Antony Perumbavoor responds to claims of interfering in Mohanlal's script selection: ‘It's half true, half false'

Indian Express12-05-2025

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has once again demonstrated his command over the box office, with two of his films crossing the Rs 200 crore mark in less than 45 days. After the massive success of L2: Empuraan, which emerged as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and the second highest-grossing Indian film of the year so far by earning Rs 265.5 crore worldwide, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, Mohanlal's Thudarum has also surpassed the Rs 200 crore mark and is continuing its journey at an impressive momentum.
Unlike Empuraan, which was mounted on a massive budget of about Rs 175 crore, Thudarum was a significantly smaller film, making its success all the more impactful. At the same time, in contrast to the Prithviraj Sukumaran directorial that opened to average reviews, Thudarum received largely positive responses, thus making its success more notable. Nonetheless, this contrast also brought more focus to Mohanlal's choice of scripts, which had been widely criticised until Thudarum. Given the superstar's string of underwhelming box office performances since Lucifer (2019) — with Neru being the only exception — his fans had been disheartened, and the Tharun Moorthy directorial has now rejuvenated their spirits.
In the meantime, rumours were rife that it was not Mohanlal himself, but his associates, who decided which projects he should take on. Now, the superstar's frequent collaborator, producer Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas, has addressed questions about whether he interferes in Mohanlal's script selection. Acknowledging that there is some truth to the claims, Antony, however, clarified that it is only in the case of projects considered for Aashirvad Cinemas that both he and Mohanlal listen to scripts together. For projects from other producers, he maintained, Mohanlal listens to the scripts on his own.
'It's half true and half false that I listen to the stories that come Mohanlal sir's way and participate in his script selections. Yes, we listen together to all the stories being considered for production by Aashirvad. I actively participate in discussions of those projects. On the other hand, it's Lal sir himself, alone, who listens to the stories of films from other producers. I don't participate in such discussions. This is so that, if those films face any setbacks, people don't say it happened because I didn't approve of the projects,' he said during a chat with Mathrubhumi.
Antony continued, 'Many people want to do a film with Mohanlal sir, and their wishes are not bluntly turned down. We want to give everybody a chance. But we only have one Mohanlal sir, right? What can we do when so many people come looking for this one person? So, not everyone ends up getting chances to work with him.'
Antony Perumbavoor bankrolled Mohanlal's blockbuster films such as Narasimham (2000), Ravanaprabhu (2001), Naran (2005), Rasathanthram (2006), Evidam Swargamanu (2009), Spirit (2012), Drishyam (2013), Oppam (2016), Lucifer and Drishyam 2 (2021).
While Mohanlal will be next seen in the Telugu fantasy film Kannappa, wherein he plays a cameo role, the Malayalam superstar is currently working on Sathyan Anthikad's Hridayapoorvam and Mahesh Narayanan's highly ambitious multi-starrer project, tentatively titled MMMN, which marks his on-screen reunion with Malayalam megastar Mammootty after a gap of 16 years since Twenty:20 (2008).

