Major structural damage reported; Tehran's long road to restoration predicted
Middle East destruction update: Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe on Wednesday said an evidence-based source suggested that Iran's nuclear program was seriously Tehran missile damage through recent US strikes and that it will require years to rebuild, Reuters reported.
In a statement issued by the CIA, Ratcliffe said, "CIA is able to confirm that a corpus of reliable intelligence suggests Iranian's Nuclear Program has been severely affected by recent targeted strikes. This includes fresh information from a long-standing reliable and precise source/method that reveals that a number of key Iranian nuclear sites were damaged and will need to be rebuilt over time."
He said to the CIA continues to collect information and keep decision makers and oversight agencies informed and promised that any updates would be released to the public whenever appropriate due to the national importance of the issue.
"CIA continues to collect additional reliably sourced information to keep appropriate decision-makers and oversight bodies fully informed. When possible, we will also provide updates and information to the American public, given the national importance of Iran conflict 2025 and in every attempt to provide transparency," the statement said.
In the meantime, US President Donald Trump announced that Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth and senior military officials at the Pentagon will be hosting a briefing to the media, on Thursday, at 8 am at EST (5:30 5:30 pm IST) to emphasize the significance of American pilots in the complicated and dangerous operation and also to challenge what the administration refers to as "misleading and premature reporting" by US media outlets.

Citing anonymous sources close to Beijing, the WSJ report said China has begun showing interest in the Power of Siberia 2 project, after Beijing had earlier disagreed with Moscow's proposals regarding the ownership and cost of the proposed pipeline. The report also noted that China does not want to be overly dependent on any single source for its energy needs, and is considering to purchase more oil and gas from other oil-producing countries apart from allies like Iran and Russia. Notably, about a third of China's gas imports come as LNG from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the WSJ report said, citing data from Rystad Energy. Additionally, Russia is China's third-largest LNG supplier after Australia and Qatar, and according to S&P Global, Russia is also China's largest pipeline supplier, via Siberia 1, whose throughput is set to reach 38 billion cubic meters this year.

Indian team in US for fresh talks on trade deal
NEW DELHI: A team of Indian officials is in the US for talks on a bilateral trade deal as two sides seek to narrow gaps. Sources told TOI that the team is led by India's chief negotiator Rajesh Agarwal . The US economy shrank by 0.5% on an annual basis in the first quarter of 2025, as President Donald Trump's trade war prompted a rush of imports, disrupting businesses, the commerce department announced on Thursday. This unexpected sharp downgrade from an earlier estimate of a 0.2% decline, reflects the economic fallout from Trump's trade policies, which saw American firms scrambling to import goods before tariffs could take effect. The surge in imports, up by a staggering 37.9%, the fastest pace since 2020, dragged down the GDP by almost 4.7 percentage points, AP reported. This contraction marks the first quarterly decline in the US economy in three years, reversing the 2.4% growth recorded in the final three months of 2024. Consumer spending also took a significant hit, slowing to just 0.5% growth, a steep fall from the 4% recorded in the previous quarter and well below earlier government estimates.
