Furthermore, the regulatory summit highlighted the increasing role of crowdsourced data in telecom regulations and ways in which regulators can leverage it to identify service gaps, promote digital inclusion, drive innovation and accelerate market growth. By complementing traditional data sources, crowdsourced data enables more adaptive and competitive regulatory frameworks.
During the event, discussions emphasised the vital role of high-speed internet connectivity in driving socio-economic development across the MEA region. According to studies, improvements in broadband speeds can contribute to GDP growth and improved labour productivity. In the region, investments in fixed broadband infrastructure, especially for the expansion of fibre-optic networks, are vital for improving service quality, bridging the digital divide, and attracting foreign investments. Participants also highlighted the need for comprehensive network assessments and extended regulatory oversight, especially for emerging services and indoor connectivity.

The suspensions were made under a new electronic monitoring system launched on January 1st, 2025, in cooperation with the Egyptian Customs Authority. The system is designed to regulate mobile phone imports, track registration and taxation, and prevent the circulation of devices brought into the country illegally or without proper declaration. Phones flagged by the system will remain deactivated until verification procedures are completed. According to the NTRA, 47,000 devices initially suspended have since been reactivated after being confirmed as compliant, while another 13,000 remain suspended due to confirmed violations. The NTRA also reaffirmed that travellers are still permitted to bring one mobile phone into the country without paying taxes, provided the device is declared at the point of entry. Since the system's launch, 650,000 devices have been exempted under this rule. However, a recent review found that some exemptions were acquired through unofficial channels, prompting further scrutiny. The NTRA says the electronic system enables better oversight of mobile phone imports, helping to reduce smuggling and ensure that all phones activated on Egyptian networks have met customs and regulatory requirements.

Admaius, an Africa-focused private equity firm, joins forces with Triquera to support the continued growth of Minapharm, which operates one of the largest biological drug substance and product facilities in the Middle East and Africa. The company is renowned for its end-to-end capabilities in manufacturing complex recombinant proteins, viral vectors, and advanced biologics, with operations in both Cairo and Berlin. The strategic partnership is expected to fast-track the development and distribution of affordable, high-quality genetically engineered therapies across underserved markets in Africa and the Middle East. Taarek Refaat Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) confirmed on Sunday that over 650,000 mobile phones have entered the country duty-free alongside travelers since the beginning of the year, under the country's mobile device governance system. The authority clarified that the exemption, allowing one mobile device per traveler to enter the country without customs duties, remains in effect as part of the ongoing pilot phase of a broader telecommunications oversight framework. In an official statement, the NTRA denied social media rumors claiming that previously exempted phones would be retroactively taxed or disabled. 'These claims are unfounded,' the statement read. However, the regulator acknowledged detecting abuse of the exemption policy, revealing that approximately 60,000 devices have had their mobile network access suspended pending further investigation. Through a systematic review of the exemption program, the NTRA uncovered 13,000 devices that had illegally benefited from the duty-free rule in violation of regulatory guidelines. These devices remain blocked as of now. Conversely, around 47,000 suspended phones were found to be legitimately exempt and have since been reactivated after verification procedures. Egypt introduced the exemption policy as part of a national framework to regulate and monitor mobile device imports, reduce smuggling, and ensure fair taxation.