In this collection of pictures we shall know the beautiful love story of Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma. We shall know everything about their first meeting and dating era. Let's dive in. In IPL 2025, Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Punjab Kings and won the title. This was RCB's first IPL title. Many stars were present in the stadium to watch this match. Virat Kohli's wife and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma was also present in the stadium to watch this match. As soon as the match ended, both of them celebrated together. Kohli hugged Anushka and cried. This cute moment was also captured on camera. It has been a long time since both of them got married. Here we are telling you about some special things related to their love story and married life. The first meeting of Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma was very interesting. Both of them met on the set during an ad shoot in the year 2013. Virat Kohli had told in an interview that he was very nervous during his first meeting with Anushka and to overcome his nervousness and talk to Anushka, he cracked a joke. Actually, during the ad shoot, Anushka looked taller than Virat, so the cricketer said, 'Don't you think you are wearing very high heels.' Anushka Sharma got angry after hearing this from Virat Kohli and she said, 'Excuse me.' After such a reaction of Anushka, a strange situation arose. However, later both of them became good friends. In 2014, Virat scored a century in Melbourne. Anushka had also reached to watch this match. After completing his century, Virat gave a flying kiss to Anushka who was present in the stadium. Due to this, fans started speculating that the two are getting closer. Dating speculations also started. After dating for a few years, Anushka and Virat got married in December 2017. To make this wedding royal, Virat-Anushka spent money like water. The resort in which Virushka got married was opened especially for them in December. Otherwise this resort always opens in April. Only 50 special guests were invited for the wedding. The cost of one person staying here for a week is about one crore rupees. According to this, Rs 45-50 crore were spent only on accommodating the guests for Virat and Anushka's wedding. When Anushka Sharma was dating Virat Kohli, she liked one special thing about the cricketer. Anushka said in an event related to Indian Sports Honors in the year 2023, 'Before dating, one thing I liked about Virat was his memory. I thought this thing would be very helpful for me.' It was because of Virat Kohli's good memory that Anushka came close to him. On 11 January 2021, Anushka gave birth to daughter Vamika, while on 15 February 2024, she gave birth to son Akay. These days Anushka is giving full time to raising her children away from films, Virat also spends more time with the family. Anushka reached many matches this season to support Virat and RCB team. Due to this lady luck, Virat's team managed to win the IPL title this season. It was not only Anushka Sharma's life that changed because of Virat. Many changes came in Virat's life because of Anushka Sharma. In an interview given in the year 2020, Virat said, 'When the situation is difficult, you have to leave your ego. You have to stay strong in difficult times, keep struggling continuously, in the end you find a way. I saw Anushka doing this and have learned the same thing from her.' Whenever Virat has won a title, he has given credit to Anushka. Be it the 2024 T20 World Cup or the 2025 Champions Trophy. Even after winning the IPL, Kohli gave credit to Anushka and said that Anushka has been with me in every difficult time. I am grateful to her.

Housefull 5 India Advance Booking Update: Akshay Kumar's comic caper to sell in the vicinity of 40000 tickets in top chains with a day to go

Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 is gearing up for its big release on June 6, 2025. The advance bookings for the comic caper kicked off a few days ago and here is how the bookings are in India's top multiplex chains, PVRInox and Cinepolis. As of 10 PM on June 4, the film has sold 37,000 tickets. By the end of the day, Housefull 5 is expected to hit 40,000 tickets. With just one day left, the makers are hoping for a massive surge to reach at least 100,000 tickets in these chains. The advance bookings for the Akshay Kumar starrer started on June 1. Initially, the target was to sell 125,000 to 150,000 tickets in PVRInox and Cinepolis. However, the pace has been slower than expected. As of now, the film is aiming for a more realistic 100,000 tickets by Thursday night. This would set the stage for a respectable opening day collection of Rs 20 crore net in India. While Rs 20 crore is a not exactly a bad start, a film of Housefull 5's scale, boasting a Rs 225 crore budget, needs a bigger opening to make waves. A Rs 25-30 crore start would be ideal, but you take what you get. Outside the top chains, the booking trend is stronger. Chains like Rajhans, MovieMax, and Miraj are seeing better pre-sales. This suggests that Housefull 5 could see good walk-in numbers on release day, especially in smaller towns. The weekend bookings looks promising. Advance bookings for Saturday (Bakri Eid) and Sunday are picking up strongly. Family audiences are expected to turn up in big numbers, boosting the film's prospects. If the comedy lands well and the murder-mystery intrigue around the dual climaxes clicks, Housefull 5 could see a big jump over the weekend. Financially, Housefull 5 is in a strong position. The film has already recovered nearly 60 percent of its budget, that is around Rs 135 crore, through non-theatrical sources like satellite rights, digital streaming, and music deals. This gives the makers a safety net. To break even, the film needs to gross Rs 275 crore worldwide. To be declared a hit, it must cross Rs 325 crore globally. With a massive release across 5,000 screens in India, the stage is set for a big theatrical run. The unique strategy of releasing two versions with different climaxes should spark discussions after the release. This could possibly also drive repeat viewings, adding to the box office haul. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, Housefull 5 features a star-studded cast that also includes Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, and Jacqueline Fernandez among others. The franchise's brand value and the promise of a laugh riot on a luxury cruise are key draws. With good international pre-sales and a holiday weekend ahead, Housefull 5 is poised for a reasonable global start.
