Indian consumer goods major ITC beats profit view as rural demand rebounds

Reuters06-02-2025

Feb 6 (Reuters) - Indian consumer goods major ITC (ITC.NS), opens new tab reported quarterly profit above estimates on Thursday, benefiting from a revival in demand for consumer goods and cigarettes in the country's small towns and villages.
The 'Gold Flake' cigarette maker reported a profit of 56.38 billion rupees ($643.69 million) for the third quarter ended December 31, compared with 55.72 billion rupees a year earlier.
Analysts, on average, had projected a profit of 51.9 billion rupees, according to data compiled by LSEG.
People in rural India have started spending more on branded goods again - benefiting from income support schemes by several states - helping consumer goods majors cushion the blow from a slowdown in urban spending.
For ITC, quarterly revenue rose nearly 9% to 182.9 billion rupees, helped by an expansion in rural and semi-urban areas.
The group's mainstay cigarettes business posted an 8% rise in revenue, while its consumer goods vertical - home to brands including Aashirvad, Sunfeast and Bingo - reported a 4% growth.
Cigarettes and consumer goods account for the majority of ITC's revenue.

India's Vedanta says Trump's tariffs damaging, seeks import curbs

June 4 (Reuters) - Indian metals-to-oil conglomerate Vedanta ( opens new tab said on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump's doubling of aluminium tariffs to 50% poses a threat to the Indian industry already struggling with surging imports. Trump's latest round of tariffs on aluminium and steel, which took effect on Wednesday, have unsettled the global markets. "The 50% tariff announced by Trump is damaging to the Indian aluminium industry, which is already under pressure from surging imports that threaten to create surplus and risk to domestic market access," a Vedanta spokesperson told Reuters. The miner, which is the country's largest aluminium producer, urged the Indian government to implement tariffs to protect against imports. "..There should be duty guard-rails for the aluminium industry as well which has so far invested more than $20 billion to set up the current domestic primary aluminium capacity," the spokesperson said. India's cumulative aluminum exports fell 19% to 2.24 million metric tons in the fiscal year ended March 2025, according to government data. Separately, the country's federal steel minister said earlier this week that the impact of Trump's steel tariffs would be minor on the local industry, as India, the world's second-largest crude steel producer, does not export to the U.S. in significant quantities. In April, India imposed a 12% temporary tariff on some steel imports, locally known as a safeguard duty, to curb a surge in cheap shipments primarily from China.

Mexico to announce 'measures' next week if no deal on US metals tariffs

June 4 (Reuters) - Mexico will announce measures next week if there is no agreement reached with the United States on the steel and aluminum tariffs announced, president Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday. She also called the U.S. announcement to raise the metals' tariffs to 50% from the 25% introduce in March an "unfair measure" during her morning conference, citing the free trade agreement Mexico and Canada share with the United Sates. Sheinbaum however said that Mexico's response would not be "an eye for an eye." "It is not a matter of revenge, or retaliation as they call it in English," she said. "It is a matter of protecting our jobs and our businesses." U.S. President Donald Trump had late on Tuesday signed an executive proclamation activating the tariffs starting Wednesday. The Trump administration also wants countries to provide their "best offers" to avoid other punishing import levies from taking effect in early July, according to a draft letter to negotiating partners seen by Reuters. Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard is set to hold talks with high-level U.S. officials this week, Sheinbaum said.
