When Anju Mahendru asked Dimple Kapadia to leave Rajesh Khanna's birthday party: ‘She pretended to be innocent but…'

The love life of Bollywood's first superstar, Rajesh Khanna , was nothing short of a film script. But one chapter that still grabs attention is his complicated relationship with actress Anju Mahendru and how things turned awkward when Dimple Kapadia entered the picture. A Love That Started with Promise As reported by News 18, Rajesh Khanna met Anju Mahendru in 1966, soon after winning a talent contest. While he rose to fame, Anju supported him, even managing his home 'Aashirvad'. Some say he gifted it to her. But as Rajesh became a superstar, he grew possessive. He reportedly interfered in her career and disliked her focus on work. Though he proposed in 1971, Anju refused, choosing her career instead. This decision created a rift and marked a major turning point in their relationship. When Anju Was Linked to Gary Sobers Around this time, Anju was also said to be getting close to West Indies cricket legend Gary Sobers. The two reportedly met through a mutual friend, and Sobers even proposed to her. Anju accepted his ring, and the news made headlines. This only added more tension to her already-strained relationship with Rajesh. The Dimple Chapter Begins After their breakup, Rajesh Khanna found love again—this time with a rising young actress, Dimple Kapadia. She was just 15 at the time, nearly half his age. Dimple's First Meeting with Anju Anju once shared how things changed between her and Dimple Kapadia after their first meeting. Recalling the moment in an interview with Stardust, she said, 'When Rajesh and I met her for the first time, Dimple addressed us as uncle and aunty and then I suddenly saw a shift in her attitude. She pretended to be innocent, but she would take indirect digs at me.' The tension between them wasn't hidden. Although Dimple was now Rajesh's wife, Anju was still a part of his life in some way—and that created uncomfortable moments. The Party That Turned Sour One of the most talked-about incidents from this love triangle happened during Rajesh Khanna's birthday celebration. Rajesh asked Anju to invite guests for the party, but she deliberately left out the Kapadias. This naturally didn't go down well with Rajesh, who then called Dimple personally to apologise and invited her himself. At the party, Dimple didn't hold back and took a swipe at Anju. As Anju recalled, 'On Rajesh Khanna's birthday party, she sarcastically asked me if she could come in. I also lost my cool and ended up saying,'If you are invited, then sure, if not, please go back.'' Dimple and Khanna married in 1973, right before the release of her debut film, 'Bobby'. Together, they had two daughters, Twinkle and Rinke Khanna . Antony Perumbavoor responds to claims of interfering in Mohanlal's script selection: ‘It's half true, half false'

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has once again demonstrated his command over the box office, with two of his films crossing the Rs 200 crore mark in less than 45 days. After the massive success of L2: Empuraan, which emerged as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and the second highest-grossing Indian film of the year so far by earning Rs 265.5 crore worldwide, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, Mohanlal's Thudarum has also surpassed the Rs 200 crore mark and is continuing its journey at an impressive momentum. Unlike Empuraan, which was mounted on a massive budget of about Rs 175 crore, Thudarum was a significantly smaller film, making its success all the more impactful. At the same time, in contrast to the Prithviraj Sukumaran directorial that opened to average reviews, Thudarum received largely positive responses, thus making its success more notable. Nonetheless, this contrast also brought more focus to Mohanlal's choice of scripts, which had been widely criticised until Thudarum. Given the superstar's string of underwhelming box office performances since Lucifer (2019) — with Neru being the only exception — his fans had been disheartened, and the Tharun Moorthy directorial has now rejuvenated their spirits. In the meantime, rumours were rife that it was not Mohanlal himself, but his associates, who decided which projects he should take on. Now, the superstar's frequent collaborator, producer Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas, has addressed questions about whether he interferes in Mohanlal's script selection. Acknowledging that there is some truth to the claims, Antony, however, clarified that it is only in the case of projects considered for Aashirvad Cinemas that both he and Mohanlal listen to scripts together. For projects from other producers, he maintained, Mohanlal listens to the scripts on his own. 'It's half true and half false that I listen to the stories that come Mohanlal sir's way and participate in his script selections. Yes, we listen together to all the stories being considered for production by Aashirvad. I actively participate in discussions of those projects. On the other hand, it's Lal sir himself, alone, who listens to the stories of films from other producers. I don't participate in such discussions. This is so that, if those films face any setbacks, people don't say it happened because I didn't approve of the projects,' he said during a chat with Mathrubhumi. Antony continued, 'Many people want to do a film with Mohanlal sir, and their wishes are not bluntly turned down. We want to give everybody a chance. But we only have one Mohanlal sir, right? What can we do when so many people come looking for this one person? So, not everyone ends up getting chances to work with him.' Antony Perumbavoor bankrolled Mohanlal's blockbuster films such as Narasimham (2000), Ravanaprabhu (2001), Naran (2005), Rasathanthram (2006), Evidam Swargamanu (2009), Spirit (2012), Drishyam (2013), Oppam (2016), Lucifer and Drishyam 2 (2021). While Mohanlal will be next seen in the Telugu fantasy film Kannappa, wherein he plays a cameo role, the Malayalam superstar is currently working on Sathyan Anthikad's Hridayapoorvam and Mahesh Narayanan's highly ambitious multi-starrer project, tentatively titled MMMN, which marks his on-screen reunion with Malayalam megastar Mammootty after a gap of 16 years since Twenty:20 (2008).

Indian consumer goods major ITC beats profit view as rural demand rebounds

Feb 6 (Reuters) - Indian consumer goods major ITC ( opens new tab reported quarterly profit above estimates on Thursday, benefiting from a revival in demand for consumer goods and cigarettes in the country's small towns and villages. The 'Gold Flake' cigarette maker reported a profit of 56.38 billion rupees ($643.69 million) for the third quarter ended December 31, compared with 55.72 billion rupees a year earlier. Analysts, on average, had projected a profit of 51.9 billion rupees, according to data compiled by LSEG. People in rural India have started spending more on branded goods again - benefiting from income support schemes by several states - helping consumer goods majors cushion the blow from a slowdown in urban spending. For ITC, quarterly revenue rose nearly 9% to 182.9 billion rupees, helped by an expansion in rural and semi-urban areas. The group's mainstay cigarettes business posted an 8% rise in revenue, while its consumer goods vertical - home to brands including Aashirvad, Sunfeast and Bingo - reported a 4% growth. Cigarettes and consumer goods account for the majority of ITC's revenue. ($1 = 87.5890 Indian rupees)
