China in BIG trouble due to Israel-Iran war; Xi Jinping now depends on Putin for..., good news for Russia due to...

(File) China's support for Iran in the recent Israel-Iran war may prove costly for Beijing as the South Asian power is likely to bear the brunt of a potential oil crisis if the conflict reignites. Beijing issued a harsh condemnation of Israel and the United States, after the two allies bombed Iranian nuclear sites last week. But experts believe that China's support for Iran will likely decrease in the future due its emerging role as a mediator in the Middle East and the damage caused by Tehran's threats to block the Strait of Hormuz. On the other hand, Russia is expected to benefit more from the Israel-Iran war, which is why Moscow largely distanced itself from the conflict, barring a few strong statements, even though Tehran is a major ally. China now more dependent on Russia for energy needs As per media reports, China, which purchases a large chunk of Iran's oil and gas produce, is worried because Tehran will likely blockade the Strait of Hormuz in case of another attack by Israel and/or the US, which will negatively impact Beijing's energy needs. The situation has forced China to once again consider Russia's proposed Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. Citing anonymous sources close to Beijing, the WSJ report said China has begun showing interest in the Power of Siberia 2 project, after Beijing had earlier disagreed with Moscow's proposals regarding the ownership and cost of the proposed pipeline. The report also noted that China does not want to be overly dependent on any single source for its energy needs, and is considering to purchase more oil and gas from other oil-producing countries apart from allies like Iran and Russia. Notably, about a third of China's gas imports come as LNG from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the WSJ report said, citing data from Rystad Energy. Additionally, Russia is China's third-largest LNG supplier after Australia and Qatar, and according to S&P Global, Russia is also China's largest pipeline supplier, via Siberia 1, whose throughput is set to reach 38 billion cubic meters this year.

Indian team in US for fresh talks on trade deal

NEW DELHI: A team of Indian officials is in the US for talks on a bilateral trade deal as two sides seek to narrow gaps. Sources told TOI that the team is led by India's chief negotiator Rajesh Agarwal . Farm sector has emerged as one of the contentious areas with govt not keen to offer tariff concessions in some of the sensitive sectors, such as maize and soybean, where genetically modified items dominate American farms. The latest round of talks, to last over two days, are seen as a fresh attempt to cobble together a deal before the deadline for imposition of reciprocal tariffs, which in India's case was 26%, by July 9. After imposing reciprocal tariffs, US President Donald Trump decided to offer a 90-day suspension. While PM Narendra Modi and Trump had agreed to work on the first tranche of a bilateral trade deal by Fall (Sept-Oct), the reciprocal tariff announcement prompted negotiators to seek an early tranche. Officials have maintained that they are still working on the proposed deal but added that govt is unwilling to settle for a anything that does not take care of India's interests. Donald Trump's tariff wars deal a blow! US economy shrinks 0.5%; worse than estimates

The US economy shrank by 0.5% on an annual basis in the first quarter of 2025, as President Donald Trump's trade war prompted a rush of imports, disrupting businesses, the commerce department announced on Thursday. This unexpected sharp downgrade from an earlier estimate of a 0.2% decline, reflects the economic fallout from Trump's trade policies, which saw American firms scrambling to import goods before tariffs could take effect. The surge in imports, up by a staggering 37.9%, the fastest pace since 2020, dragged down the GDP by almost 4.7 percentage points, AP reported. This contraction marks the first quarterly decline in the US economy in three years, reversing the 2.4% growth recorded in the final three months of 2024. Consumer spending also took a significant hit, slowing to just 0.5% growth, a steep fall from the 4% recorded in the previous quarter and well below earlier government estimates. A key measure of the economy's underlying strength, grew at an annual rate of 1.9% between January and March. That's a noticeable slowdown from the 2.9% pace seen in the final quarter of 2024. How did imports drag down US GDP ? GDP or the Gross Domestic Product includes only what is produced domestically, not what is imported from foreign lands. Hence, the imports that are reflected in the GDP report as consumer spending or business investments, must be subtracted to avoid inflating figures. Economists, however, believe the slump may prove short-lived. The import-driven distortion seen in the first quarter is not expected to repeat in the April-to-June period. Many forecasters anticipate a rebound, with second-quarter GDP growth projected to reach 3%, according to a FactSet survey. The first official estimate of second-quarter GDP is due on 30 July.
