THE Proteas were dealt a late blow prior to the first ODI against Australia in Cairns on Tuesday when Kagiso Rabada was forced to withdraw due to inflammation on his ankle.
The fast bowler has subsequently been ruled out of the three-match series after undergoing a scan that confirmed the extent of the injury. Rabada will remain in Australia to undergo his rehabilitation.
Kwena Maphaka was added to the Proteas ODI squad on Monday and therefore no replacement will be flown over. Maphaka was the leading wicket-taker across both teams in the recent T20I series against Australia.

The teenage paceman was, however, not included in the Proteas' playing XI for the first ODI with Dewald Brevis and off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen being handed ODI debuts.
Australian captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to insert the Proteas.
'We will be bowling first. The wicket looks dry and spin did play a part in the last T20I. No real expectations, just execute and enjoy playing and winning for Australia. No real surprises for us - Marnus and Carey is back in the XI,' Marsh said at the toss.
Proteas captain Temba Bavuma admitted they also wanted to bowl first.
'Yeah, we would have bowled first as well, that's what the stats say, but we'll need to bat well first,' Bavuma said.
'We've got Brevis and Subrayen in today, quite excited at seeing what they can do. We'll want to play according to the conditions and want the guys to enjoy playing.'
A dream realized as a new era is ignited. A proud Proteas moment as Dewald Brevis receives his ODI cap. 🇿🇦🧢

Markram and Bavuma steer Proteas to record total in Cairns at lunch of first ODI

Photo: AFP Proteas senior batters Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma led from the front as South Africa posted 296/8, setting a new ODI record total at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns. In the build-up to the series, head coach Shukri Conrad suggested that Markram, despite enduring a quiet T20I campaign down under, was poised to rediscover his touch. The 30-year-old responded in style on Tuesday, crafting a fluent 82 from 81 deliveries, striking nine fours in a confident display. Captain Bavuma, making his return to international cricket after a hamstring during June's ICC World Test Championship final at Lord's, eased his way back with a composed half-century. He compiled 65 from 74 balls, including five fours, marking his eighth fifty in the format.

With backs against the wall, Boks coach Erasmus calls for strong response

The Springboks have their backs against the wall and coach Rassie Erasmus has asked his charges to lick their wounds and bounce back strongly in the second Rugby Championship Test match against Australia in Cape Town on Saturday. Erasmus said they must right the wrongs of the disappointing 38-22 loss at Ellis Park last weekend where they forfeited a 22-5 lead at half-time by allowing the visitors to run in five tries in the second half for the famous victory. Erasmus, who will announce the match squad on Tuesday to be captained by centre Jesse Kriel, said they gave away easy tries and must improve at the breakdown. 'Everyone in the group agrees on what we have to do, what we need to get right this week and our focus will go into that at training,' said Erasmus. 'There is a lot of frustration and disappointment but we know what we did wrong. They totally outplayed us, they scored some tries that were not even from phases and they gave us a hiding at the breakdown.

Markram top scores in first ODI, but Rabada misses series with injury

After missing out in the T20 series, he used the extra time afforded him in the 50-over format to build an innings, while still scoring at a strike of more than 100. He struck nine lovely fours, and shared an opening partnership of 92 with Ryan Rickelton, who as in the three T20s, looked scratchy in making 33, needing 43 deliveries to do so. Markram's frustration at getting out for 82 — edging a wide delivery from Ben Dwarhuis to Josh Inglis — was understandable given how controlled he looked and it was ultimately one of the primary reasons behind SA failing to reach 300. 'I wanted heaps more,' Markram said in an interview during the innings break. 'I was finally starting to find my rhythm and then got out.' Playing his first match since the World Test Championship final, Bavuma understandably struggled with his timing initially and with Markram's dismissal, was also cautious at the start of his partnership with Breetzke. With Klaasen and Miller absent, the next few series will be important for Breetzke, to establish himself in the ODI side. After making a hundred on debut in Pakistan and 83 in his second match, Tuesday's 57 off 56 balls, that included one of just three sixes in the SA innings, was another tick next to his name. Breetzke's partnership of 92 with Bavuma, provided the foundation for a late innings surge, but that didn't materialise in the manner SA has managed in the last few years. Bavuma hit five fours in his innings of 65, which came off 74 balls and will be pleased with his first outing since Lord's, a period in which he also recovered from a hamstring injury. Markram mentioned that the pitch was slow, which made shot-making hard, while the new ODI rule, which allows the bowling team choose one of the two balls they started the match with after 34 overs to complete the innings, also appeared to give the Australians more control.
