said, AI is not necessarily going to take your job, but the people who know how to use it probably will. AI's rapid rise requires institutions to double down on efforts to create lifelong learners willing and able to upskill and reskill themselves throughout their working lives. Institutions also should ensure they're teaching durable skills alongside technical ones. Critical thinking in particular is invaluable for developing, iterating and managing AI processes. Both Heather and Shawn had these words of advice for institutions and employers seeking to produce and secure the best early talent: From Heather McKay: 'Institutions need to understand their local labor market and begin to think about how degree production aligns with the local labor market. … It's not happening often but when it does, it provides really important insights into how institutions need to think about preparing their graduates for success.' From Shawn VanDerziel: 'If you run into a 2025 college graduate, offer to be part of their network. Be a mentor. Review their resume. Make connections for them. Help them to think broadly about their skills and experiences … and how to apply them to a full-time career. 'Fox & Friends' Host Rails Against Dems After Being Triggered By 'TACO' Trump Diss
A 'Fox & Friends' host lashed out at Democrats on Tuesday for embracing 'TACO,' an acronym that refers to President Donald Trump's back-and-forth tariff policy. 'Democrats are really off-kilter,' co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy said, introducing a segment titled 'Dems Resort To Cringe Videos As Their Agenda Fails.' TACO, which stands for 'Trump Always Chickens Out,' was coined by Financial Times commentator Robert Armstrong and has reportedly become popular among Wall Street investors. When a reporter asked the president last week to weigh in on the insult, Trump responded with a defensive meltdown. 'Don't ever say what you said. That's a nasty question. To me, that's the nastiest question,' Trump told her. The TACO insult has grown beyond Wall Street, as politicians, late-night talk show hosts and left-leaning influencers on TikTok have started using the term to mock the president. The term has also sparked a trend of creating AI-generated memes depicting Trump as a chicken or taco. On Tuesday, Fox's Campos-Duffy called the term 'cringey' and took the opportunity to hit Democrats' social media presence. 'No, first of all, when you have to explain it, which I'm gonna have to do right now, it's probably a sign it's not the best campaign for them,' she said, showing a video of Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) mocking Trump and eating a taco on TikTok. 'So if you're negotiating and creating deals, [Democrats are] trying to present it as chickening out,' Campos-Duffy said, defending the president. Fox's Brian Kilmeade cut in, 'The Wall Street Journal started it, actually,' referencing a WSJ report highlighting the term. Construction, demolition happening across Penn State's campus. See the projects
Summer is typically a busy time for construction projects on Penn State's University Park campus, but this year, it seems you can't turn a corner without running into scaffolding or fencing. From high-profile projects like the $700 million Beaver Stadium renovation to new and improved classroom spaces, below is a recent look at various under-construction spots on campus. A new $96 million, three-story classroom building is going up near the intersection of Park Avenue and Bigler Road. The 90,000-square-foot building will have large lecture halls, general purpose classrooms with seminar-style and flexible seating, and will be available to any academic college, according to a news release from the university. It's anticipated to be completed in time for the fall 2026 semester. Major work continues at the Sackett Building, part of an overall $89.9 million project and part of the College of Engineering Master Plan. Kunkle Lounge, which connects to the Hammond Building, is also being demolished. Work is expected to continue throughout the year and be completed for fall 2027. Oswald Tower is being demolished following the spring semester opening of the new Susan Welch Liberal Arts Building. Renovations to the Nursing Sciences Building include a 2,700-square-foot expansion on the building's northwest side for a 180-person active-learning, simulation-ready classroom and knowledge commons space. The project was not expected to exceed $28 million, with $10 million coming from philanthropic gifts. Work on the renovations and addition to Osmond Lab started last year. The $115 million project's 48,000-square-foot addition will be a 'high-bay research facility' that supports the physics department, according to a university release. A $21.25 million Jeffrey Field Soccer Complex project includes renovations to the soccer stadium and a new soccer operational facility. Construction began in 2024 and the university is targeting a late 2025 completion date. South of Jeffrey Field, an indoor practice air-supported structure is in the works. The estimated $10 million project will feature artificial turf, sports lighting and surface parking. The most high-profile — and expensive — of Penn State's ongoing construction projects is the Beaver Stadium revitalization. The site has been active since the end of the 2024 football season, with the demolition of the press box in January kicking off the start of more extensive work. Penn State's board of trustees approved up to $700 million in spending on the renovation project last May. In a May 15 video update on the Penn State Athletics website, Associate Director of Development Michael Mauti explained that micropiling, a deep foundation technique using small-diameter, drilled and grouted piles with steel reinforcement to support or stabilize structures, has started on the west side. Temporary seating will be installed there for this football season. A $3.9 million roofing project is underway at Thompson Hall. The project will replace the existing slate roof system. The Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating after an employee working on the project was injured after a May 27 fall. Updates to Ritner and Wolf residence halls are first up in Penn State's plan to renovate all nine Pollock residence halls. The $92.1 million plan aims to completely renew the 1960 residence halls with new amenities such as air conditioning and private bathrooms.
